ADHD, Autism and PMDD
This is a topic that is rarely discussed when it comes to diagnoses but it's important because the prevalence is just so high. So today, we're going to talk about it.

Welcome to the crew!
That’s a very intersting point. I just added the article to my (already way too long) list of papers I would like to read. The thought has actually crossed my mind before: After figuring out that I was autistic, I realized that when I had applied for professional pilot training at a major airline, the tests used as part of the application process were pretty much designed to filter out neurodivergent people. They did not use the Big-5, but rather used a combination of one-and-one role with a psychologist and group work by the applicants that was observed by the psychologist. They explained that they only wanted to hire people that were “a good fit” to the pilots they already had, and considering how important good communication is in the cockpit, I actually agree with this point. At the same time, it is problematic when a minority group is basically denied access to certain jobs, just on the basis that they do not fit with the people already doing the job. More recently, this topic came up for me again when I thought about whether I should hire someone for my business. For obvious reasons, I would prefer to work with someone who has a communication style that is similar to mine, but would it be ethical to not hire a person just because they are neurotypical?
This is such an interesting point you've raised around how important communication is in these situations. I think that "fit" is always a bit of a dodgy one because sometimes it can be used as a way of subtly discriminating against people who are a bit different and can lead to group-think, but I understand the need for good communication. However, I would argue that good communication doesn't have to mean the exclusion of other neurotypes and so I disagree with the personality assessments being used for that reason. I sympathise with your goal of finding a communication style that works with yours and maybe I would say that searching for a communication style that works with yours may lead to more neurodivergent applicants but it doesn't have to be neurodivergent and keeps the possibility open of finding a really good and empathetic neurotypical communicator. You're not excluding a neurotypical for being neurotypical, you're excluding them for not being able to communicate in the way you need which is something they could work towards improving if they so wanted to. Does that make sense?
@@ThroughTheNoiseCoaching Yes, this makes sense to me. After more consideration, I also think that inadvertently discriminating against neurotypical people (because they are not willing or able to adjust their communication style) is not the same thing as discriminating againt neurodivergent people, because the first group does not represent a minority. Neurotypical people have plenty of options for finding a work environment that matches their natural communication style. For neurodivergent people, this may be much harder, simply because we are fewer people and thus there fewer work environments where our natural communication style is the predominant one.
thank you so much for this video! this topic is not talked about enough!
For sure! I'm really interested to see what more research comes out in this space now that it's starting to get some attention!!
"Generally confused by the idea of relaxation". - HA, I feel this. ❤😂 What a wonderful retreat it was. Despite the crawling creatures. 😅 Thank you for the great summary.
I also received my first fidget there. I am now the proud owner of several types of fidget tools. 😂
I believe confused is an apt term 😂. It was so lovely to meet you there and I'm so glad to be connected now!!
@@ThroughTheNoiseCoaching Same, I really enjoyed our conversation 😊🫶🏻
I also didn’t know what to expect from a retread-just like you but was trusting in Sam who knew who she tried to gather together and that it would be different than other retreats and more tailored to our neurodivergent needs. And the opportunity of being together with other tribesmembers was a hughe pull for me! And it worked out so beautifully. It really is a rare occasion in real life! 😢 I definitely need more of this 😊 So I am one of those who would have liked at least one more day with you all. 😊 The business-aspect originally was not my top priority but turned out surprisingly helpful in the process I find myself in: finding out how I really „function“ and what it is I need to run my everydaylife smoothly 👍 Sarah and Sam’s workshops really did a wonderful job guiding me towards myself 💫 I am so grateful! Thank you for putting the summary out there and letting me relive the whole experience in a nutshell today 😊
Very interesting videos , keep up the good work
Thank you very much! Glad you're enjoying them!
Uhhhh, interesting topic! I have been wondering about this a lot and came to similar conclusions 😊❤
Thank you! Creative brains like to think of these fun topics 😁
@@ThroughTheNoiseCoaching yeees!
Wow 😳
It's not personal. Its just the findings from their study. Thats unless you were a part of their study.
I agree that the study itself and the intent of it was indeed not personal. Yet, the impact of it may seem like a personal attack due to the broad range of personality qualities listed that also overlap with a significantly large portion of adults in the general population without ADHD (About 96% of adults). So yes, the study is not meant to be personal at all but the impact that it had from the traits listed especially on her and many other people (including me, never have been diagnosed with ADHD or any mental disorder for that matter) definitely feels like a personal attack or targeting which is just a normal thing that I naturally accept without a feeling of enragement or anger.
@ecolearningyt I'm also have ADHD, but it's still not personal. It only becomes personal if you allow it, so it's a choice you're making.
Let me get my cal-que-lee-8-tor so I can cal-que-lee-8
....and here YOU are....
This is why my metabolism sucks, because I get distracted by things through the day and don't think about it, then when I notice I'm STARVING so I overeat because I've accidentally skipped meals. Same with videogames and sleep. Don't realize I'm tired until I decide to stop or if my body starts shutting down and fall asleep eventually.
It can be so hard to manage! Thankfully my partner has normal interoception and sticks to regular meal times so I become regulated based on him. Do alarms or anything like that help?
So true
And personally for me when I get over-hungry there’s barley anything I’ll eat
wow this is very informative... thanks
Thank you! I'm so glad it was helpful! Following up with part 2 very soon!!
5:27 I like how you started talking something completely different to the topic and started smiling. I do the same..😅
You caught me - guilty!! 😅
Hi dear, I actually didn’t got the change to diagonised myself for ADHD, but I m pretty sure I have it. And now I can confirm I got ADHD because while I was watching your clip I could figured out you used some of your previous video clips here 😂. And OMG I was half way bored while writing this text.
Haha yes I definitely reuse the piano clips!! Diagnosis is always a personal decision but learning about ADHD and applying the tricks you've learnt to your life is always going to be a benefit regardless!
true!
Another awesome video 😍
Thank you so much ❤️
Great content.... Definitely putting it on my status. 🎉
the fuck you talking about
Unfortunately, our society is BUILT on things that ADHD sufferers are bad at. Focussing on the things I am good at would leave me homeless and without a job.
I'm not saying don't manage your weaknesses but there are also things that ADHDers and you as a specific individual are amazing at and using them in your life and career and instead of fighting to make strengths the things you're bad at, or feeling bad about yourself because of them, will get you further. I'm not saying give up and become homeless. The video this comes from goes into this more.
Make strengths of the things you're bad at*
It's like sexism, but is different thinking not gender, we are made to think we are less than others
Nice video! Whoever reading this still thinking that all she said is nonsense, you're on the first step towards understanding what she's saying and why; please don't stop there, or you'll perpetuate the problem that she's talking about 👍
Everyone grows up in a world not made for us
Except rich (preferably white) conservatives. The world is made for them, turns around for them, everyone works to make them richer.
It's never too late to research enough to understand what this person is saying in the video

Oh shut up
I think cat behavior shows this very well. My cats switch attention so fast it makes them appear chaotic, but 9 times of 10 it is this behavior that allows them to catch insects, which they love to eat. Have a good day!
Love this so much. Love a good cat analogy ❤️. Have a great day too!
Hey! I’m struggling, haven’t been diagnosed. Curious to know what things adhd has made difficult for you.
I put a lot of thoughts about potential signs into the long form video this short comes from so you might want to take a look. Everyone's ADHD presents differently but for me it's the interest based attention making it hard to do boring or repetitive stuff and the emotional dysregulation that hits me hardest
Amazing, thank you for sharing
I'm glad it was helpful ❤️
ADHD leads to earlier sexual activity and a higher incidence of pre-marital pregnancies allowing the genes to pass on despite any potential reductions in life expectancy of the individual with ADHD. I do not buy into the evolutionary advantage beyond transmission of genes. There are too many deficits, even for foraging (e.g., missing food options due to distractions or hyperfixation on other things and moving on too quickly).
Don't hate me for saying this But When i looked at u I thought mr bean 😶
Maybe it's ur eyebrows

Im also a verbal processor, I really need a buddy. I also need to be taught things : I love how to's, templates and checklists !
Ah yeah having a buddy to process with or just body double is so useful! Sounds like you have a great idea of what sort of thing works for your brain!
Yeahhhhh i change jobs a lot and it suckssss. But im also able to move up pretty quickly in the brief times im in these places so at least i can make okay money
I mean massive well done for managing to move up the career quickly at the places you're at - sounds like you're killing it!!
I am an outlier and should know be counted in these statistics.
Totally fair, trends don't apply to everyone and I'm glad you've managed to find something that works for you!!
I definitely burn out alot 😅
Me too. For years I thought it was just a flaw of mine but getting my ADHD diagnosis last year really changed things for me
so true ! the world wasn't built for neurodivergent people
Something I believe we can work on changing though!

How to stop feeling low and fix my routine when facing harsh times.. what can work for motivation or willpower when materialistic goals dreams are not enough..
Honestly, in my opinion, as you've found motivation and willpower don't really work for us long term. My personal perspective is that we should use tools and strategies to make things executive function cheaper instead of beating ourselves up for not having enough willpower. And actually, I did a video on exactly this topic recently! It's called "Motivation Is Overrated" and you can find it on my channel. In terms of feeling low, it depends exactly on what you need. Sometimes we need to talk to a professional who can like a therapist, and sometimes it's things that we can work through on our own through building self-worth, changing our mindset and doing things that move us in a positive direction. What kind of help do you think would be most useful for you?
@@ThroughTheNoiseCoaching After a big career gap of more than 4 yrs due to family reasons I'll be ready to get on a job search now after 1 month and it's making me over anxious and worry about negative outcomes and challenges in going through it and would i be successful.. which type of thinking pattern can help..
@@ThroughTheNoiseCoaching Also how to tackle hopelessness and become hopeful even in stressful situations.. any best books on Hope and staying Optimistic ??
I would definitely take a look at Psychocybernetics by Maxwell Maltz about how our mindset can affect this. You might also be suffering from rejection sensitivite dysphoria which I've discussed on this channel too. Another book that I can think of although it has been a number of years since I read it is Chatter by Ethan Cross. Mindset is something we need to continuously work on and it's okay that it takes time to resolve it.
Too Good 💎 Could you suggest some best books and tips to read for tackling self doubt and increase self esteem when inaction in uncertainty- job search process after a big career gap of 5 yrs due to family reasons..
I've actually got a free e-book on my website for tackling self-doubt and impostor syndrome that you might want to take a look at, or otherwise I've also put a video on this topic too! (Called "ND and Feeling Self-Doubt?"). Other books that might be useful are Own Your Greatness by Lisa and Richard Orbe-Austin and Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz (based on mindset). Good luck!
@@ThroughTheNoiseCoaching Thanks a Ton 😊
Thank you for this! The other thing about tracking habits is that you end up with a second habit! You have the original habit to remember to do, and then you have to try to remember to keep a record of it!
YES! I don't need YET ANOTHER thing to executive function on!! Thanks for sharing that point and thanks for watching!
I've been not unfairly called out for not supplying enough sources so let me collate a few here below: The positive aspects of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a qualitative investigation of successful adults with ADHD (Sedgwick et al, 2018) (link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12402-018-0277-6) covers *ADHD humour* , *energy and excitement* , *diversity of thought* . The positive apsects of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a qualitative investigation of successful adults with ADHD (Sedgwick et al, 2018) (link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12402-018-0277-6) covers *hyperfocus* and *hyperfixations* ADHD Symptoms, Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO), and Firm Performance (Yu et al, 2019) (journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/1042258719892987), Entrepreneurship and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a large-scale study involving the clinical condition of ADHD (Lerner et al, 2018) (link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11187-018-0061-1) and ADHD symptoms, entrepreneurial passion, and entrepreneurial performance (Hatak et al, 2020) (link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11187-020-00397-x) cover *entrepreneurship* Social Behavior in Cooperative Groups: Students at Risk for ADHD and Their Peers (Zentall et al, 2010) (www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/00220670903567356) covers *problem solving* . And finally, ADHD and *crisis* is something that is largely anecdotal. Some sources have collected and published this information, although no studies have officially been done on this. Relevant sources include: www.additudemag.com/benefits-of-adhd-crisis/ and totallyadd.com/5-superpowers-of-adhd/
Wow, so many anecdotal comments and lack of evidential backing for these statements. Is there any point in an ADHD diagnosis if it is not a burden or detriment? If there is no deficit, there is no ADHD. There are numerous flaws with the single study that you cited, e.g., student population, low numbers, no formal diagnosis, etc. Do you really want someone with impulsivity making critical decisions in a crisis? I may as well have listened to Dr. Ned Hallowell's B.S.
Fair point for sources, will keep that in mind for future videos! I very clearly acknowledged that ADHD has difficulties, but my point was that it isn't entirely bad and has strengths too. People with ADHD have to make decisions in crises all the time, it's part of life. Seems like we have different views on ADHD and that's fine. Have a good rest of your day!
