The Value Chain Alliance for LIvestock Upgrading and Empowerment (VALUE) is a European Union Funded project under the Zimbabwe Agricultural Growth Programme focusing on the Pork and Goat value chains. The project being is implemented by ActionAid as the Lead organisation together with Mercy Corps and COSV. The project has four private sector integrators namely Braford Farm, Shamiso Farm, (Pork value chain integrators) Michview Enteprises and Zvikomborero Farm (Goat value chain integrators).
Rebasing Goat Value Chain Governance through Market Innovation
For many small and medium goat producers, interacting with the end consumer markets is unchartered territory. Many choose to forfeit the rich pickings of the end market by selling goats via market intermediaries. “When we started this project in August 2021, our main challenge was that of water storage. We relied solely on a 1000-litre tank which we filled up using the old system of getting water from a deep well, with a small tin and a rope.” recounts Thuliswa.

The process of manually drawing water from the well, which is located some 30 metres from the pigsties was particularly burdensome given that to provide adequate water required several trips per day. The amount of time taken in this exercise meant that Joyline had to forego other household and economic chores or had to fork out money to hire labour to draw and ferry the water.

Where are you based? The project profiled over 1 000 butcheries in Harare and Bulawayo. So there are plenty of options. You will need to organise for transport and slaughter at an abattoir.
