Are you thinking about visiting Sri Lanka? 🇱🇰 While it’s often marketed as a tropical paradise, my recent trip showed me a different side. Here are 10 reasons why Sri Lanka might not be the ideal travel destination for everyone: 1. Transport Issues: Many times, traveling from one city to another, I had to transfer via Colombo, which did not make sense at all - it's challenging and time-consuming. 2. Inflated Prices: Due to Sri Lanka's struggling economy and the depreciating rupee, tourists pay 4-5x of the normal price. It's a negative! 3. Overcharging: You don't speak Sinhala (the local language) and you're a tourist- be prepared to be overcharged everywhere! This makes you feel cheated. 4. Reality vs. Photos: Many hotels and accommodations across Sri Lanka often look far less appealing in reality than in their online photos. This is about ALL the cities in the Sri Lanka other than Colombo. 5. Food Safety Concerns: Street food and local restaurants may not meet the hygiene standards travelers are accustomed to, and hence lots of food borne illnesses. 6. Power cuts, inconsistent wifi - I faced this everywhere except Colombo. 7. Wildlife Encounters: The abundance of animals, including crocodiles, can be unnerving. Signs warning about crocodiles in urban areas might be normal for locals, but it 100% made me feel unsafe. 8. All kinds of tourist scams are present in Sri Lanka. 9. Political Instability: Recent years have seen significant political unrest and protests, which can make travel plans uncertain and even unsafe. 10. Overcrowded Tourist Spots: Popular destinations like Ella, Kandy, and Sigiriya are often swarming with tourists, diminishing the charm and tranquility you might be seeking. While every destination has its unique charm, I faced some issues. I hope sharing my experiences helps you decide if it's the right destination for you. Learn the truth about Korea! 🚫 Know these FACTS when you visit. I personally felt so conscious about number 2 and 9 🚫 1. Drinking culture It's common to drink 'Bomb shots' which is Soju mixed with beer. This is mandatory in the working culture here which can be intense for those not accustomed to it. This is 100% messed up to me. 2. In 🇰🇷 it's perfectly okay to give someone a nose plastic surgery for your birthday. It sounded so messed up to me. 🫥 3. Unrealistic beauty standards for both men and women that pushes young people towards surgery on their perfectly fine faces. 4. Both genders have it bad over here. The men in SK commit suicide at the highest rate for a developed country, and among all countries, aren't they top 3? Women have to focus on beauty, children with a well-off man, and an education. Men have to be in the top 5, or they aren't considered successful at all. Coming in 2nd place has even caused men to go off themselves. No point debating who has it worse there. It's all shit. 5. Get paid less to do more. They deserve a raise. 6. Very capitalist. I think people are forgetting that Capitalism is a tool to be efficient not the goal itself. Ideology should exist for people, not the other way. 7. Koreans traditionally count age differently, with everyone turning a year older on New Year's Day rather than on their individual birthdays. (they also add 1 year because we spend time in the womb) 100% weird. 8. Korean Sauna Etiquette: In jjimjilbangs (Korean saunas), it is normal to walk around naked in gender-segregated areas, which can be uncomfortable to those not accustomed to it. The women do splits and exercise freely. 100% weird. 9. Fan Culture: The dedication of K-pop fans, known as "stans," can go extreme here. I don't get it. I have a wild dream to be able to buy this bike someday and bicycle from India to UK . The distance is not much - only 10500kms 🚵‍♀️🙊😂🩷 There is a lot to prepare: buy an electric bike, figure out how to plug in while on the go in different terrains and conditions, do bike makeover for it to fit different items that I would need in the journey, go to the dentist, try to publicise the trip and get a sponsor so I don’t have to spend 2 years eating instant noodles from a camping stove, find clothing to fit all weathers, documents and official permissions from the countries I am going to pass through, figure out safety as a solo female traveller, read about different parts of an electric bike and know if one fails how to fix it and so many more things before I go on a test run ⚠️💯 But I need your help! I just completed a 97kms ride along the Jeju Fantasy Bike Trail in South Korea. ✨️🚴‍♀️ I have never thought I'd have the courage or be 'crazy' enough to take on such a challenge.🙊 While I met some incredibly adventurous people, like a couple I encountered in Phong Nha who cycled from the UK to Vietnam over seven months and many other people, my journey in Jeju was uniquely mine. 🎈😅 I conquered various terrains, from small hills to salt flats, farms, bustling markets, fast highways, serene coastal roads, bridges, etc. 🌄 Jeju was a wild ride I never thought I'd take.🇰🇷 What's your favorite outdoor activity? I spent 1 month in Korea this year, and many activities here shocked me. Some of them are fun, and some of them can be a bit scary if you don’t know about them ahead of time. Below are 10 things I tell every one of my friends that comes to experience culture in Korea. 1. Fruit is a luxury experience here 🥲 As most fruits have to be flown in, it costs a lot to transport them 2. Beauty Industry Obsession Anything you have ever desired to fix about yourself is achievable and usually quite affordable, especially in Seoul. There is an obsession with appearance that can lean into the toxic side.💄 3. The pressure of perfection This definitely gets to you if you are outside of the desired standard. So just remember to stay gentle with yourself and give yourself some extra self-love when you’re here!🙋‍♀️ 4. PDA Almost everything here is designed to be a cute date activity. If you’re single and already feel lonely at home, good luck soldier. You’re gonna feel worse. 😂 5. Free wifi everywhere! You can always stay connected.You can definitely rely on it in Seoul. 📶 6. Maps are in Korean! Here, we use Naver Map instead of Google Maps. You won't find English words at all. Just rely on it for the location and match the place with the photos on the naver map. (searching for food is a pain. You can't type 'Curry' in English and expect to get results on Naver Map)😕 7. Quiet and respectful people Koreans don’t talk on buses or trains as it is seen as a big disrespect to the personal space of others - this extends to making a phone call. 🤫 8. Tattoo culture There is negative perception regarding it, and people tend to hide them. This may be steadily changing here.〽️ 9. Cafes everywhere You might not get your type of food easily here, but you will never be short of coffee. ☕️ 10. Comments on Appearance There is an emphasis on being polished in appearance; slim; well-dressed; made-up (if you are a woman); and having healthy, glowing skin. If you do not meet these standards, it’s very possible that someone will let you know… to your face.
