Needed to learn this. Thank you 👍 very much...
Any comment on loose feeling if you want some swivel opposed to tightened to the top post but no swivel. Could the swivel aspect be a bad idea im entertaining, love to hear some feedback on that
Should we use a throne with back rest?? Also please make a video for knee heath for drummers, as i play single pedal, my right knee hurts quite a lot on a gig and post gig 🙏
And i believe I've done some permanent damage to my knees, one drummer I know who had to replace his knees because of drumming. Please help 🙏
Hmm … another tip might be to raise your tractor throne such that the height of the middle seat and leg opening match the height of your round seat. Just a thought. 😬
My Roc n Soc saved my back. Keep in mind that I’m not a pro drummer anymore, I don’t play double kick and play mostly heal down. I sit much lower than I used to and play at much less volume. I’m an engineer, so everything you say makes sense… I’m just a bit more “comfort” than “performance”, these days. Now, back to finding a backrest for the RnS!
What if the thrown has a back rest?
Where can I get more info about this? I don’t see a “contact” link on your website. Do you have a program for someone who has access to a full gym? How many days a week is this? Do you prescribe sets, reps, weight, and rest? Does this use RPE? Does this include conditioning? Thanks for your time.
Email and I’ll answer everything b.green.drums@gmail.com
Sick groove! I've been working on developing some open handed playing to get some of the work to my weak hand and have more options musically (Simon Phillips is a big inspiration for that one, some of why he sounds so good he credits to left hand leading on a mostly righty setup)
Skechers, loafers are superb !.. Thank me later Brandon, 😁
Wait a minute, you are that guy from squat university. And you're a drummer too? That is a blessing!!
I’ve tried many thrones and the dw 9000 round is my favorite. Firm enough to feel like I’m sitting on top of it and not sinking in, yet still comfortable. For me and the way I play what Brandon explains in the video checks out. I think a key factor for balance on the throne is having enough material underneath to support the thighs but if your tractor throne fulfills that then you’re all good.
Absolutely totally agree 100%. Had a tractor seat drum throne and my balance was complete off. The front part between the legs also prevented me from getting closer to my drums, therefore my feet and legs had to strath farther to kick pedals. Best drum throne is a thick round seat with leg dimples and a back rest for best leg movements center balance.
Funny enough, I have the exact opposite experience. I used a round seat for years, thinking it was a default kind of throne, therefore it must be good. I started experiencing back pain so I experimented with the seat height and throne positioning. Nothing worked. I switched to Ahead Spinal Glide tractor-style drum throne and never looked back. For the past 7 years now, I haven't experienced ANY back pain whatsoever. Keep in mind, I don't play double bass regularly, only from time to time and not for very long, and I play gigs that last for 7 hours on average. I feel much more stable, I'm not trying to balance my body while playing no matter what my feet are doing. To each their own, I guess we're all different with different preferences. When my throne starts falling apart, I'm just going to buy the exact same one.
This videos is too simplistic, narrowed focus and not complimentary for drumming at all. Even when it pretends to be so. I listened to the exact advice this youtuber gave (this is not his first video about this concept) and here's the story and conclusion. It is NOT the shape of the throne that maters, it's how much of your center of gravity can you put with ease in alignment with the throne's spindle. If you're a tall person 15 inch round seat will give you more trouble than a larger (and wider) tractor throne. .I shifted from DW's 9000 Tractor seat which is super wide(19 inch) and stable(but it wobbles at the spindle's base) to the Pearl Roadster Donut shaped and it was a horrible mistake for my spine. The pearl seat is the best piece of hardware I've ever seen quality wise for drums but the donut made the radius in direct contact with my iliac so small it was unstable for my back and had me cramping my back muscles for 2 weeks and laying in bed. It was great for freedom of movement and lifting my leg but killed my back. I had to spend 1 month researching to find the Tama 1st Chair Round rider Xl as the widest option with no wobble and not very soft to even get closer to stability and it's only 15 inch in diameter. There's no 17 inch or 18 inch round seats I could find.. Still, the DW seat keeps your balance much more because it's so wide and here is the key, it supports my hip joint so I do not have to stress to gold my leg up. I cab stay relaxed and still keep heel up no problem, that's the key. It took watching Jojo Mayer explain balance and drum seat setup in his Modern Weapons for the Secret drummer part 2 to figure out something that kind of works. It took me another month to BEGIN to get stable with my core engaged and do the constant release technique in order to be able to play outside of the bass drum and let it ring. So much for this expertise in bio mechanics and he doesn't even get the basic physics of momentum and center of mass right because this video doesn't even talk about the radius difference between the largest round cushion which is 15 inches and tractor seats, 19 inches for DW. You shouldn't have to get your core engaged and tight in order to play a single bass drum note out of the drum head. If you decide to follow his advice (and I did from another video 2 months ago) then make sure to sit up high with your feet as close as possible to your center of mass as you can. If the feet move away from the throne you'll have to spend more force to keep balance and you won't be able to play OUTSIDE of the bass drum, be dammed to BURY the beater into the bass drum or play heel down like Jojo says and 95% drummers do because of that balance issue and never get any other sound out of your bass drum but a numb thud that started in the 70s. Forget about ever playing ANY doubles with your feet on heel up consistently and forget about doing Moeller with your feet to get triplets without having crazy ankle speed. You'll have to bury the beater in order to prevent falling. Or, you can get a tractor drum drum that supports your legs and is wide enough to prevent gravity from pulling you down, even with slits and softer cushioning for the thigs.
You’d get more likes if your response wasn’t so long. I liked your response but admittedly I had to skip ahead.
@@ShawnxEdge I am not an AD HD zoomer/millenial with reading disabilities due to iPhone induced short attention spans. There is no reading culture anymore . I considered what you said while writing my OP and decided I didn't care and I still don't. In order to think on must be able to speak. The summary is in the third paragraph. I'm glad you liked it but if a person cannot read through a thought developing that is their problem and honestly, it is also a handicap.

There are amazing bassists, singers, guitarists, etc….But there is only ONE who sits on The Throne.
People make the same mistake with their bicycle saddle. A cushy saddle feels better than a stiff one momentarily, and maybe is still for gently toodling around a park, but a stiffer saddle is WAY more comfortable and efficient when you are actually riding your bicycle with effort over a meaningful distance. You float around on a cushy saddle once you start pedaling with effort and it stinks.
For all of the folks promoting Rocnsoc, ask yourself: If you accidentally move 1/2 inch in any direction on the seat, why are you now completely destabilized? Have fun constantly trying to put your butt cheeks back into place. It's awful for your spine.
Do you have videos/tips on ergonomics on having multiple ( 3+) standard rack toms and where and how to position roto toms or other non tom drums? Other percussion drums?
About a month ago I stopped thinking about it and switched back to my flat, round throne from one that looks identical to your tractor seat. Basically your video stated my thoughts exactly and, yes, the benefits were immediately apparent. I should add that my flat throne has a soft seating surface. Reminds me of a close cousin to the velour you'd sit on in, say, an '85 SAAB 900 for those who know ;) Anyway, I know in my case the plushy grip adds a whole new dimension of benefit over that other, less breathable stuff.
Let me play devil’s advocate. The tractor seat is setup lower which exacerbates some of those issues. You can setup tractor seat higher than the round seat and sit even closer. Some of the issues you describe would be diminished with the higher closer setup.
I cannot do that exercise at all on my round Yamaha DS-750. This throne is a little bit rounded on the top and it's not very sturdy material. My legs sink into it on the sides. Now since you it's hard to know how sturdy thrones are when you're shopping online, it would be best to go to a drum shop and try out many drum thrones, correct?
I think my core muscles must be as weak as it gets because I can't seem to lift my legs on either throne (tractor or flat) without leaning back. Time to hit the gym!
What about a slightly rounded top rather than flat?
Wish I'd known this before buying my Mapex tractor throne. I've been trying to switch to heel up and struggling hard with it.
Round thrones are horrible.
oh no...bad timing for me. I just ordered a Roc n Soc. I wish I'd seen this about three days ago.
These lessons are super. Equipment position is always something I discuss with my students
Yup. There’s a reason most of my favorite double-bass players use flat thrones.
Couldn’t agree more . Last month before seeing this I set up my 30 year old round seated throne and my balance was immediately better and my middle back felt better . I play a combination of heel down and up . My tractor throne is one of high quality but the design is flawed , for me. Appreciate your content!
Honestly man?... This video kind of sucks. You can just get the same effect by having good control over your core muscles. Do crunches and other ab workouts. Train yourself. Work on center of balance exercises like Tree Pose from Yoga. That stuff is infinitely more useful than pretending like the throne you sit on makes any difference to how you play.
@@ollaitsrealgood I agree with this video 100%. Your seat is a huge deal. I train MMA (I don't compete, so my back injury is not from fighting), and tractor thrones destroyed my back over years of touring with Tech/Djent/Prog bands.
Makes sense, I have both and will experiment to see for myself. I bought my tractor throne a few decades ago and it even has a back rest…but that’s best for rehearsals where I have lots of down time between songs lol.
I miss my roc n Soc (I love the colours) but switching to the flat top has helped my balance so much!
maybe I sit to high? but I sometimes feel during gigs where I have to play on a circular throne that I can't sit far enough back as the throne get's in my way. Something that doesn't happen on my tractor chair at home. but gona see if I get a chance to experiment with this! I've been a verry forward leaning drummer (and it has helped a lot with power) but now I'm trying to better my posture and technique. Swivel helped me a bit with sitting correct as it kinda doesn't work otherwise.
I've just a few weeks ago started playing drums. Balance has been my main challenge and this video has absolutely sorted it for me. Huge thank you!
Would a round Ahead Spinal G throne be comparable to a solid round throne, or is a split throne a bad idea?
Getting a good quality, solid deum throne improved my drumming. I had an old wobbly one for years, and the lack of stability affected how i moved and caused problems. It's literally a game changer.
Sir, you’ve just pointed out an issue I wasn’t aware of in my playing technique. I’ve switched from a DW round seat to an ahead spinal glide. I felt off-balance and my legs felt heavy. I thought it was just because I’m getting older. Thanks a lot!
So is a square seat better than a round seat?
I came here to ask the same question.
Interesting take. Thanks for the info.
Just bought a tractor throne for lower back support
As a man with a unfortunately fat ass I disagree! But live the video cheers will try and find stall for my fat ass 😂
I find this with my tractor style throne. I also find that as I play heel down (hhat) and heel up (kick) that my body is twisted into a hot mess as a result. Or is that in my head?
You are sitting lower on the tractor throne , maybe that’s why the test was harder , just a thought
Absolutely factor to consider as well
Thanks for this Brandon. You upload videos about topics I’m thinking about in that same moment it’s crazy lol. Can I ask what model dw throne that is?
It’s a DW 9000. I’m actually selling a brand new one if you’re interested. Shipping to us US is available 👍
This is exactly true. I recommend using a keyboard bench for drums, it changed my life.
I'm new at drumming. I was using my keyboard bench and just ordered a Roc n Soc because I thought it would be better for my spine. I wish I had seen this comment and video a few days ago. I hope I don't regret this purchase. They aren't exactly cheap. Ugh. Newbie problems.
@kalonakitu If you intend on playing double kick, DON'T use the rocnsoc.
@@kalonakitu I've been playing for 27 years. Roc n soc is the best I've used. You'll really like it.
@johndickinson7260 thank you 👍💜🥁
@@kalonakitu beware this advice. I'm sure John is a great drummer, although your investment is not a reason to injure yourself over time. I've toured A LOT with multiple Tech/Djent/Prog bands, and I'm an in-demand drum instructor in Chicago. Ask yourself why a special "round/motorcycle" style seat is NEVER seen used by a pianist... This is because drum thrones are a scam, with the purpose of selling useless specialized gear. Your back will thank you for using a FLAT and supportive seat that provides the same comfort no matter how much you move. On a RocnSoc, if you move 1/2 inch in any direction, you are now completely destabilized. It's a fact, no amount of opinion is worth your back.
mans uploading a 480 video like its 2008
Lol
All adjustments need to be made with your feet on the pedals. There's also less pressure on your femoral arteries with tractor thrones.
This is the reason I use a tractor throne. The test of pulling your feet back under the seat is not a motion done when drumming, hence irrelevant.
The femoral artery is in the anterior (front) part of the thigh. How do tractor thrones put less pressure on the front of the thigh?
@@ike555je th-cam.com/video/f2K_Q2bFQsI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=9QRxPSpoe1DamF16
@@ike555je The higher joint angle of a traditional throne pinches the artery, especially under high physical activity.
This is exactly why I just shifted away from my Roc N Soc. I sat on it backwards one day with the lip under my thighs and realized the regression I'd been having with quick doubles and double bass just vanished. I had just been thinking "man I guess I really need to focus on practicing my kick again" for a few months, but turns out it was just the extra weight. Thomas Lang did a video explaining this issue at one point too that I stumbled across. Back to a normal throne for me!
