DIY Folding Squat Rack - Hinges & J-Hooks

So basically, it's just 2 pieces of steel the same width as the arms, welded at 90 degrees to a base plate. Very importantly, you'll see I left a 5-10mm space above and below the arm, this is what allows you to lift the upright ever so slightly to swing it against the wall.
Overall dimensions:
Uprights: 2500mm
Arms: 1050mm
Width apart: based on a standard Olympic barbell - 1100mm Hole spacing: 50mm for squat, 25mm for bench press

Until I built this rig, I could only do bar muscle-ups. It was awesome to finally have a rig at home that I could practice with. Fortunately, I got my first ring muscle-up while testing out the rig for the first time. Yes, magnetic lights :) not ideal as you have to change the batteries, but easier than wiring it all up if you’re in a pickle :)

How many hours did this take to build
It took me 3 weekends in total. Looking back, if I had used an HSS hole saw bit instead of a drill bit, it would have sped up the process quite a bit

Solid as a rock. As I’m not an engineer by any means, I used thicker steel than I probably needed to, but that just adds to the sturdiness I guess!

I'm surprised with some of the negative reviews. I was so impressed with the th-cam.com/users/postUgkxMwYg0MOXR4M-oGeyBsNSYe1aPOUoRH6D cage that I got the lat pulldown attachment that goes with it. It is equally outstanding. I don't have one complaint other than putting it together is a job. The instructions and packaging of the parts are very well designed and organized. Also, I stripped and damaged the pull down cable the first day, admitting it was my stupid fault, and they quickly replaced it at no charge. I'm 6'5, 280lbs and fit in the cage just fine. Glenn B
With this rack, I designed it to include a pull up bar and a bench. So I use the rack for front/back squats, pull ups and bench press 👍

Hey Manny, i would have definitely used a hole saw on the drill instead of a regular bit. It is WAY faster!

Hi Ashton, the steel was sponsored for the most part, however this braai was far bigger than most standard built-in braais and would certainly cost less.

It's nice but in the video it could have been more useful to cover the brackets and the folding parts instead of how to cut the 6m long steel into pieces.

If I had half those tools I'd try this, but as it stands I own a power and impact drill :D
Just keep growing your collection of tools one by one :) used stuff (like my welding machine) generally does the job at a fraction of the price. Don’t give up ;)

Hey Raul. I bought my welding machine used, having never used a welder before. I just gave it a try and it has turned out to be a game changer. It is a skill (which I am yet to master) that opens up a world of new possibilities.

Why would you not use ear protection with all that drilling?
Sadly, I used a normal drill bit for the first bajillion holes before I realised a HSS cut out bit would be 10,000 times faster, which is also so much less intrusive on the ear holes!
Struan, why not put your plans on a pdf and make a killing? There’s lots of trash out there. Your design is awesome! I’ll be the first to buy them.

Hey Jonathan, the uprights rest firmly on the floor to support the weight, the arms are there purely for support. The hinges have enough room to allow the arms to swing out :)
You could add threaded leveling feet. Unfold the rack, unscrew the feet to get firm contact with the ground. Just use a big enough diameter of bolt to support the weight
