If you have a wood stock will the vinegar mess up the finish of the wood?
@@alysonstump9670 not in my experience, but certainly test an in inconspicuous spot, and I never let the vinegar sit, I use it on a q-tip then I wipe it right up with a clean q-tip.
Your pillars that come with your bottom metal or the pillar spec by manufacturer set your correct height for proper function of the action. If your ejection port or tang height is low/high etc then you must modify the stock.
Showing us how you did each of the steps mentioned would make this a better instructional video.
Completely agree, that’s why there is a part 1 video, gives you a little more info.
Be careful out there
Hi, could you please tell me how you define the surface on which you index the action to be sure it is horizontal and aligned with the median axis of the stock ? Thank you
Generally speaking if the inlets are straight, with the way I do it using the bottom metal, the action really has no choice but to be horizontal with the stock. However, I have seen where they are not and I have a hand clamp with a level glued to it that I put on the butt of the stock. I use a good level across the forend, then place the clamp with level being sure not to move it, put a barrel clamp level on the barreled action and then just make sure it lines up after I tighten the action screws.
@capersprecision2478 than you very much for having taken the time to reply. I have to bed a rem700SA in an HS stock, I'll keep in mind your explanation and use minimal contact point between the action and the aluminium bedding and clamps to align everything. I think I'm gonna go for probed 2000 kit.
I enjoyed this video.
A nice tip to eliminate the risk of stressing the reciver, esp with heavy barrels. Before making the primary bedding, you create a support bedding in the barrel channel. Mask of two areas in the channel with tape (and release agent on barrel!) then put epoxy there, install barrel with stock screws and metals just like from factory. Let it harden. When you later do the full bedding job you can fix the system by the barrel instead of the action - you can still use the stock screws rear and its recommended to get correct rotational and longitudal centering. when the primary bedding is done, remove the supports. If the system is heavy and you DONT use the support, you will just bend the reciver from the barrel and tang/rear screw working against the front action screw.
I have had great success with modeling clay with graphite on it in the forend. Same principle, I completely agree you have to be careful about inducing stress in that rear tang. Thanks for the tip.
3/4” group
Bergara doesn’t need to be broke in.
Way to show how to do it, great video
i like your channel!
Thanks
I defy anyone to bed a rifle like a pre 64 model 70 Winchester. You're bedding the action. Nobody beds barrels anymore.
I guess I’m not tracking, I don’t bed forends under the barrel. Now on some synthetic stocks you do need to stiffen them up but you aren’t bedding the barrel. I think you might be talking about the over flow in front of the recoil lug? Most of the time I clean that up in the mill and only the action is left bedded. Sometimes I do leave the over flow depending on the application and have never seen an issue, but that’s rare.
Appreciate it.
Love your work.. Well done. Thanks for taking the time to record and show us how it is done. Appreciated. Regards Dave
Appreciate it.
Great idea to put the q-tip on the pick! A tip for you is to come back a few hours later (time will vary depending on product used, humidity etc.) and break the action screws and retighten. This way the epoxy will be set enough to be stable, but is not fully hardened yet, and if you got epoxy on the threads and not enought relief agent, you won't epoxy the bolts into the action.
18" for 300 PRC? Hope aint hunting over 500 yards
I don’t condone any shots on animals over 700 yards, however this particular customer happens to be a premier outfitter and took a brown bear at over 800 yards, 1 shot dropped it, like I said I don’t buy into 1200 yard shots with a 6.5 needmoor, but the 300 prc is a potent cartridge, now the build has to be done correctly as well ;)
@@capersprecision2478 100% its the poor man's 338 LMG. At 1200 yards you can take anything. BUT such short barrel.... kills ton of velocity and for what? IS he going to hunt elk in Hong Kong or he is a 60 pound lady that each inch of the barrel weight savings matters... :-)
WOW you ARE right: th-cam.com/video/OfCEQa_qibE/w-d-xo.html
How much velocity is a lot? I’ve been doing testing on shorter and shorter barrel lengths, I have not seen anything over a 150fps drop case in point, my 7mm RM, shoots a 180 out of a 17 1/2 inch barrel at 2850fps and puts a 3 inch group at a 1000 yards, what more do you need? So for a platform to be compact, able to add a suppressor and still only be 24conchs is huge for my clients.
And yes nothing is perfect, all we can do is stack tolerances
lol yeah, just something close, I have another video on more of the logistics of this process, anything in that 1.25 diameter
I guess I will have to order a film canister.
Haha, as ridiculous as it sounds I had literally cut hundreds of pieces of electrical relief tape with one canister, if I had a spare I’d send it to ya.
@@capersprecision2478 Great bedding BTW. I think you can only ask so much out of some stocks, and I have spent many hours of life looking for that perfect diameter of whatever circle I need, but I have not seen a 35mm canister since 2007.
I use Sno-Seal leather wax as a release agent and J B Weld. To break the action free just shoot your rifle once.👍
Hey never thought of that, not a bad idea.
Did you say east way😂
Ok got to be honest, is that a typo, or did my accent catch up to me. Lol if not and that was a honest question, then yes it’s the easiest way I’ve found with over 20 years of doing it. Not saying it’s the absolute way, just the best and fastest way to do it…for me. If you have any questions I’m happy to help. Thanks for the comment.
What are you using for vise jaw pads there?
That is fox jaw pads, modified, I milled out 2 holes in each for magnets, then epoxied rubber pads to the inside. Tilting jaw pads for parrot vise.
Headless Bedding bolts and surgical tubing.....Way easier
how would that work? I'm assuming they'd just ensure the action is sitting in place properly as a "set pin"?
Exactly....With a few paper shims around the barrel to perfectly center it in the barrel channel....Not too tight on the surgical tubing.....@@Swiftgilford
Stop talking and start doing.
Thanks buddy!!!
Love it! cant wait for you to build me a gun!
The PRC are great cartridges, all of them. Only issue are the 'clickers'. If you handload and run 'em hot, evenrually the cases will grow at the .200 line and FL sizing dies will no longer be able to size them. In my old barrel, the problem showed up in 4x fired ADG brass. The fix is to run a finishing reamer that opens up the back portion of the chamber to .535" for the 300 PRC. If you run factory ammo, you will obviously never run into this issue. Other than this, i am very happy with my 300 PRC. Got a new Bartlein CF barrel spun on and it's a tack driver. Thanks for sharing. Great build and awesome shooting!
So, I have worked with the brass you mentioned. I wouldn't buy or recommend it to any of my customers. I have seen several rifles come through my shop and that brass was the culprit. If it works for you great, but I seen to many issues arise to want to use it. FYI
@@capersprecision2478 thanks for replying. I am not averse to trying other brass. I just appreciate the fact that ADG is very consistent and requires no neck turning. I reamed my chamber by hand to open it up so using ADG brass is a non-issue for me. Thank you for your perspective.
How much would it cost to pay a gun smith to do this if I bought the barrel, bolt action and stock to install the build?
Well it depends on a few things, as rule of thumb it starts at $200 if I’m building the entire rifle. It goes up from there, depending on the fit of the stock…some are better than others and that has to be addressed, Then does it need pillars, if they aren’t installed, and if it’s a wood stock…yes it needs them. Do I have to custom mow the pillars…so on and so forth. Hope that helps a little.
@@capersprecision2478 Alright, because I wanna do a McMillin stock with a carbon bergara barrel, bergara short action and a Trigger Tech trigger
What would be the shortest barrel length you would recommend for that caliber?
Everything is a trade off, you sacrifice a little velocity for a shorter barrel which equals less weight. The big thing is making sure whatever bullet you are going to run is stable with expected velocity and twist rate. That all being said I took my 7mm Rem Mag to 17 inches, and have had no issues. If I was building one, I’d say 18 inches and the barrel needs to be actually measured for twist rate, not just relying on factory stamp.
I have a Christensen Arms Mesa LR and was thinking of rebarreling mine to a lighter barrel and a different stock as well.. this build has me thinking this exact rout... but would have to do it "Jony Cash" style.. one pice at a time lol
Yeah, I understand that, shoot me an email and we can talk, taylorcapers@hotmail.com
I was watching till you said "Hornaday"
The way I said it? Or just the brand? I know I pronounce it wrong, can’t help my Mississippi coming out. If it’s the brand I have all kinds of customers some reload some don’t. Lol
Beautiful gun. Do you have a website?
No I don’t for a lot of reasons, mainly Im as busy as I want to be. However I do have an Instagram @capersprecision
@Capers Precision I understand. I saw you were using a boyd's in one of your builds. How do those and something like a carbon fiber from Stocky's add up to the better brands? I know AG used to make the carbon fiber for Stocky's but I think they're all in house now...
@@brisket12 I use a lot a lot of Boyd’s, good stocks for the price, and yes AG composites is all in house and are turning out great products.
