Mallorca 2024 Cap de Formentor
A short video I made of our day cycling the iconic route to the lighthouse at the Cap de Formentor, just outside Port de Pollenca, Spain. We rode this 45 km route with 1,000m climbing in April 2024.
Our rides in Cuba are much more relaxing than the exciting climbs and curves in Mallorca. We enjoy our Cuba winter rides as a relaxing yet active winter vacation. The base miles in Cuba set us up for great spring and summer cycling.

This walk covered about 10 km from our Hotel Sol Rio de Luna y Mares (near Paradisus Rio Oro. There is about 1.5 km along the Guardalavaca - Holguin Highway but there is a broad gravel shoulder to walk on. After that, it's mostly a dirt path wide enough for a horse buggy. Beth and I are continuing our acclimatization rides as we prepare to lead bike tours in Cuba this winter. Playa Blanca is a real Cuban beach with no all-inclusive resorts. Beer was 230 pesos or just under $1US at current exchange rates and was plen...

Best Bike for Cycling in Cuba

We have ridden many thousands of kilometres all over Cuba in the past 15 years. These are the two types we choose to ride. A hybrid bike is also a good choice. This resort is horrible the foods GARBAGE !!!! Wifi connection goes out daily, there’s black outs. The rooms look like cheap motels and the tubs are very old and run down. Some rooms the air conditioning doesn’t work. People on this resort seem very racist and prejudice !!! They serve you food in the buffet and act like the foods theirs very stingy with the portions I’ve never seen anything like this and I’ve been to 4 resorts in the last 2 years. This has been a nightmare for me and the worst 7 days of my life. DO NOT COME HERE IF YOU WANT TO ENJOY GOOD FOOD AND. The crowd is a lot older and not much fun on this resort. Worst resort I’ve been on in my life. I was here September 14th-21st 2024.

    Hi. Just found your video because I’m planning to change my 11-32 to 11-42 like you did. My question is, does the 11-42 cogs fit the road free hub without any problem or do you have to place a spacer? I’m running shimano gears. What brand of 11-42 cogs did you use? Will appreciate your response, thanks.

    • @leeorphan
      @leeorphan 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You may need a 1.85mm spacer to put an 11 speed mtb cassette on and 11-speed road hub. If when you install the mtb cassette and put the lockring on results in any play in the cassette on the hub try the spacer, they are cheap I went from Shimano Ultegra 11-32 to XT 11-42. I'm not sure about other combinations, but I do not expect it to be an issue as long as the cassette is compatible with the splines on the hub..

    Just keep in mind that Cuba has a dictatorship in place for over 60 years. All Hotels are run by the military. That money is use to oppress and silence the voices of the cuban people. There are not ambulances or fuel for them but cuba is full of new police cars. Etc.

    Hello quick question here. What kind of Resort is it? The relaxation kind? Or is it a mix of relaxation + nightclub and activities? Please do let me know , I want to bring my wife , and Im hesitating between 3 choices , we want to have fun and not just beach all day.

    • @leeorphan
      @leeorphan 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Dangerous to generalize, but overall it's a fairly sedate place. Havana or Varadero definitely have more nightclub-type options. They do have "activities" but more along the line of poolside games. If you do Varadero, I suggest staying close to the town vs. out 10 km or more on the peninsula.

Thanks so much h, Steve S.

    • @leeorphan
      @leeorphan 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are ramps in the main building which is pretty much the only common area that is not on one level. If I remember correctly, you might have to walk a bit of a loop rather than going straight up the main staircase. No elevators. Be sure to ask for a ground floor room, as the guest rooms are two stories. The beach is flat and there are no steps. Overall its a pretty accessible hotel.

      We mostly do supported bike tours in Cuba (we lead them - see www.bicyclebreeze.net). So we do not carry luggage. If I did I would take a rugged touring bike or gravel bike with any panniers. You do not need a lot of stuff to ride in Cuba.

    Now that is the way to travel around the Cuban countryside and energetic and quiet streets! My lovely lady and I are also cyclists and are heading to Varadero in March. The thought of packing up our touring bikes seems more appealing each day, as I size up routes in the area on Google Earth, however I think for this upcoming trip we may just seek out a bicycle rental company and find one - if we're lucky. Do you know if there are decent bikes to rent in Varadero, and if so - where? Will definitely look at your other videos and enjoy!

We don't mind the extra bike charge but are wondering about a couple things and thought that maybe you may know. The first is: what type of box do you pack your bike in? A cardboard one from a bike shop, or the proper harder bike box? Also: Once we arrive at the Varadero airport would the bus that takes us to our resort, be able to accommodate our bicycles? Any insight/advice is much appreciated!

    I was last in Cardenas in 2009. The building you approach at 4:15 is the train station. The abandoned building before it on the right was damaged during hurricane Wilma 2005. So the trees growing in it will be 18 years old. The water in the streets is not burst pipe. It flows from the harbour naturally around the towns streets. They know their bikes so any punctures someone will help you out.

    Why not just run a triple crankset? Are there major advantages to this setup you have as opposed to a triple? I run 52/42/30 with 11-25 but considering this as an option.

    • @leeorphan
      @leeorphan 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question. Triple is a good option, not as popular these days due to complexity, weight and dropped chains. Still I like it. For this bike and many others, the shifters do not accommodate triple gearing, so forced to go double, plus chainline constraints, and constrained to 50/30 up front, my best best option was to go 40/42 as the biggest cassette cog. Hope that helps.

      @@stephenroberts5616 I prefer to take at least two currencies as randomly certain businesses will prefer or only take one currency over others. From traveling across the island in 2023, I recommend in this order, USD, Euros, UK Pounds, and Canadian Dollars. So for you UK Pounds would be your main currency to carry in Varadero, with some Euros. It is far easier to use any of these currencies while in a tourist town like Varadero, but much less so, once you leave the tourist zone. Even in Havana, people may only accept USD or Euros. Additionally, you should carry about $20 worth of Cuban Pesos (CUP) as it can once again facilitate purchases at some places. Generally, staff at a hotel or casa will give you the best exchange rate while not trying to scam you as some people on the street might. Finally, do not bring large bills as people will have a hard time giving you change or exchanging them. Bring 5s, 10s and 20s only. Final Final tip, only USD come in 1s. These are excellent for tipping. Otherwise, use 100 CUP bills (or multiples of them) for tipping after exchanging for CUP.

      Don't travel to Cuba. All money there left is used to finance the repression. Cuba is a dictatorship, the tourist enjoys the privilege denied to the cubans without freedom and rights.
