Can You Shoot with Cinestill 800T in Daylight?
Tried out the Cinestill 800T for a portrait and fashion shoot during the daylight. Being Tungsten balances, I knew I was going to get a cooler white balance result and I wanted to see if mixing in the warm, afternoon light would help balance out the skin stones for a more pleasing end result. Thoroughly enjoy shooting with film in different environments for purely creative experimenting sake. Learned a lot from this and keen to shoot again with this beautiful film stock from Cinestill soon.

NEW Kodak Gold 120 Pushed to 400 and Compared with Portra 400
มุมมอง 6K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Had one roll of Kodak Gold 200 in 120 left and one roll of Portraits 400. Thought it'd be a fun experiment to push the Gold to 400 and compare it with the Portra. Given Gold's characteristics, pushing it actually took some of it away and brought back to more neutral and in line with what you might get from the Portraits 400. It's not the same, but it definitely surprised me how well the Gold 20...
How Does Kodak Portra 400 Look on an Overcast Day?
มุมมอง 9K2 ปีที่แล้ว
A common piece of advice for shooting on film is to shoot with as much light that is available. I've been a Portra 400 shooter for the longest time, just like most people who shoot on film regularly but I've never truly tested what my images would look like when I shot with it on an overcast day with plenty of soft light around, and on a medium format system. Can the NEW Kodak Gold in 120 be used professionally?
มุมมอง 11K2 ปีที่แล้ว
First time shooting with Kodak Gold in the 120 format. I was curious to see how it would handle a variety of mixed lighting situations and how the skin tones would turn out with its unique colour shift/saturation characteristics that Gold is known for. I also wanted to see if it could handle being used in a professional capacity and whether the quality in the 120 format would hold up against th...
bro just sat his setup in the dirt lol
Really beautiful work
Any idea who made his cargo pants?
All in the description!
Nice work dude!
Chur duuude
what gear used for video? and great shoots🙌
good shoots what gear you used?
Thanks! Pentax 645nii + 75mm lens
Pentax 645? I like A LOT of these photos... even if not exactly what you were expecting! Plus it's great to just experiment.
Yeah 645 nii - thanks man, I think looking back on them, it's definitely growing on me, it was a good first try for sure!
that last setting was magic. especially that.
Beautiful work! I'm curious, which lens did you use with the Pentax for this shoot?
Pentax 75 mm f2,8
Biblical (skin)tones
you guys are lucky that you didn't get checked for him jumping on the range rover. kind of not cool actually.
damn, these photos are amazing
I liked the shoot except sitting on someone’s vehicle. You have to give respect to get it.
Stunning photos and color, incredible model
Great framing too, head in the top third not centre, so good.
Nice work, you rated it at ISO 200. And which kens are you using the 75mm?
What camera was that?
I believe he said the Pentax 645
Make more videos
Good video, it will be great aspiration for me! Really liked your photos, tungsten film got kinda dreamy look at daylight)
Great example of how not to shoot this film stock @200 ISO, no one notice the printed data.
In all his shoots it says ISO 200. Perhaps he’s using an external meter.
Grate video Love the film I give you from 1 to 10 I give you a 10
wow the is grate camera goood work nice skin tone but he can push n pull th efilm he would get more of contratsted pastel looking he did good but i know he could do a lot better by pushing or pulling the ISO from 1 to 10 Ill give 9 as a client i would be super happy with the photos. one more thing id you are using the metter in teh camera is ok but i would recomend to use a light meter and when you shoot 400 set in teh camera at 200 n let teh lab know to develop it at 200.00 ISO you will see a wuite intersted tonality n skin tone please dont get me wrong you did fantastic keep deos videos coming.
beautiful model, posing is top, great shots. Love F4 close ups the most. BTW Which lens did you use? I assume it was SMC Pentax- A 645 75mm 2.8 manual or was it autofocus FA?
Thank you! It was the 75mm 2.8 manual focus. I'm gonna buy a autofocus FA shoot cause I need to shoot faster on some jobs and it's annoying to focus with my glasses on haha!
Use an 85b if you wanna get rid of the halation
hey, this is the reason people shoot cinestill, if you don't want to get halation you can shoot kodak vision, and it's way cheaper)
an 85b filter balances the coolness of the film so they don't come out blueish when shooting in daylight but would not get rid of the halation
Great video! When you shot the Portra 400 Were you shooting at 200 iso and then having it pushed one stop similar to how you pushed the gold?
Thanks man. The Portra 400 was just rated at 200 speed, but not pushed. Only the Gold was.
@@joshkaie thanks for the reply!
You have a beautiful model that has a high fashion look. Splash her with some dramatic lighting and you can get some great high fashion looks! Enjoyed the video!
Nice vid. Try off camera flash next time. Add some dimension to your photos!
Nice showcase brother, can’t wait for mine :)
These portraits are so good, such an inspiration :)
Appreciate you for sharing ‼️
cool vid, nice photos. sub!
Thanks for sharing. I love the colors. However, some photos doesn't seem like they're in focus like 6:16, 7:37. Any thoughts?
I adore Gold in 35MM, I can’t wait to shoot the rolls of 120 I’ve got
Loove this look, great content man. Could you let me know what you exposed for (shadows)? Did you overexpose a stop or push/pull? Just bought a couple rolls of 800t and wanted to try daylight shooting! Keep up the great content!
Thanks man. I rated it at 400 speed and I tried to metered for general. I didn’t really meter either side cause I was shooting in soft light most of the time so the dynamic range wasn’t big. So I generally metered for the whole scene. Depending on how much halation you’re wanting in the photos, I recommend metering for somewhere in between shadows and highlights can try 1 stop over exposure and see how you go. That’s usually my go to play for film I haven’t used before. Hope that helps!! Enjoy!
Great video!
Shooting cinestill 800T towards dusk really helped balance it out, but I do really like the cooler tones. It helps set the images apart from typical pastel-leaning portraits.
Yeah, for sure! I was happier with the results towards to end. Still think it was good overall, guess I need to keep challenging myself with different aesthetics rather than the go-to warm and pastel tones, which this shoot helped me with and I've learned a lot from it. Thanks for watching and commenting, appreciate your input!
not sure what sticking his hands out and also putting his hands up to his head is for but no one walks around in public like that. Doesn't look natural, kinda looks awkward.
What a penetrating critique! Can’t wait to see more from you!
It’s not documentary, it’s fashion.
Really enjoyed this vid. I personally loved the colours of this film in daylight and cant wait to try it out. I've only shot on cinestill 50D so far.
Glad you love the results man! Yeah likewise, had only shot on the 50D prior to this shoot. Definitely give it a go, it’s a fun one to experiment with - just gotta try and minimize halation where possible IMO cause otherwise it becomes a bit too much in every photo.
I thought the cool tones lent well to the whites in the shot. Art is subjective I guess lol
Yeah totally. I guess I'm more coming from a portraiture point of view where I'm used to getting the best skin tone in the final results. I think it's not bad at all, it was refreshing to work with cooler tones. But great to hear another opinion on it - maybe something I need to adjust to cause I'm always working with natural light so leaning towards warmer light and warm tones and that might be my bias. The next video I'm recording where I use a warming filler will definitely show a big difference and I guess then we can compare 😝
@@joshkaie I hear that. The warm tones do wonders for portraits especially when the focus is skin tones. I'm curious to see what the difference will be once you had a warming filter. Great chatting with you!

Beautiful work, Josh! Just shot my first rolls of Gold in 120, and it was actually on a portrait shoot as well. Can't wait to check the results! Thanks for sharing!
Love it! Thanks for your comment bro. It's a fun film to use. I think in the 120 formats it does give you a lot more than the 35mm in terms of processing and latitude. I've been trying it in lots of different settings and have been pushing it a fair bit and pretty happy with the results.
Lovely content bro, beautiful pictures!! Just wanted to know how you get your settings correct, do you use a light mater or have mastered how to setup your camera?
Thanks man. Haha I use a light meter on my iPhone. It’s relatively accurate and I just meter it so I’m 1 stop overexposed. So for the Gold I metered for 100 box speed.
Captured some nice shots using simple locations! 👍🏾
Thanks so much! Just taking a walk around the block is so underrated. Sometimes it's all you need!
@@joshkaie Very true!
Those couch shots 😍😍
Yeah, I love them too.
Great stuff, super fun.
Thank you!
josh amazing brooo! what lens are you using?
Thank you, man. Using the 75mm f2.8.
great shots! she's very beautiful. would love to see a second video at golden hour to compare how the skin tone changes. subbed!
Thanks Chris! Appreciate it. I was really hoping for some sun to peek out even for a minute so I could get that comparison! Hoping to use a warming filter next time to see if that helps with skin tone on a grey day.
Great video. Really loved the last half of the video.
Thank you, so much!
Fantastic video. Awesome that you tried something different.
Thank you, man. It's the fun of shooting film! Keen to try and see how I can get better results next time. Thanks for watching 👌🏼
The Portra warm skin tones really helped you. Though you can see the light from the Big Soft Box in the Sky is a little grey on her skin. Maybe a warming filter on the lens would help.
Definitely! That’s a great suggestion. Thanks!
