P.D.Q. Bach Fan Channel

เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 19 ธ.ค. 2018
P.D.Q. Bach (1807-1742 (?)) was the last and the least of Johann Sebastian Bach’s twenty-odd children, and he was certainly the oddest of the lot. His father ignored him completely, setting an example for the rest of the family, and indeed for posterity. P.D.Q. was virtually unknown during his own lifetime; in fact, the more he wrote, the more unknown he became. And perhaps that’s where he would have stayed had it not been for the zealous efforts of Professor Peter Schickele, who has found at least 100 manuscripts by this “pimple on the face of music” since 1954.

Peter Schickele plays P.D.Q. Bach: Concerto for Piano vs. Orchestra (S. 88) (Read Desc.)
This video is a reupload, since the original channel was deleted. Fortunately, I was able to save the video before it was deleted, and since I feel that the Concerto for Piano Vs. Orchestra relies a great deal on visual humour, I just had to reupload it. Hopefully, the original creator won't mind. This comes from an Evening at Pops concert recorded on May 28 (or 29),1974.

The worst performance of Peter and the Wolf I've ever heard
มุมมอง 7504 หลายเดือนก่อน
Jorge Mester conducting the Juilliard Chamber Orchestra. Narrated by Albert Fine and Leon Kuntz Okay, so maybe the title will cause controversy in the comments, but I genuinely think this is the worst performance of Peter and the Wolf I’ve ever heard. The production feels scattered and rushed, the narration is incoherent at times, and the performance isn’t really that incredible, musically spea...

P.D.Q. Bach: Music You Can't Get Out of Your Head
That football stadium looks suspiciously like the Fargo Central High School stadium of long ago. Are there any Midgets that agree?
I used to listen to the LP record of the soundtrack to "Silent Running" every night back in the late 1970's-early 1980's. I would listen to an entire side (preferably the side that has "Tending to Huey", my favorite track from the album, side 2 I believe, the record is in a box in the closet now so I can't double check it) all night long to help me sleep, since my record player was capable of replaying the record every time it got to the end. It was literally the only way I could sleep during high school due to severe anxiety. I still put a youtube song playlist from that film on at night occasionally when I have trouble sleeping!
SO Great. The Boom-Chings at the beginning were just prophetic (as if the music to Pop Goes the Weasel weren't enough). RIP Professor Schickele, and thanks to my great old friend Craig Bourdon for the introduction in 1973.
I love this record.
There is a video of a later performance of New Horizons in Musical Appreciation in youtube, with some changes, such as inatant replay.
"...yet it is not until the exasperated woodwinds threaten to employ the most extreme forms of physical coercion that the soporific brasses grudgingly play the last chord." These notes were written before the piece, or at least before the ending. At the end, the brass finally get in on the woodwinds' melody, and the *woodwinds* play that last chord.
Inputting this score into Sibelius with this level of accuracy sounds like it was a monumental task, a labor of love and a show of respect. Kudos.
"And it's surprising how well P.D.Q. Bach wrote for the tuba, considering that it hadn't even been invented during his lifetime." I wonder if he considered a melodic pairing of harmonica and calliope. . . . I guess now, we'll never know.

Well done. Good boy.
A piano Concerto that requires a flashpot for performance. Delightful :-)
Nice, clear copy. Great.
I got to see a performance of this piece live. So fun to see the stool blown up at the finale.
Spoiler Alert!
I saw "An Hysteric Return" the second PDQ concert. Never laughed so hard in my life!
Beside Victor Borge and Spike Jones who is out there.
Don’t miss the Schikele Mix. A great series …

Once he came in on a wheelchair and did a flip- flop onto the stage.
PDQ. A comic genius. We miss him. I saw him live in Carnegie Hall. Once he came down on a rope from the balcony.
Ennio Morricone is one my favorites. I turn down to low level and my dog comes inside, jumps on sofa, nuzzles on lap. Morricone / Pavlov. Joy to all!
I can only wonder what the Vatican archives have on pdq Bach...
Some commenters list a few of the 'influences' shall we say, in this piece but missed out on Bach, Charpentier, Jesse Crawford, Jerome Moross and the infamous 'onezy, twozy, threezy, fourzy' violin exercise that Jack Benny used to inflict on his violin teacher, Mel Blanc.
I wouldn't have expected it to be that in tune . . . .

I love his voice. Its soothing.
Thanks so much! I loved this show and I wish he had made more of them!
Schickele generously shared his great love and knowledge in a most personal way: through humor. 😂 On tour in Baltimore in the early 1980’s, he let me try his left-handed sewer flute ( considerately removing the heavy faucet on the foot joint)! He’s missed but still very much present for those of us who love and admire him. 💖
What a treat-leave it to PDQ! I'm an oboist and can't wait to have some fun with a pianist friend. I'll ask him to play the Bach, then I'll throw in the other stuff. I can't wait to see the expression on his face! 😆

@@pdqbachfan Oh, that's good to know. I've added this video to my "New music for early instruments" TH-cam playlist.
Somewhere, Spike Jones, Peter Schickele, Jo Stafford, Paul Weston and Kinky Friedman are sharing drinks, cigars and laughs while basking in the reflection of the enjoyment we all have experienced due to their talent and hard work. We won't see their likes again for a long time, if ever. New scores and performances like this show the spirit is still alive. Bravo!
Um... you know that that's not the Hindenburg in the picture, right? The Hindenburg wasn't a US Navy ship. That's either the Akron or the Macon - ZRS 4 and 5 respectively.
What does this have to do with pdq??
It comes from the first ever humorous concert at Juilliard. It also featured the Quodlibet as well as an early version of the Concerto for Horn and Hardart.
Is there a picture or chart of what notes are produced by what means? I would really like to turn the hardart into a SFZ virtual instrument.
"S. 1"?
Yes. “S. 1”.
Schickele was so brilliant. Pastiche on this level is not easy.
To be able to create jokes and mischief with an art that has no spoken expression to explain the humour it must be by someone who has total mastery of the art form. Cheers from Downunder🇦🇺🎹👍
Another 1 I wasn't familiar with
Julliard? I thought they were supposed to be accredited!
The narration is one of those instances of people thinking they are being frightfully clever but are actually incredibly annoying. Best wishes from Vermont 🍁
I listened to PDQ Bach when I was a teenager. I am now 71 and still listening~!
Ah yes, another beautiful quodlibet
To think I was just engrossing myself in Copland's Rodeo this past week and this is uploaded. Couldn't be better timed!
WTH Schickele! also, I think this smile might need to be surgically removed from my face if I want to express any other emotion tonight...
