The project was started during the regime of INC chief minister Oommen Chandy who overcame multiple hurdles to get it going. When the tender was floated, Adani was the lone bidder and Chandy Sir gave the go ahead despite the risk of approving the bid of a lone bidder being legally challenged. Next step, he got the port included in the Centre's viability gap funding (VGF) and got approval. Until then, no port had secured VGF. Vizhinjam was the first port project to get VGF and it was a breakthrough initiative by the late Congress CM. Vizhinjam is located in Thiruvananthapuram city, the capital of Kerala. It is not located in some isolated coastal area. Vizhinjam is located just 1 km away from Kovalam, which is a world-famous beach resort with multiple five-star and four-star hotel properties. Vizhinjam is a ward (No. 62) of Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation. Vizhinjam is Kerala's gift to the nation. Even though a small state, Kerala has a 600 km-long coastline, which itself is a contribution to nation building. Remember, all 10 Hindi-speaking states in India are landlocked. In general, landlocked countries are among the world's poorest. We have examples in our neighborhood since both Nepal and Bhutan are poor landlocked countries and are dependent on India's Kolkata port for exports and imports. The world is filled with countries which once had coastline, but later lost it due to war or creation of breakaway republics. Examples are Bolivia (coastline lost to Chile after war) and Ethiopia (coastline lost to Eritrea after it broke away). These countries would do anything to get their coastlines back. Kerala is contributing to nation-building simply by its existence, due to its 600 km-long coastline. The deep water port at Vizhinjam is the icing on the cake.

This Kerala port is at extreme south and at least two similar ports are required on east and west coast. A proposed one on Gujarat Maharashtra border will do for the west coast but another one is required on east coast preferably. Linked to a dedicated transport corridor.
