How to Know if Your Fig Trees are Ready for Winter
I have a fig bush in the Netherlands in my garden. A cutting from my parental home I planted 10 years ago. This is the 5th year I had decent figs on it but usually the fruit appear throughout the year, many stay on during winter and then ripen the next year. This was the first year not only the 'overwintering' figs ripened but also some of the new ones. There are several dozen small figs still in there but now approaching the end of the year I do not expect them to ripen any further. Here is hoping enough survive the winter colds (we always have a few weeks of frost here) to ripen in early summer next year.
Excellent fig reviews. I really want Sweet Joy to be better, it’s been on my list of varieties I’m considering for a while, but reviews seem to be mixed. I’d like to add some figs that aren’t just ‘berry’, but not much room so trying to be selective. Thanks for sharing.
in palestine we have 22 varieities of figs
It's a wonder it had any sap as ripe as it was. Are you rooting any cuttings now? I am i bought a deal of some cuttings that were offered on a quick sale. I had some semi-hardwood cuttings from two trees i took too root also. I have some under higher humidity inside the house that are doing great.
Your plan with the wood chips looks like a winner, can’t wait for the Spring reveal. Can’t believe how your greenhouse trees just won’t stop! Awesome fig season this year, thanks for sharing.
Got a Turca from you this year, looking forward to fruit next season. They all look so good, following along as you continue to evaluate. hope you get that raccoon problem sorted out, nothing more disappointing than waiting for a fig and the critters get it first. Thanks for sharing.
I too think the wood chips will do well. Really looks good and different with the leaves trimmed. You have such a good collection of figs. That White Adriatic looked like a flower trying to bloom. Good stuff, thanks for sharing Troy.
Some good looking figs! 👍
😋😋
Somehow, it is sad to see those beautiful trees without leaves, but in no time, they will be right back next year. I saw someone in South America boiling green figs and making a jam out of them, just in case you want to try.
Oh yes, you should try this green fig jam. It looks like candied figs. I hope you will share a video if you make it.
Curious why you have less chips around the base of the tree…?
If the chips are too close They will keep the bases of trunks moist for long periods of time Increasing the potential for them to start to rot or decompose Eventually killing part of the tree or the entire tree
I’m trying a similar strategy this winter with the wood chips and bending of the branches.
I expect them to do well in the woods chips. They look good with the big trim. 👍
I make small individual greenhouses for each fig tree. Is there a benefit to double layering greenhouse plastic? As in 2 sheets of 4-mil. Instead of one layer of 6 mil?
Love your vids dude I have 35+ varieties of figs up to 3 years old and 5 greenhouses with plans for a 6th. I have citrus, bananas and 5 kinds of cold hardy pomegranates. Pineapple guavas too. And a Lila avocado in zone 8 NW Cali at 3600 ft elevation.
Sounds like a great collection! i would have that too if i was in zone 8..i would love your weather ..it really i just like to eat fruit...lol. so it would mean more fruit to eat..... thanks for stopping by
Ya that joint def work
yep thanks for watching
Hi Troy, hope all is well - Good stuff as always. I couldn't make out the variety at the 5:16 mark (between the LSU Tiger and the Creme Di Mora). Thanks!
Alcara is at the 5:16 mark its from nikky... seems to be a dark skin honey fig
Nice figs. Have a couple Mt Etna types, first year so not much to compare, but glad to have them for their reliability. Thanks for sharing.
if you have the weather for it and can let them hang they just get better and better the riper they are... i think everyone should have one ... thanks for stopping by
In my opinion Mt. Etnas/ Chicago Hardy’s aren’t even worth growing. Judged on pure taste, I would rather have a Brown Turkey.
some people like them some dont that why i like to have so many to pick from when growing for a farmers market... alot people seem to prefer honey figs to berry figs at my market... . thanks for stopping by
another one good video
Thanks for watching!
How cold did it get and for how long to cause that damage? I'm also in illinois close to st louis and I haven't had any trees drop leaves yet.
so we had 2 nights with 33 degrees then a night that was 29 all 3 in a roll in mid oct... then one other night a couple weeks late in the 30s... the damage came on the 29 degree night was a heavy frost.. in also up around 850 ft elevation which is much but every thing around us is 300 ft elevation just 5 mile north and 20 miles south so we are up on a big hill but in a frost pocket on that hill my mother lives just 2 mile south of me on the same road and her outside trees are just fine and full of leaves...but now they are up close to the south facing side of her house
Thanks for letting me know. Very interested in your videos being in zone 7a ! Great content and a very cool set up.
thank you glad you like it
When you add your wood mulch, are you going to try to keep out moisture with plastic or just mulch?
for some reason this thing isnt showing my comment.. or at least that what i keep seeing.. like i havent commented but i have twice before this one so maybe one day they will show up
Warm regards to you I would like to add some simple notes that outdoor trees need a different method of organization, such as cow fertilization, controlling weed parasites, as well as spraying an organic pesticide, organizing temporary irrigation, and you will see excellent results even with the arrival of cold weather. Thank you Troy
thank you for your input we are planning several up grades.. thanks for stopping by and commenting
Wow the sky at 0:10 seconds! Good tour, hopefully the figs all pull through OK
thanks for stopping by.. we can have some beautiful fall skies and sun sets here
nice
Appreciate it!
Awesome to get nearly 100% harvest of your figs this year. Zaffiro never quits, love that fig. Mostly I’m surprised how De la Senyora Hivernenca did not take that cold snap. Thanks for sharing.
it been unbelievable to get all these figs with such a long season..ands all my inside trees are totally harden off all the way up which was the case last year freeze came 0ct 30.. had a 21 and 25 degree nites.. so at this piont we got 3 more good weeks for sure.. i was very disappointed in the de la senyora .. thats a big strike... if it dont come back next year i will put something else in its spot.. thanks for stopping by
Those fig trees are fighting the cold weather. Look at them trying to sprout back.
oh yea 2 weeks later they come right back it just has not been cold outside of 3 nites.... but it not uncommon to wear short sleeve shirt on thanksgiving... or go slide riding in the snow...... but usually at least sweatshirt weather....
What's the size of your GH #2?
30 FT X 100 FT trees are on 8 FT centers with 7 FT rolls... holds 44 trees
@@troypriddyFNF thank you!!
I can't believe you are still picking such big figs, and they look fantastic. Those Cavalier and Constantine D'A gigs are huge, and they also look great.
that CDA is my favorite honey fig... its a meal by itself 100 plus gram figs everytime
Good to see how these figs are behaving. Thanks for sharing.
it really interesting how they chance thought the season...
Love these types of videos!

@troypriddyFNF yes I did
Looking good
Thanks 👍
If it is an LSU Jack Willy, have to be good!!! (It is such a beautiful yellow fig) It almost got my name, I was called Willy by my fellow workers when I was in the States.
im really like all my LSU figs... to me there unrated
some varieties have sugar dripping from the eye so that is not an indicator of spoilage unless the water that is coming out is runny and rancid the fig is good
this is not a fig that usually has honey in the eye .. and here its was SWD. and was water eyed. in just a few figs over a period of about 10 days then it didnt happen anymore... this fig really likes cool temps to ripen its best self
@@troypriddyFNF I just lost most my fig varieties from a fungus and just now getting some back growing rapidly I think I have the brown Turkey and the Morocco one with the triangle leaves and a Spanish one
Seems like the LSU figs don’t get enough love. They look great. Thanks for sharing.
im kind of starting to think that as well....stay tune cause i have 16 from Lsu and we will see what they are in time
Hey Troy I’ve heard that I need to get on your list for cuttings. How do I do that? Also I wanted to say thank you for telling us about some varieties are the same. I see a lot of see a lot of sellers won’t tell you. But even so, I have enough room to grow them all. If I know which varieties are the same, I like to plant them near each other. I enjoy your advice and videos 😊
email me at fignfruit@yahoo.com to get on our mailing list.... it us to drive me crazy years ago when i started no one really knew what was the same and was wasnt so i like to put that out there.. help save people time and money....thanks for stopping by
Too blessed to be stressed🦾🦾🦾🫡💯
thanks form stopping by
Instead of a "greenhouse",what you are describing is called a "high tunnel." Basically closed end vs. open ends, and then one can finish the ends like you are describing building your doors. Nice doors. Very functional.
thanks for stopping by
Interesting variety. I'm not sure it would be a good variety for me with some of it's complications. It is pretty though.
its a hit or miss and if your not in a greenhouse could be more miss then hit... just trying to saving people time and money with seeing how it is for me...if your in a desert should be great.. if your in the south .. not so much... thanks for stopping by
I’m in the south
But when it’s good, it’s really good, and in cooler weather conditions. Haven’t really had a good fig since the nights got cool here. Thanks for sharing.
you really got to let them hang tell they start to wrinkle to be good now with cool weather...and that takes a good 14 days in a greenhouse....thanks for stopping by
The long hang time is really hard to overlook. It wasn't special in my humid climate. Sure, it may taste great, but what's the point if I can't many good ones. Any time the rain hits the skin, I can't help think why don't I have another tree in its place. Now you did say that it tastes great even underripe and ripens well in cooler weather. That’s a huge plus, but the problems with the eye, moisture, and hang time put it too far over the edge when you consider how spoiled we are with varieties much more suited to humid climates.
the long hang time is the killer out side ...it a good 2 weeks in the greenhouse in ground which isnt idea... and honestly it no where near as productive as any of my top greenhouse figs like 60 percent less.. then it can also get SWD which is the only fig in ground that gets it.... another strike for sure.... but it also is a younger tree and hasnt been in the ground but a year.. my hope was it would get better at year 3 and year 4 in the greenhouse .. it has a great 2 week shelf life in cool storage so that why i had hoped it would make a greenhouse farmer market fig.. if next season isnt better. then ill replace it for something else to try out ....my goal here is to find the best farmers market fig in a greenhouse for this 7a climate ... then others that want to put up a greenhouse to grow and sell fresh figs will know what not to grow and know what to grow ...as well as the fig leaf tea . and show what you can do with ones that dont get sold... kind of a total business built around Figs...and i have some other ideas to go with it all to boot...
It looks really good!! Does the cold isn’t damaging them?. Isn't it call BLACK MANZANITA instead of MANZANTINA? I look it up on Google and the only one that comes up is the Black Manzanita. Manzanita is the name or description for a small apple in Spanish. BTW, Last night I was eating some of your dry figs, they are Fantastic!! Your fig leaf tea is also great.
thank you my friend i misspelled that... we have been in a indian summer here had 3 nights of cold 2 weeks ago it completely ended the outside orchard but 29F wasnt cold enough to hurt the unheated greenhouse trees.. so we are still picking 5-10 pounds every other day... ripening time are a little longer but still getting figs and there still great with temperatures 40-50 lows and 60-70 highs .. and just the ends open and sides closed in the greenhouse... im glad to hear your enjoying the dry figs and fig leaf tea ....
one of the best channels on TH-cam about growing figs
It is for sure!!
Agreed. It's one of a few I can actually watch.
Thank you so much for the kind words, we appreciate you watching!
thank you my friend
that put a smile on my face.. thank you
What are you using for screen? Where are you getting it from? I will be putting up a couple of high tunnels at the end of November. The sides will have auto up and down on a thermostat. They are going to have ridge vents on the top also controlled by thermostat. I forgot about adding a single door at the end that I will be entering most of the time. The screen that you are using looks like it will keep the bugs out but it but what about critters like skunks raccoons opossum etc? The screens look like they should keep the bees and wasps out. That’s definitely a plus. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience 😊
amzn.to/4ebcpKp..........amzn.to/48rydjU.......here is there amazon affiliate links to the nets i used this season.... they do keep the bees and wasp out no problem..as well as any thing else....now can something chew a hole in it like a coon yes.. opossum and skunk will not miss with..i had to put electric poultry net around my greenhouse and put a killer dog in too to stop mr coon....cause when that many figs ripen you will smell them..
@@troypriddyFNF thanks for the info
@@troypriddyFNF The link only takes me to Amazon. I tried the link 3 times and it doesn’t show the screen. If you can tell me the name of the screen I will be able to type that in, or try another link. I know you’re busy any help is much appreciated

Sounds like some great information for when I get a big greenhouse. 👍
there is alway some on marketplace.. dont hold back just go for it...big kids bolt together models....lol... i thought it would sure save some one the time and pain of growing something and learn they need to do this after mr critter came by to eat...
@@troypriddyFNF definitely. I will. I have to get some water first.
Nobody tells you these things. Thanks for sharing your experience.
My pleasure!.... i like to show what i have learn to help save others time and trouble
