Monterey Bay: The Science of Sea Lions, Otters, Pelicans, and Kelp – Lessons from Kayak Adventure!
If you’re ever nervous about trying something new, remember: it’s okay to wobble at first. That’s where the adventure begins!
Join Atom on an unforgettable school trip to Monterey Bay! October 25, 2024, was a day filled with excitement as students and teachers, including myself, embarked on a tandem kayaking adventure along the stunning Del Monte Beach. This experience was more than just paddling-it was a journey of teamwork, learning, and connecting with the incredible marine environment around us. From navigating the waters to observing and learning about sea lions, otters, brown pelicans, and sea kelp up close, it was a day of scientific discovery and fun for everyone!
Special thanks to one of my amazing students for sharing her stunning Monterey Bay video clip, which opens this episode, and to our Head of School, Brian Yager, for capturing the perfect photo of Kathy and me tandem kayaking. Most importantly, my heartfelt thanks to Kathy for being my tandem kayak partner!
Topics Covered:
--Tandem Kayaking Basics
Teamwork, rhythm, and trust in paddling.
Applying Newton’s Third Law of Motion in real-time to kayaking
-Sea Lions
Unique physical traits, swimming skills, and vocal communication.
Their ecological role and fascinating behaviors.
-Sea Otters
Incredible adaptations, from dense fur to tool use.
The remarkable bond between mother otters and pups.
Endangered species.
-California Brown Pelicans
History of near-extinction and comeback.
Impact of environmental challenges like DDT and climate change.
-Sea Kelp
Fast-growing “rainforest of the sea” and its importance.
Uses in daily life and role in combating climate change.
-Reflection

Wish I could find Norwegian beer here in the US.
Amazing! Super informative
Thank you!
Very interesting. (Unfortunately, Carlsberg has taken the oportunity to whitewash their name by sponsing this video. Carlsberg has an unhealty influence on the Norwegian beermarket after buying up the principal beerbrand Ringnes. Ther manipulation of "lettøl" was nasty.) Yours Jens, Oslo
I am a Physics and Chemistry teacher who has been teaching about the Bohr atomic model for the last 25 years. So, I was on a teacher grant from my school to study the life and contributions of Niels Bohr. This video is a brief summary based on that. Not affiliated or supported by any other organization.

That is good information Terry. Thank you!
Wow! Copenhagen is a shining beacon for future sustainability goals!
Yes it is! Thanks Ushnish!
Is tin safe for cooking? As in eeya chombu? That’s a question we get asked often !
Tin is ok for cooking, but is expensive compared to stainless steel. "Eeyam" is Lead which is not safe since Lead is a toxic metal.
🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
yeah its corny and not the best storytelling, but it's got a lot of historical and science application tidbits, it's meant to pique your interest in the subject by teaching you.
@@tiberiusG Thank you for your support! I hope students will see that the periodic table is magical, filled with unique elements that have fascinating properties, uses, and intriguing historical stories. They are far from being just dull, boring metals or non-metallic gases.
How delightful! 😊. tavi.
Thank you!
Thanks ❤
