12 Valve Cummins Swap into my 1978 Ford
In this video, I dive into the exciting challenge of swapping a 12V Cummins engine into my body swapped 1978 F250. Follow along as I navigate the process, from positioning the engine block in the bay, taking crucial measurements needed for design of our custom engine mount, CNC plasma cutting those designs out and finally, TIG welding them together.
The project faced some delays due to unexpected welding issues, primarily caused by a small leak in the TIG torch. After resolving that, the rest of the build went smoothly.

    Your comment about buying the Langmuir I kinda disagree with. Im glad I built mine from JD because i know how its built and if it breaks down I know what to do. I also like the idea I built it as money dictated, meaning one week I had extra to spend, next week I didnt. With Langmuir I had to come up with the money all at once. as far as support JD has a facebook page now with tons of support, and I was able to email them as well while building mine. Anyway nice video.

      @jeffjohnson5394 I totally understand that point of view and that's why I ended up building mine. The table is decent but I think I have to spend some time tinkering with it. I'd much rather be fabricating than tinkering. I would like to think the Langmuir is ready to rock out of the box. If I was to do it over, I'd either buy a Langmuir or build JDs table again but use extruded aluminum

      @@barnbuiltbeaters Frame swapped my 2wd f100 30+ years ago, needed a 4wd truck for hunting. On a Ford the easiest way is to frame swap. The cab alignment was ok, the bed mounting width not so much. The f250 donor had twin Dana 60’s F/R and a T18/Np205. Kept the 390 in the f100, the rest running gear was from the 78. Hunted with that truck ever since, but the body is now really rough so last year decided to make it more presentable after the 390 flat spotted the cam, currently doing a frame off. (Started as a 12v swap!) A sane man would get another body, but too much history with it. The 12v is basically stock (governor/valve springs, pump turned up, etc), frame is now a roller again, all running gear of the new version is bolted in. Next will be body work, least favorite part…but it’s only going to be a driver!

    At the 6:10 mark you are turning an allen key to raise the cantilevered X axis to level it. I think I may be doing this wrong on my JD plasma table. I loosen the 8 bolts on the carriage that rides on Y axis to adjust the X axis level. I am going to have to go back and look at some of the instructions again to see if I am doing this wrong. To be honest this is an area I have struggled with and am very much looking forward to the THC to possibly take the leveling out of the equation.

    • @barnbuiltbeaters
      @barnbuiltbeaters 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am sure you just saw they just released the THC but it is a pretty expensive option that many people probably dont need....maybe you do though. I think the budget friendly option is to build a duplicate Y axis (without the motor) which would keep everything level. The cantilever design is the worst part about the build...much more to be desired. I spent a good amount of time getting mine adjusted. If you tighten it too much, it wont roll. Go to that point and then back it off some. It will never be perfectly level, atleast not from my experience but has not affected cutting much. If you are like me, I do not need my cuts to be perfect, just close. A CNC plasma I use to speed up my fabrication process, not looking for perfection perfectly. Let me know if you need help, I am happy to try! Thanks for watching!

    Why ram frame ? Cummins ?

    • @barnbuiltbeaters
      @barnbuiltbeaters 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A few reasons actually! 1. Ram was the only truck manufacturer to offer coil springs both front and rear. I am thinking this would aid in ride quality 2. Because of the coil springs, the axles are already 4-linked (using that term as a general statement) 3. The axles are already proven to handle the torque of a diesel and that of modified Cummins. I am planning to build my engine up. Although most heavy duty trucks will. 4. Speaking of an engine, I wanted a 12V Cummins as the power plant and although a 12V was never installed in this year chassis, a 6.7 Cummins was and figured it may help with the installation process as 6.7 and 5.9 are very similar. 5. I never thought I would find this chassis (2018+ Ram 2500) that was affordable honestly. I managed to find this pretty local to me for a very reasonable price delivered. I never have fabricated like this before, and figured if I messed up shortening the wheelbase, at least I have the axles I could use or sell to make up the money I spent on the chassis. I realize some will not like it isn't on a Ford Chassis, and although that may have made it easier, I am pretty happy with how my build is turning out. Turns out a bunch of Dentside guys actually swap onto Dodge/Ram chassis, although typically 2nd gen chassis!

      @glenrock672 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@barnbuiltbeaters I put a 1/4 turn PVC valve on the drain hole with a 90 elbow pointing down. I drain the water into a 5 gallon bucket after every day of cutting. I do have to lift the pan a little bit to get some of the water out since there is a lip on the drain plumbing. Works great! I don't know what you would do if you didn't have the drain. I mean trying to dump the water without the drain would be a mess as the pan is fairly thin and weak, you have the supports in there and the X axis would be in the way when trying to lift it to drain it . . . love the drain! LOL HIGHLY recommend putting in a drain if you buy a pan without one. With that said, a bottom drain might be better than a side drain . . .

      I have the entire body mounted to the new chassis. I just sold my old chassis along with my wheels and tires as the wheels didn't clear the brakes. I'm working on a new video of a tool I developed to check wheel/tire fitment prior to ordering. So new wheels and tires soon! Keep your eye out!

    Our old metal looks nicer, and seems to have made the trip to two thousand twenty three just fine. I see that Case tractor and Toyota have committed to going with hydrogen for our fuel of choice... good for us who use fuel instead of the push for electric plus way cheaper to drive making fuel companies bring prices down. Oh yeah, we will wind up with a gps mileage tax so the government can keep getting their unfair share of taxation. No reason for fuel to be over a dollar a gallon as I remember paying under twenty cents a gallon for fuel in the sixties. It was only a nickel a gallon for diesel at the bulk plant where we fueled the logging trucks at. rigs that only got a whopping two plus miles to the gallon were just fine. No I don't want a rig that you measure feet per gallon like some race car engines. I do like clean air just as much as the next guy and making hydrogen fuel at home is not so hard to do... making a quart of water go several hundred miles to the gallon. Out of the tailpipe comes oxygen and water... cool beans hu?! I did own and drive many ford trucks from the days when it was Just a F with no extra zeros on the tag. F1 through F3 was the numbers then and around the sixties I am guessing it changed to a few zeros to make it sound better I am just guessing. New subscriber now

      Hey thanks for subscribing! A rotisserie would be awesome for welding/body work. However they take up a good chunk of room when not using.
