I have been injured again and this time I cannot play through it - like my tennis elbow which I played through ever since March (6 months ago)!

Just wondering how many hours you played per weeks
Hard for me to take an average over a 6 year period (with life events and such) but it could range from 1 - 10 hours per week. I tend to play much more during the summer season as well since NYC has the permit season (free/cheap tennis court time).
hey wishing you a speedy recovery
Thank you so much and me too! 😄
I did the same thing many years ago. Was waiting to return serve, pushed off the split step and then 'bop' - I thought a ball had hit me from behind, and arrrrrrrgh!!! whilst crumpling to the ground. Luckily it at a indoors sports club and there was a first aider who came along quickly and suggested it could be a calf tear. Was on crutches for 2 weeks, then gradually increased the walking/pushing off etc until it eventually recovered, but I do remember being VERY wary about running/sprinting on it during the recovery phase. I think it took 2-3 months in total before I felt 100% confident sprinting again, though during the interim period I could walk fast, run gently etc. I think I had some sports physio massage on it as well which can help with the blood flow/recovery, break up any scar tissue etc. One thing to check are your shoes. Tennis shoes that have a shallow heel / heel drop can put more strain on the calves over time. I stopped using Asics shoes after that and moved to a brand that had more substantial foam/support material in the heel of the shoe. Anyway, good luck with your recovery - you'll be fine - you just need to be patient and be disciplined with any rehab exercises.
Thanks so much and didn't know that about the shoes! Any suggestions on which shoes are good with the foam/other support materials? Also yeah - maybe 2-3 months is more realistic just to be safe.
Calf tears are quick to heal though if that's any consolation. Muscles = lots of blood supply for healing.
Thanks and you are correct in that there is definitely a lot of blood in that area - calf = "2nd heart" as some people call it.
oh man Francis...hope you recover soon. It looked bad to see you on the couch with these bags strapped around the legs. The bright side of it it that now you know to stretch before matches and its a valuable learning in the tennis journey and that the injury, although bad, will subside in a fairly quick time instead of months. I'll be missing your videos till you return but I've my notifications on for when you come back. Hope you come back strong and healthy bro.
Thank you for the very kind words! Will absolutely need to stretch even more now before playing. I'll be missing my videos too of course but as you said - it's part of the journey 🙂. Appreciate it like always!
Get better soon Francis
Thanks so much! Probably need a month at least 😬
Get better Francis
@@madinakudanova2033 thank you and I will!
oh no... I'm so sorry get better
@@binbin1009 Thanks and yes I will 👍
it was such a fine match. shame it had to end soon. wei has a pretty OH backhand. i was trying to learn the positioning and you're good at it. I liked that you play the basics like cross court and higher over the net. Wei was good too, like he sees opportunities to make the other player run but tbh he could've won a few more points if he had rushed the net on multiple occasions instead of returning to the baseline but obviously its better to say when you're not playing.
@@slayer2559 Wei has a great OH backhand - I’m afraid to hit to that side! Definitely agree - takes some courage and commitment to go to the net more often in singles. But you’re correct in that it is tactically important to keep doing that!
Sorry for the shorter than usual video - tough when you have only 30 mins 😬
yeah , it was an easy win for you. I liked the slides that you did in the set. Clay just seems more difficult. I've never played on clay but I can imagine how difficult it can be to regain your composure after a long slide one one end. This was a good play from you. Loved this video
Thanks and glad you enjoyed! For me when it comes to clay, it's always the unpredictable bounces that drive me crazy. Usually knockerz has been the one who outplays me here - one of those rare moments for me 😁
great video as always. I must say Sato has a style which as you mentioned, is very frustrating for his opponents. He has a good serve too. But man was I cringing at the sun. I would have passed out lol. However , I had one thing to ask of you... How do you find friends to play tennis with ? Like in my case, it's pretty difficult to convince one of my few friends to spar with me. Do you just go to the courts and join a group or find people to spar with ?
Thanks so much as always! Although the sun was brutal, Sato handled it better than I - along with a solid game plan. Typically I find people to play via tennis group classes and network that way. Have not tried any tennis networking apps yet.
@@francisplaystennis thanks for this. I'll try this way to find consistent playing partners
Oof, that was a REALLY sunny day ☀
when i first saw mohammad's serve, i was like , yeah he's not winning today it but boy did he change my opinion about him. The way he got his fourth game was lovely. And I really liked the long ralley you guys had in, i guess, mohammed's 5th game. He did have some good placements in the match. And Francis , your serve is a bullet man. Loved this video as always. However , i must say that you're quite the mover yourself. You made Mohammed sweat for his points , thats for sure. Keep it coming Francis.
Mohammed definitely had great consistency and placement - which made for a tough match! Thanks as always and glad you enjoyed 😀
👏👌
Thank you! 😊
oh another thing, Knockerz has a really good serve for a non pro. Like it looks like a pro and has some power. good opponent to face when he's serving
Oof yes, he gives me such a tough time with his flat serve ...
haha i liked how you played doubles and they were mixed doubles. But honestly, you have power in your shots. You can generate more power I feel. Like if you prepare your racquet at the level of your shoulder and a little higher up( not a medvedev level of high prep) and then swing, you can blast more. I've seen a few Patrick Mouratoglou yt videos and he said to hit the ball as soon as it drops and jumps and not wait for the ball to start dipping its trajectory , which can help in more powerful shots. And it actually helps me to get a bit more power on the forehand. Maybe try this and you'll be more lethal. Overall, I liked the video. doubles once in a while is refreshing ngl.
Ah yes I wish that for the forehand I could *consistently lift above shoulder height but it's too much stress on my baby body 😅. I opted for a forehand maybe closer (relatively) to Rune where he doesn't lift above shoulder height. Something to try still though and maybe I can get used to it. I think I have a very similar problem with my backhand as well where I do not loop/eft above shoulder height enough. Really like the advice and thank you as always 🙂
@@francisplaystennis well at the end we play for joy and do whats more comfortable. So its fine. See, I'm a total beginner and dont execute a lot of things when it comes to doing it. But I like having these short conversation on how to get a bit better. Like I wish I could do the double handed backhand. My arms just dont listen to each other. And I've seen an old video of yours where you had a one handed backhand and you know the limitations. So kinda meh on the backhand part.
@@slayer2559 Yeah I totally enjoy it as well - talking about the technique and whatnot. For me to convert to THBH took a ton of ball machine practice just to engrain it. The OHBH though is really graceful when done right 🤩
👌👌👌
this is a gem. Dude, you're literally a genre of positivity. I feel good watching these sets
Thanks so much! That was a super close set. Didn't feel too positive at the time lol 😄
awesome one. I really like these kinds of matches. Do you play tennis every alternate day ?
Thanks so much as always! At the moment it is about 4 times per week approximately - not necessarily alternating. Might be much less during the autumn/winter season as court availabilty + cost becomes more difficult. Will try my best to upload regularly though!
@@francisplaystennis hey thanks man. I like your videos. I get anxious all throughout the day for various reasons, and these recreational tennis videos calms me down a bit. You're a positive guy. Take care of your health as well so that you can upload more. Btw , Jin is really the wall
@@slayer2559 Hey I hear ya - plenty of things to be stressed out about. Well glad that at least I’m making a little difference for someone! Jin is an absolute wall …
Always wondered how that overhead video is made when you walk to the court. It is like a sefi stick but i don't see the stick anywhere. How is that made?
You are correct in that it is a selfie stick - but there is a 360 camera attached to it. In post, the selfie stick gets edited out automatically with the software - Insta360 X3 is the camera I use.
Your shots were strong that night!
Sometimes it is and other it isn't 😬
this video was incredibly short. But i liked it nonetheless. Upload some long format videos pls
@@slayer2559 definitely got some more on the way and thank you 🙏
Natural gut is such a good string but so expensive 💸
Surprisingly it is cheaper for me in that it is lasting longer. The multi-filament I was hitting with broke only after 2 sessions each time ... With the natural gut, it is still not broken after a week which is nice.
@@francisplaystennis That is nice
Sorry for the incredibly short set ... that's the time crunch for you in NYC sometimes
No need to apologize great match Francis!
@@Macheeeeto Thanks as always! Ugh sometimes the limited time can be annoying - no 5 setters for sure lol.
i dont know why but i am genuinely enjoying these videos. when two non pros play, it just feels more close to home and relatable.
Thanks and really appreciate it! I enjoy watching both pro/casual play. Lots to learn from either side of the spectrum.
Is this court surface typical in New York? You'd think it should be a hard court as US Open etc.
@@bojack3827 from what I can tell, NYC’s typical surface is either clay or hardcourt - pretty much 50-50.

Hey there! Krejcikova practiced with Jasmine Paolini - I am not sure who won the practice set but it looked like Krejcikova was winning when I arrived.
MAY I ASK YOU HOW YOU SAW KREJCIKOVA PLEASE? DID YOU SEE HER WELL?
During fan week, you can simply walk-in to any of the courts and find a seat. Usually very close seats which is nice.

Loving these matches, results a bit of a shame but you’ll beat him on a clay someday. Just wondering do you or have you used lead tape on your racquets? I’m considering it at the moment because my racquet is only 270g and I struggle with power, would love to know if you’ve ever used it.
Really happy that you enjoy the videos! Yes, one of these days I'll get him on clay 😁 I tried using lead tape earlier this year - my backhand felt much more stable but my forehand was sluggish as I lacked the arm strength (tennis elbow related). I'd say it is worth a try - try the smaller strips (from tecnifibre for example) before getting a reel.
@@francisplaystennis thanks for the advice ☺️
Great video! Do you have a tourney or any league matches coming up 🔥
@@Macheeeeto Really appreciate it and nothing lined up yet. Might consider it for the fall or winter season. What always holds me back is the scheduling where start times are 9pm or later on weekdays. Brutal when you have work the next day 😬. But it would be cool to play some league matches again!

@@julianzhu0099 I tend to do that 😄 I used to have a score keeper on my racket (Pure Aero 98) but now I can’t use it because I use a Yonex Vcore 100 which does not have the right shape to stick that score keeper.
