84. Vanessa Lau: I Built A 7 Figure Business Then Burned It All Down...Here's Why
Spiralers, get ready for one of the BEST conversations we've been lucky to host in our studio with THE Vanessa Lau! You might recognize her from her popular TH-cam channel and social media platforms for previously sharing viral IG content creation tips to over 800k people! She was the pinnacle of a young successful entrepreneur having been a barista in 2018 before finally posting her first TH-cam video, which quickly grew to almost a million followers and took her from 0 to 7 million in just a few short years.
"Vanessa Lau is an online entrepreneur, social media educator, and content marketing expert. She is one of the youngest entrepreneurs to have had such an impact on social media that millions of people know her. She teaches new entrepreneurs how to build their influence and scale their businesses using the power of social media."
Before last year, that's how Vanessa identified herself. It was the persona she showed the world and hid behind to continue building her brand her business. But in 2023, Vanessa shut down the business, went dark on social media and had no idea when or if she would ever return. Both Sam and Gina, along with her growing audience of hundreds of thousands of people, wondered with wild curiosity what had happened!? Where did she go and is she coming back?!
Spiralers, she is BACK and today she puts all of the rumors to rest and shares her story - an incredible story of healing and self trust.
Since her return, she has completely shifted her entire business model and perspectives on social media. Now, she's here to share how to feel good, live more, and earn enough.
This conversation shows a very honest, authentic Vanessa as she vulnerably shares her journey of placing her worth in work to ultimately burning out and having to heal from within. From her unexpected sabbatical, she gained life lessons that now feels called to share with her online community in a whole new way and we can't wait to hear what you think of this conversation.
Highlights:
-Why Vanessa LEFT social media and her business at her peak (and why she CAME BACK!)
-The pressures of social media fame + How it impacts sustainability and business
-How tasting "success" can lead to a disconnect between personal values & business goals
-People-pleasing can create unsustainable business practices
-Becoming aware of how ego can drive entrepreneurs to create unsustainable business models (and how to lead in business instead!)
-Soft girl era vs. Girl boss era (Hint: BOTH are flawed!)
-The transition from living for perfectionism and instead living from authenticity

Are you actually lazy or just really tired? What's the difference? We get this question A LOT from our coaching clients so we wanted to dedicate an entire episode to the careful discernment between rest and avoidance. As our clients are often coming off of the adrenaline-powered hustle and fear-driven pursuit of "success," they find themselves VERY tired. Listen to this episode on Apple and Spo...

It's hard to find the words to describe how refreshing and relatable this convo was... seeing Asian women talking about this stuff and learning (and helping others) be their real, authentic selves, I mean... FEW THINGS are more beautiful than that!! Thank you ladies for this amazing, HONEST conversation. Also the HUGS 🥹 I could also relate to SO much of it in my own journey of un-hustling, having to face "who I really am" apart from my achievements/reputation, and through the discomfort finally learning to embrace the REAL me underneath ALL the layers I had learned to hide and perform under... from yeaaaars of invisible conditioning. And now doing my best to help others with, too 💗 Also @Vanessa if you ever see this, just want you to know that even before your sabbatical, you were always already one of the REALEST out there (at least to us) amongst all the online entrepreneurs. That's actually how I found you, was because I was looking into reviews of another online entrepreneur's stuff, and I kept seeing a trend of people recommending you instead because of how much more authentic and real you were😂 And yes, I liked your stuff before, but now I LOOOVE it. And as soon as I see "Vanessa Lau has posted..." I know it's a must-watch. Excited for your ongoing journey - and THANK YOU for the ways you continue to lean into courageous vulnerability / radical transparency (which is SO rare and much-needed in this space), which continues to help us all learn and be inspired to do the same!!🤍

I’m loving this emergence of realness in the entrepreneurial space. Especially as women…we aren’t built to run our bodies and businesses like men! I have a very similar story to Vanessa & I called it quits for a year to heal my body, build a self esteem that isn’t tied to achievement & learn how to conduct business with a more feminine, intuitive & aligned approach. It feels good to be heard & validated by women at the top. I always felt something “off” by the Hormozi’s, Iman Ghadzi’s and Gary Vee’s of the industry. It’s not real. And they sell you a dream that makes you THINK it’s what you want, when it really isn’t.

This comment is proof that our journeys weren't for nothing!!! To learn how to move more intuitively and aligned in life is truly such a reward after years of going against our nature. Here's to doing it cyclically, in alignment and with trust <3
