    Muay Thai allows punches, kicks, knees, elbows, grabbing the leg, clinching (no time limit), and throws. It's kind of like kickboxing but more flexible, and of course, it doesn't allow any kind of ground game or submission, Muay Thai is a pure standing fight.

    The lady you see Yodkhunpon training with here, Sylvie Von Duuglas-Ittu is actually a very interesting person herself. She is an American fighter (from Colorado) who moved to Thailand together with her husband (who is a photographer and journalist) about 10 years ago. She started Muay Thai training in the US, learning from an older ex-fighter from Thailand and fell in love with the sport very much. She had a few fights in the US but ultimately decided that she had to go the the arts motherland and learn Muay Thai there. Her first Teacher ("Master K") didn't have a very long fighting carreer and "only" had something around 80 fights which to her was still crazy. so she moved over to Thailand and started training and fighting. She'd take on any fights she could get and racked up first 50, then 100 fights. Usually, in fights between Thais and Westerners, the Westerner usually ends up being bigger. Weight classes are not always precisely observed, especially at smaller fights and so differences like that happen. oftentimes, you will see a westerner with more mass and power fight a thai with better technique or more experience. The funny thing with Sylvie is, that at around 45kg and only 157cm of height, she is even smaller than most of Thai female fighters. So to even get as many fights as she wanted, she had to start not caring much about weight and often fighting at a disadvantage against heavier opponents. Nowadays, she's developed so much in experience, technique, tactics, cardio and strength that fighting opponents in her own weight class (which happens rarely anyways) usually ends up in her ragdolling those girls into a very dominant win. She is a great fan of Dieselnoi especially and also friends with him and many Muay Thai legends. Via Patreon she has made it her mission to find and learn from as many of the old legends as possible and film her training sessions with her to preserve the knowledge about the art that otherwise would be lost. That is why you see so many videos of her training with legendary fighters or interviewing them or commenting on fights. Another thing is, that she has set a goal to actually beat the world record for most official fights ever, across all combat sports, that is currently held by british boxer Len Wickwar at 473 fights. That is a HUGE number even in comparison to most Thai fighters. By now she has racked up 273 fights and gotten more and more successful in them even winning some champion titles in Thailand, even in weight classes higher than her own (because she usually gives up weight when she fights). Her style is mainly Muay Khao, a forward pushing clinch and knee fighter with insane cardio levels but has become much more well rounded over time. 273 fights give you A LOT of experience. Actually I saw one video where Dieselnoi himself, while training with her, was laughing about how she has so many more fights than he had in his time (Dieselnoi had to retire early because there were no more opponents for him).

    • @aalvinooo

      @@aalvinooo you know, the Thai press likes to give nicknames to fighters who tend to show an individual style or whatever. That's where all those nicknames come from that you heard about for many fighters. Sylvie actually got one of those, too a few years ago and was very pround to see it. Her's is "sao nakleng-khao" which translates to "Miss Gangster-Knee" which is, to be honest, quite accurate, cause tiny as she is, Those knees are DEADLY!

    About Muay Thai scoring: a KO is a win. see my other post for some explanation about what a KO can be. A Technical KO (TKO) is also a win which is actually something that Yodkhunpon would score relatively often. A TKO is for example when something like an Elbow gives you a mean cut that wont stop bleeding and maybe bleeds into your eye so the ring-doctor decides it's too dangerous to continue. Apart from KOs and TKOs. Succesfull attacks score of course (and some attacks score more than others, for example kicks score more than punches) but most of all, Muay Thai is a game of establishing dominance. Dominance over your opponent is what you are trying to demonstrate throughout a fight. Even if your opponent lands more hits in an exchange you might still "win" this exchange if you can demonsntrate that those hits didn't effect you and you come out in a dominant position. That's also why Thai fighters train to look totally uneffected by anything you throw at them. If your opponent strikes you and you can walk straight through it, that basically nullifies whatever your opponent did. There are quite a few different styles and approaches to Muay Thai. Some fighters go for points, some go for nullifying anything their opponent does and countering, others go for knockouts.

  • @NewAeonWarlord
    @NewAeonWarlord ปีที่แล้ว

    About KOs in Muay Thai: they actually do happen quite a bit but not every KO is a headshot to unconsciousness. A KO might also be cause by leg-kicks when the fighters legs finally give out or by bodyshots (knees especially) that can make you break down. Also I guess you have to consider that Thai fighters tend to be quite a bit smaller and lighter than western boxers and even in Boxing, KOs dont happen as frequently in the lighter weightclasses because only the heavy guys typically can put one punch KO power into more or less every punch. I'm sure that's a factor as well. Also Muay Thai fights are not as long as Boxing fights. The standard is 5 rounds with some more modern promotions that want more action going for 3 round fights.

    • @aalvinooo
      @aalvinooo ปีที่แล้ว

      How many years of experience do you think I’d need to be good at Muay Thai?

    • @NewAeonWarlord
      @NewAeonWarlord ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aalvinooo hmm that's hard to tell. also what "good" is ;) Since you're a boxer, I'd say you'd start out at an advantage though. I don't know what level you're at but solid boxing skills would sure come in handy. I'd imagine that the easiest way in would be to adapt that to more of a "dutch kickboxing" style, combining solid boxing with mainly lowkicks and some other kicks and teeps (straight pushkicks). Especially lowkicks can fit right into punching combinations and add that low level. I personally don't have all that much practical experience. I only practiced Muay Thai for some 2 years and never with the aim of becoming an actual fighter.

    • @aalvinooo
      @aalvinooo ปีที่แล้ว

      My boxing skills are not the best but they are decent…I actually plan on posting some training clips soon but I see what you’re saying though. I want to learn a little bit of Muay Thai because it translates more in real life street fights. Also is there like an “amateur” ranking for Muay Thai or you just go straight to pro?

    • @NewAeonWarlord
      @NewAeonWarlord ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aalvinooo I have no idea about the US but here in Germany for example. you can get quite a few amateur kickboxing fights. actual Muay Thai (with elbows and all that) is much less common though.

    Ramon Dekkers, the Diamond, the Turbine from Hell. Yes, he was aggressive and brutal but also with great skill. That earned him the respect of Thailands Muay Thai scene. A lof of them still regard Dekkers as the best Farang (westerner) to ever have fought there. He did loose a few fights unfairly due to bias and well.... a KO doesn't leave much room for interpretation so that's what he went for any time he had the opportunity which, with his style and power, happened quite a lot. The Dutch Kickboxing style he is famous for is influenced by Muay Thai rather than Karate. One thing you will see a lot with fighters of that style is solid combinations of boxing and lowkicks especially. Kickboxing doesn't alow elbows and knees (well, knees are allowed sometimes, it depends on the ruleset). You're right btw: in his aggression style he was similar to Namkabuan though Namkabuan was more of what happens when you have a Muay Femue (a technical, artful fighter) with aggression and no patience while Dekkers was more of a forward pushing power-fighter, kind of like Buakaw in a way. That's a style Thais would probably call a Muay Buk or maybe a Muay Mat (a puncher). Dieselnoi for example is a Muay Khao, a "knee fighter". As for more recommendations, I'd recommend Yodkhunpon Sittraiphum, "The Elbow Hunter of 100 Stitches" if you want to see how to use calculated but relentless forward preasure and the perfect eye for elbows in Muay Thai. I bet someone you'd also enjoy seeing is Rambaa Somdet. This absolutely crazy guy was not only a Muay Thai champion but also one of the first Thais to successfully fight in MMA. The guy is kind of a freak, a dancing knockout artist who knows exactly how to hurt an opponent whenever the oportunity presents itself. Both of these fighters still train people to this day.

    Sagat is a pretty insane dude. he still trains people today and actually looks more like Sagat from the Street Fighter games today than he did then (bald head and all). He is all about perfectly developed, powerfull strikes "in frame". When you look at him move, he never swings wide from the outside. All of his attacks and how he generates power are very tight. Muay Thai fighters use more parts of their body than boxers obviously but boxers tend to be better hand specialists than Muay Thai fighers (which makes sense of course). That's also why the Muay Thai guard is different though. You have the legs to worry about, too so you often defent lower attacks with your own legs or push-kicks which allows for the guard that your hands/arms form to be higher and protect better agains stuff like elbows. If you use elbows a lot, the aim is often to win by a TKO, for example by causing a cut as you saw at one point in this video. The black fighter you commented on here is Peter Cunningham, and you are right, this dude really has skills. Sagat fought him several times. Peter "Sugarfoot" Cunningham is not a Muay Thai fighter though but an american full contact kickboxer. Kickboxing in this style developed out of Karate and you can see the difference in approach in the video. this kind of kickboxing usually has a much more "bladed", sideways stance that enables stuff like quick side-kicks but also leaves you open for low-kicks that lots of Thai fighters like to use. You can actually KO someone with low-kicks in the sense that their legs will just give out after taking too much of a beating and they wont be able to continue. I've seen it happen several times. About the dancing: Muay Thai includes rituals that go back to old animistic believes and concepts of respecting your elders/superiors and teachers. There is a ritual performed before Muay Thai fights that has two parts, the Wai Kru and the Ram Muay. that is also when they wear the ritual headdress that is called a Mongkol or Mongkon. "wai" is the respectul form of greeting or thanking like Thais normally do with folded hands (like christians do for prayer) and a bow. "kru" is a teacher so the "wai kru" is a ritual to respect and thank your teachers and forebears. it also involves circling the ring along the ropes, usually with a small stop and ritual at each corner and a bow or similar towards your own corner that represents your teacher, your gym and so on. The Wai Kru then flows into the Ram Muay which means "fighting dance". There are comon elements in those dances but it is largely up to the fighter how exactly they do it, if they add anything and so on. generally, a Ram Muay is passed from the teacher to the younger fighter who might add his own details. some fighters are very elaborate with this, others not so much. for some it's more of a ritual to center and calm yourself, others make it more aggressive or even threatening to their opponents like the archery part you saw Sagat do. Apart from this, the dance kind of invokes aspects of creatures from ancient folklore (Garuda birds and things like that) and also demonstrates the balance, grace and skill of the fighter. As I commented last time, Sagat is quite an expressive fighter and so his Ram Muay was pretty eleborate and expressive, too.

      @@aalvinooo There is actual videos of Sagat still fighting at somewhere around 55-60 years old. not competitively, but against another old-school legend from his time. Thais sometimes like to have "fights" more for demonstration and showing respect where the outcome will always be a draw because it's not actually a competitive fight but either something to hype people up, to demonstrate Muay Thai, or to show respect to someone or something. For example, Dieselnoi and Samart did a short, "show" repeat of their legendary fight, both at around 60 years old. I've even seen fighters do their Ram Muay and have a friendly, respectufl short "fight" at an old friends (and fellow fighters) funeral. But yes, Sagat is still in really good shape for his age and he also still acts as a Muay Thai teacher.

    Actually, I just remembered another fighter you'd probably enjoy a lot: Ramon Dekkers. He was a Dutch fighter who loved the sport so much he was one of the first to basically go to Thailand and set out to beat the Thais at their own game. CHeck out a Video titled "Ramon Dekkers - Beautiful Brutality (Knockouts & Highlights)". With him, you will see a lot of aggressive fighting, boxing and lowkicks especially. In the beginning he lost some fights due to things like the different way of judging fights in Thailand and probably also national bias in some cases. So whenever possible, he would go for the knockout because you know... a KO doesn't leave any room for bullshit. so "beautiful brutality" captures the concept quite well. This man, when in the ring, really was out to take you down. His nicknames were "The Diamond" or even scarier "The Turbine from Hell".

    If you want to see more about knees and elbows, check out a fighter called Yodkhunpon Sittraiphum who was nicknamed The Elbow Hunter of 100 Stitches. A very calm and friendly dude in real live but damn, fighting this man must have been scary! Watching him fight, I'm thinking it must have felt like drowning while trying to defend against being cut up. There was like no way to keep the guy off you. If you want to see another one of those more well rounded fighters that also had great boxing abilities (like some others, he was a Muay Thai fighter AND a boxer), check out Sagat Petchyindee. A man who is said to have been the inspiration for the character "Sagat" in the Street Fighter games. He also had a lot of international fights, most famously against great american Kickboxer Peter Cunningham. Those fights are a fun watch actually because both Sagat and Peter are not only very good but also very expressive fighters.

    Dieselnoi is interesting. Yes Samart is regarded the greatest by A LOT OF PEOPLE, but not by everyone. Dieselnoi is another contender for that spot. He was at least a weightclass above Samart which meant he had to go through a brutal weight cut to face him in the 80s. Samart and Dieselnoi are actually friends to this day. Btw "Dieselnoi" is a fight name (Thais usually use fightnames and their 'last name' as a fighter is their gym's name) and it means "little diesel". This man IS very tall for a Thai but as you saw, he was very lanky, too. With his long guard, one hand out like he usually did, I always think he looks like a praying mantis stalking you down. Interestingly, despite his range advantage, he was a close-range specialist. As you may have noticed, Dieselnoi almost never punches. he moved forward whenever possible and used good manouvering, push-kicks and round kicks to manouver his opponents and cut off their lines of escape. In this way he walked them down untill he was able to get them into clinch range. Once in clinch, he would manouver them into disadvantegous positions and procede to wreak havoc with those knees that are some of the most brutal ever seen. This style did require not only skill but also insane levels of cardio. It suits him because if you watch him train, or teach people, even nowadays, with heart problems, some fat and a lung that doesn't work so well anymore, this man on a skale of 1-10 knows only 1 or 11. He actually talked about how when training for fights, even after everyone else had finished and went home, he'd still be in the gym for like another hour crying and slamming the heavybag with knees to keep up the insane level. Compared to other Muay Thai greats, he has relatively few fights (only around 160 as opposed to others who often had over 200 or even 300 fights) because from a certain point onward, it was really hard to find opponents for him, especially after he had beaten the best fighters even at the weight classes above and below his own. So he instead helped train his gym-mates and basically had to retire early from actual fighting. Muay Thai fighters usually wear shorts. in the 80s though, there were quite a few international fights of Thais fighting american Kickboxers which is what you see with the dudes in long pants and whatnot. These were kinda weird fights, usually with custom rulesets because Muay Thai and US Kickboxing had quite different rules. Here, Dieselnois style was even more devestating because those fighters were not used to including clinch and knees and had a really hard time defending against such things as you can see. Dieselnoi is good friends with Sylvie von Duuglas-Ittu who you also saw in the Namkabuan video. She has trained with him quite a lot, especially since she has a very similar style to his and is a big fan. Which is even more interesting when you see that Sylvie, as opposed to Dieselnoi, is actually a very small and light fighter who is even often outweighed even by the Thai women she fights.

    Thanks for doing this! Nice reaction! Thailand has 2 national stadiums that are very prestigious fighting arenas. Those are Lumpinee and Rajadamnern. In the video clips you can see of Sylvie here, the somewhat older guy in the first clip that demonstrates how people hit the ropes, that is Namkabuan. The young guy she trains wil later is Bank, a young stadium fighter from the gym she fought out of at the time. Yes there are weight classes in Muay Thai. In the past that was not the case but it's one of the things they adopted from western boxing, like the use of a modern boxing ring, too. Actually the plowing that Namkabuan was famous for is not allowed anymore. The rule got changed some time after he fought. If I remember correctly you can now only do max 1 step forward while holding your opponents leg. Namkabuan is not with us anymore unfortunately. He went on to run a restaurant in his later live and not long ago he actually died relatively young because of a really bad case of cancer. From what I've seen of him in videos with Sylvie, he was a really cool and fun dude. I remember someone telling a funny little story about his daughter's teacher finding out who his student's father was and telling her he needed to be careful because he wouldn't want her dad to beat him up or something along those lines. Funnily, his kid(s?) was confused at that as she wasn't even really aware of the hights her dad had reached as a fighter.

    Somrak was another one of those amazing technical fighters. Yes, knockouts happen in Muay Thai quite a lot but not every kind of fighter aims for one. Of course the WILL KO if the chance presents itself but especially the more technically oriented fighters tend to fight "backwards" a lot and counter or nullify their opponents moves. Muay Thai in Thailand is scored somewhat different to western boxing. Yes, hits count but the most important thing is if you can demonstrate dominance over your opponent. I have another very entertaining fighter to suggest: Namkabuan Nongkeepahuyut. Check out a video called "The Master Of Aggressive Ring Craft"! Namkabuan also was a fighter of high technical skill level but as opposed to most other fighters with this skillset (like Samart, Saenchai and so on), he typically fought very aggressively. The result was pretty damn spectacular! The video does a good job of breaking down his style.

    Samart did Muay Thai AND western boxing and was great at both of them. Yes, he is still alive. He actually became an actor and singer after his fighting career. Many people regard him the greatest of all time in Muay Thai. That is not undisputed though as there are some other contenders, too. If you want to see some fighters that did NOT use boxing a lot and instead focused on other stuff within the realms of Muay Thai. I suggest taking a look at Dieselnoi for example. He's a fighter from the same age as Samart. The two are actually friends and their fight (Dieselnoi had to go through a brutal weight cut apparently because he was above Samarts weight class) was THE fight in the 80s. Dieselnoi is legendary for being a knee specialist. He actually hardly EVER used punches, instead relying especially on push-kicks, clinch and knees with insane level of cardio.

    Somrak Khamsing's fight record: Muay Thai: 300+ fights with only 12 losses. 96% win rate. Boxing: 200+ fights with 150 wins. He never won any belts in Thailand since everyone was scared of him. No seriously, it's not that the promoters themselves wanted to avoid him; it was the fighters themselves who didn't want to fight him for a belt cuz they already knew who would win. He won an olympic gold medal in boxing though.

    What do you mean how are they slicker than some real boxers? Like it's not real. Actual Thai Muay Thai fighters can usually chill through fights against westerners. They don't have to try hard because they have hugely more fights under their belt. These guys start as small kids. On top of that, even amongst all of that competition, Lerdsila is literally the most evasive one there's ever been. More so than Somrak or Saenchai. Saenchai's technical game may be even better overall across the board, maybe, but on the defensive technique specifically no one's ever matched Lerdsila.
