Hi Kenneth (Shocka), I attended the NELFT DSN conference today and just wanted to say a massive thank you for sharing your story with us. Although I found it quite triggering (remembering my own mother’s treatment whilst an inpatient in a mental health facility and what it felt like to take her there myself and witness), I felt it was such an important story. It takes great courage to be open and honest about what it feels like to experience mental health problems and the system, especially due to the stigma it carries, and especially if you’re a man so I appreciate you. I also wanted to say (but was too shy to face2face), that I strongly felt where everyone was clapping at your accomplishments with music, book etc, I felt that your first massive achievement which deserved a huge round of applause was when you noticed and recognised that something wasn’t quite right with your mind when you were away and the moment you got home from that trip and messaged your mum for help. That was such a pivotal point and although awards and musical merit are wonderful, I felt THAT moment merited celebration. No matter what life throws at you, your value isn’t based on how many records you sell or awards you win, but how you pushed through stigma and allowed yourself to be openly vulnerable, learning to forgive and accept and advocate for your inner self which has now allowed you to grow and advocate for others also. It really touched me to hear about your relationship with your mum and I am very sorry for your loss. I understand how that feels and I hope you don’t mind me saying, the date she passed (2nd Feb) is actually my birthday. I don’t know why, but I felt it was important to tell you that 💜 Anyhoo, thanks again and I wish you all the best for the future and life.
