How to Support Children Who Age Out (feat. Nicole Davis, Operation Achieve Independence)
For most children, their 18th birthday is significant and may even mark some newfound independence all while still under the protection and care of your parents. However, for children in foster care, this birthday is huge because you are now able to make a decision for yourself of what your future care looks like and it also marks the date you age out of foster care.
For these children, they may not be aware of how to navigate the adult world or what comes next for them. It can end up that a fresh 18-year-old child has to make life decisions we would say are better suited for a 23-year-old to make. It’s a daunting situation that many children are not prepared to face alone.
Nicole Davis is the executive director of Operation Achieve Independence (OAI). OAI focuses on supporting youth aging out of foster care by providing mentoring, life skills training, education, and career preparation.
In this episode, Nicole shares the importance education has in breaking generational trauma, some of the challenges youth who have aged out face, how we can best support children who are about to age out, and much more.

What a team! Great conversation! 👏
Thank you. I just happened on this, providential, I am sure. But this gave me such persepctive on a child I recently worked with, and...perspective on myself having known children who have experienced trauma in relationships. It is such a tricky mix of things to sort out, trying to figure out what the child needs and has been through, and how we can respond.
We're so glad you were encouraged by this episode and that it provided perspective on your work!
I love Riverside Project I can't wait to join your podcast one day soon
They said Judge Susan Brown is a Ku Klux Klans member. Her husband Malcolm Brown cheats on her a lot. We heard she uses Ku Klux Klan Judge David Hittner to steal from innocent black people. You wanted to bully JUDGE BRITTANYE MORRIS, and give her the biggest case load in Harris County. Judge Susan Brown, just know whatever you did to JUDGE BRITTANYE MORRIS, I will do to you 100 times worse. Tell your sneaky link Dan Hinde I said hello. I heard you like to swallow. 😩
Great conversation!
Great episode! 👏
Travis is the best!!❤

Many thanks for making this video on trauma. How do people suffering from trauma know what’s best for them? I’m impressed, I liked this video and you've got yourself a new subscriber!
Great project Judge Brown!
Great conversation
Dr. Jackson is an amazing person whose passion for children and the work she does exudes from every pore. Great interview!
Dr. Jackson is such a dynamic person. Her love and dedication for families is genuine and her heart is in the right place. She is a gem to the target population and a pleasure to know.
Doc, you’re services makes a difference. I’m proud to call you my sister. Keep being that beacon of hope.
Powerful information Dr. Jackson! Thank you for the work that you are doing to help children who have been systematically traumatized in Foster Care and reuniting them with their family members.
😏 *Promo sm*
Thank you both for all you do to support and protect vulnerable children and families! I really enjoyed this episode!
Thank you both for explaining so succinctly about the impact of trauma on the client but those who are there to help. TBRI is a must-have training for anyone working in the community who want to do the best job they possibly can do. A lot of good information was shared and it is greatly appreciated!
TBRI is so important for people to understand! These children that have been hurt over and over again aren't "bad" kids, they have learned to survive, by any means necessary. If you're a foster parent, the behaviors you might (will) see aren't directed at you, so don't it personally. Build the relationship, but remember that building relationships takes time. You didn't build the relationship with your spouse or best friend overnight, and you won't do that for the child in your home that has been hurt.
Great podcast! Thanks for the great content
Wonderful interview and conversation. Thanks for hosting and sharing! We, at Family Roots for Life, Inc., are here to engage and support efforts to improve our child welfare system.
