Commuting like it's 1985! NV4500 Chevrolet Suburban Squarebody drive to work in 2024
Life is too short to take the boring car to work!
Decided to take my 1985 Chevrolet K20 Suburban to work today. Come take a drive with me to see how it goes daily driving a 40 year old beast with modern roads, speed limits and distracted drivers. The Suburban has a 355 SBC V8, Edelbrock 1406 Carb, Performer RPM Intake, Long Tube Headers and NV4500, otherwise it is pretty original. No lift and tires are same OD as original equipment
Was originally a K20 (2500) 6.2 Diesel truck, has dual shocks, 40 gallon tank, 4.10s and a G80.
I am going to be making a lot more videos with this and the other vehicles in my fleet, if you want to see anything specific please do not hesitate to reach out!
00:00 - Cold Start and Walk Around
01:20 - Interior and Driving on Choke
03:14 - Town Driving and Discussion
11:14 - Higher Speeds - Freeway
15:04 - Acceleration; it's how you merge
15:22 - 80 MPH + NV4500 = Smooth Sailing
18:33 - I hate Rock Chips...Secondary Time
19:16 - Warm Idle Cool Down - Final Walk Around

5 Speed Manual 4wd Suburban! Is a NV4500 squarebody worth it?!
มุมมอง 865หลายเดือนก่อน
Whoops...I did it again! Bought another toy! 1985 Chevrolet K20 Suburban, has a 350 and NV4500. Originally had a 6.2 diesel and automatic transmission. I've always loved the squarebody and wanted one for years...I thought prices and conditions just got away from me. Needless to say, when I saw one for sale in my price range I had to have it. If you need any mechanical work done in Boise area, p...

@@Freedmevr45 I knew I didn't have it right 🤣
I’m a total trans am freak!!!!!! Thank you Smokey and the bandit
@@robertcervantes1940 they have always been my favorite muscle car also!
Big deal
@@BobbyPrice-ji1mk got your attention and comment didn't it? 👌
Can Chevrolet bring them back from Angela m
@@Angela-g7c6r I'd buy one! Unfortunately the emissions and safety regulations have put a nail in the small SUV coffin. They still make a very similar Suzuki Jimmy in every other country in the world
That's right brother. I have the C20 3/4 ton
@@TheRealZJM377 there's nothing like a squarebody...they have been loved since new for good reason
David Freiburger would be proud 👏 😊
Does the interior have the 80s smell? You probably know what I'm talking about lol
@@JohnDrivesAnything oh absolutely! It has the huge seat cushions, thin rim steering wheel and that distinct odor of...idk what but all 80s domestic cars smell the same!
Old technology is fun sometimes!
@@JohnDrivesAnything the sound, easy tuning and instant throttle response is great. The cold starts, altitude adjustments, powerband, fuel economy, reliability....all are a lot better with FI 🤣 I never liked carbs even when they were a lot more popular!
I know this feeling well
Suburbans are just a short height Van. Spend the extra money, will yah?
@@richardpickell8062 ehhh vans don't have solid axles, transfer cases or NV4500s....and if they do I'll buy them too 🤣
@tommyistommy build one! You seem to know all the needed components. 😁
Stik shift Suburban ❤
Is that a half ton suburban?
@carsonbrown5366 3/4 ton actually, K20 originally a 6.2 diesel now has 355 SBC and NV4500
That’s awesome man! I wish they still made 2500 suburbans. Nothing has power anymore like it used to
@carsonbrown5366 yeah it's a shame...especially now that the suburban has fully independent suspension. The suspension, brakes and transmissions are really lacking for heavy duty use on modern SUVs. 2500 Suburbans and Excursions are like American Land Cruisers in terms of pricing these days. I'd have to replace my 2000 with a 3/4 ton truck PLUS a suburban!
I know right? It’s sad now that every suv is a mall crawler now! Since HD Suburbans are off the charts, Ford could maybe at least bring back the Excursion. They could make some serious money bringing it back.
Yea my square body has failed me. Im just gonna buy a new car now since they are more reliable
I love my squarebody but my daily is a 2000 suburban 2500, LQ4 and 4l80e are pretty bulletproof. I rent 30 cars a year and have a 2025 company car, new vehicles aren't exactly any more reliable lol
Got the same one, although mines an auto trans. Mad jealous of the stick
This was a 6.2 diesel automatic until 5 years ago. Now has 355, SBC and NV4500...the automatic doesn't have any major issues besides lack of overdrive until 87+ I believe. If you collect the parts to swap now, I promise you NV4500s aren't getting any cheaper as manuals become more and more extinct!
Just don't forget to stop by the bank for a small loan to pay for gas.😮
Hey now this has a 40 gallon tank, I can make it at least 280 miles before bankruptcy 😂😂😂
you could do that with a normal pick up
Well yeah of course lmao a suburban, especially a squarebody, is just a crew cab shortbed pickup with 9 seats lmao
So are the bedbugs!
I'm sitting here crying watching this video I had two 1990 Chevy suburbans in my twenties now I'm 34 I've been without one for like 5 years now and it just hurts so bad but I keep buying these other vehicles trying to replace my heart with the square body and it's not working I really need to get another square body I miss those trucks so much but I think my next one is going to be like a 79 model even though they're so hard to find
There really is nothing like an old suburban, I have a 2000 2500 and now this 85 K20. My folks always had them growing up and the squarebody just always feels special. You'll find another one! Look up in the Pacific Northwest, it's the last place with rust free affordable 4wd examples
Can’t park in the lines
@@RiteSideup-nh6kn where exactly am I out of the lines? Lmao these parking comments are killing me 😂
Why do you put this crap on the Internet?
@@stevechaney2958 It's a free country, feel free to watch some other videos if you don't like mine 🇺🇲😂 I promise I didn't put it up just to piss you off
Hell yeah i shoved a kayak in mine
That no that no that chair is cooler than the suburban
i daily one
@@Brokebanger Life is too short to daily anything "normal"
Its cool that you found that suburban at the thrift store to put your couch in.
Looks and sounds like your your clutch isn't releasing all the way
Thank you for watching! I haven't noticed any clutch issues, I changed the slave, flywheel and clutch when swapping the engine. I am shifting pretty slowly to break everything in. I took it on a 400 mile trip home from Boise, changed fluids and have only put around 200 miles on it driving around town since. There's no clutch slippage or smell, it does have a U-Joint going bad which I can hear and will be changing asap. Perhaps that's what you were hearing also when shifting?
@tommyistommy it just looks like it's slow to go into gear and it sounds like it goes into gear right when the engine is at the rpm of the next gear
The NV4500 is not exactly a transmission that likes to be rushed in my experience. You can shift it faster than I am here...actually I did go a lot faster in this video here th-cam.com/users/shortsEIrxiqMj7Ko?si=qAaOM8yDH4uTBtYL It does have a dual mass flywheel also which doesn't speed things up either. I'll check the clutch over again when I get it up on a lift for a future video, never hurts to check!
@@tommyistommy I know it's a heavy duty trans that's shifts slow it but an easy check is at a complete stop clutch in put it in 1st gear put it back to neutral with the clutch still pushed and try to go back to 1st there should be no resistance because the gear train is already stopped
I want one of these so fricknnnn bad!!!! And I got the 5 kids to go in it!!
They are really the best family mobile in my opinion, there's nothing you can't do with one!
Wait until you discover trucks! You can tow things too 🫣
That's no fun, it's too easy 😂 Both my suburbans are 2500s, I definitely like towing things with these haha
Soooooo, no Suburban no junk? Check!
Lmao save it for me!
I drive it
Bro im pretty sure i know where you live ive definitely seen this gorgeous beast parked
It's hard to hide with something this unique 😂
Get more stuff home in a mini van…. Trust me.
Oh yeah vans are the way to go for cargo room. The load floor is just so much lower!
I feel like that with my OL 7.3L diesel. Lol
@@DomVito87 something about this era of truck just feels right!
Nice truck..nice new tires!
Thank you! These are off my other 2000 2500 suburban...I got new Hummer EV take off wheels for that, so naturally I had to buy another 8 lug GM to put the old ones on!
@tommyistommy naturally
That couch is super cool
Now don't forget to go get some gas while you're out
Hey now it has a 40 gallon tank, it's good enough for at least 1/2 the day 🤣
Hell yeah. It's even a stick shift.
What year is that suburban my parents had a 1985chevy suburban
@@bradleyboyce4347 this is a 1985 actually! My parents had a few squarebodies growing up, love these old things
IS THAT A DIELS
@@ruggeddude1560 good eye, originally it was! 6.2 auto originally. Now has np208, 355 SBC and NV4500. Original G80 4.10 truck, still has the 40 gallon tank and suspension from diesel days also.
I can relate, I have an 84 k20 suburban silverado with the nv4500 too. Love that thing man
@@THE7EPIC7PUPPY awesome!!! You don't see a lot of NV4500 suburbans. It's such a good combo to have overdrive and 5 gears in a squarebody
@@tommyistommy what year is it a suburban with a manual is rare
Same here I love it
To avoid grinding when going into reverse I put it in fifth then reverse
@@flipeecupsstuff7632 interesting...my f150 was like that, for this trans it seems to prefer when I start over from 1/2 shift gate into reverse. All manuals have their little quirks, especially in older vehicles
I can't wait to get mine. Did you buy the 94 model or newer?
@@nickmonteleone1410 this transmission is from a 2006 GMC, the 95+ models are all pretty much the same. The 01-07 GMs have a longer shifter and a better angle for a squarebody, it's simply a different shifter plate. The 93-94 NV4500s with a steeper first gear are wild to me, this first is already low enough. You don't need to give it gas and it's maxed out at 20mph, in high!
Just got a 90 with a 350 hoping to rebuild it and get it in the road soon
That's going to be a great truck! The 88-91s have the best looking front end and interior in my opinion. TBI is also nice, you can just turn the key and go unlike a carb.
Love the park job.
That's what happens when I don't back in... I'm incapable of pulling into a parking spot 🤣
@tommyistommy I get you. I drive a 2500hd and only ever back in.
No you got an amazing vehicle
Sexy ass square body surburban
I'm the same way with my moms wrangler, I'm so happy when I go to work and come home almost makes an eight hour shift hard, yet easier because I get to drive home after.
Grow up
There's just something about the '80s Chevy truck dashes that makes me happy. Probably just because I spent so much time riding around in my with my dad in the tow trucks that he drove when I was young. It's crazy the stuff that we towed with a small block Chevy 355.
That's what this has, the SBC definitely doesn't make the power of a LS but the low end torque even at "smaller" displacements like a 350/355 is pretty impressive. I also grew up in a squarebody...it always just brings back a lot of memories just sitting in one. It's an iconic design, ran for almost 20 years unchanged
Didn't have to flex with the stick on us 😂
The NV4500 is definitely a flex these days...it's sad how rare a manual is any more
@tommyistommy extremely
