Chris - Great video. I noticed a technique you were using that I've seen on other rotary wing videos of pilots; positioning your left little finger off off of the collective and onto a stationary object. I've had hours as a left seater on an aStar350 running video equipment and noticed my pilot doing same. Said helps in fine control movements.
@@dfmcintyre129 thanks for your comment! Indeed it gives me some reference for the fine movements. 🤗
Hello from KSEA! I know nothing about sling-wing, 767 driver and Baron owner. S50 is our home airport. It is interesting to see how you fly your choppers as a 2 man crew. Sub'd to see more!

Is that instrument descent via a published procedure? Long question short: How do you guarantee separation from Things That Might Stick Out Of The Water, like larger vessels or other floating structures? Normally there are build restrictions on vertical development in proximity to airport-based instrument procedures. Must you consult something like AIS prior? Are there any maritime mandatory position reporting areas in relation to these platforms?
@@in4merATP thanks a lot for your very good question! Indeed. We fly a procedure called a “airborne radar approach “ this is a specific procedure for offshore operations to offshore destinations. This is based on our on board weather radar. We identify obstacles and make our approach path into wind. If we do have obstacle returns before our destination or in the missed approach path, we are not able to continue our approach to the minima. We perform this over sea. However we are ourselves responsible for object clearance and other traffic clearance. Our minima is 0,75nm and 50ft above heli deck height. (Or 100 at night) even though I do this for over 15 years… it’s still scary shit 😬😑
Is that NAS sweatting ?
Yep!! it is 😆
I did some research and it's quite interesting how an IFR Helicopter license/training is vastly rarer than it is in fixed-wing flying and more expensive and challenging. It's a shame because like to my logic it would make sense to get an IFR Rating for heli as well even as a private pilot i mean you don't lose anything by having further qualifications if anything it gives you more flexibility and edge that you could use.
@@techno_viking2609 thanks for your message! Fully agree…. It’s a strange thing… but we kind of a strange breed 😬.
@@helichrisPA28 I recently modified my flight-sim setup, and took out the spring from my joystick, now it's free-floating, for heli flights even tho we barely have any notable helicopter addons, without the spring fighting me, it's day and night, I can make such delicate movements, altho I don't really understand why I can't hover just meters away from the ground, I apply collective, rudder, cyclic, I lift off, hover in one place and then fall back to the ground as if the lift sudden gets reduced, is that because of rotor wash?
@@techno_viking2609 hmm nah that sounds like a sim thing. In the real helicopter that does not happen… close to the ground the lift is actually more. Due to the “ground effect” so you should be able to stay in the hover
Can a HUD be helpful during night operations?

another great video. its that time of year again for night time landings/take offs and this has given me a whole new perspective of it and the lack of visible horizon. One I thing I found as heli deck crew during night landing was how conscious I became of the rotor blades and the reflection from the helicopter deck lights.
