I think the idea with corn is if you press your nail into one of the kernels and it comes out white then it's ready... if it's clear it's not ready (I think that's how it goes). They are generally a bit "pass the parcel" in regards to removing the outer leaves. I think my butternut only really started taking off in late Summer/Autumn and ended up producing far more than we could handle... so you could well still have a decent harvest there. I had birthday money spent on a ladder and then father's day money spent on Bamboo (clumping so it won't spread... I want to grow my own garden poles) and Camelia Sinensis "tea plant"... I want to try making my own tea. So using birthday money for blue pipe sounds quite reasonable to me ;) I need to see if I can track down one of those teddy bear sunflowers... I saw them on another youtubers video as well and they look lovely. The worst is when you find "half a slug" while cutting it ;)

Just pull back leaves before you break it off and as previous person said push your nail into a kernel. If a milky liquid oozes then it's ready. Also, the silks should be completely brown. Use the mesh veg bags from the supermarket to protect cobs from mice and other pests.

I brought some cabbage for a family get together and when opening it I was so nervous if there was going to be a bug in there 😅

Everything is looking great. I found with the super hot chillies they take a really long time to get fruit so i start them off in January. My carolina reapers and scotch bonnets are producing loads right now, just hope theres enough heat and sun in next few weeks to ripen.

Hi Emma, everything looks good for a first timer you are doing well. Everyone goes through the learning process. As each season passes you will learn more and more and your confidence will also grow. Perhaps if you add alot of organic matter on all your beds it will rot down over the winter adding much needed nutrients. Plus it will make your soil " softer" and easier to work with. You mentioned your parents also have a plot, I'm sure they would be very helpful. Oops too much rambling on my part.. God bless.

I was taught that you test the ripeness of sweetcorn by pressing your thumbnail into a kernel and a whiteish liquid should come out. Ideally you do that carefully before removing the cob from the plant so if it needs a bit longer you can wrap it back up again and leave it a bit longer.

Corn is not ready but looks like they will be great❤

Oooh, is this the episode where it changed from swearing to bleeping to then avoiding swearing? ;) My youngest's birthday was today and they chose KFC for dinner :) My wife does crochet and I asked her if she could make me a Sackboy... so I have a crocheted Sackboy sitting by my computer :) I used to think a hot pink cadillac... but now I'd be quite happy with a vehicle with a large boot space that preferably could handle rough terrain a bit (we live in a regional area and I'd like to get out and do more gold panning but I'm not keen on taking the car we have down the rough roads)... but I'm not great with cars so I generally say whatever gets me from A to B.

Given your new special powers as a committee member (ok not that new now... but you know)... do you have a bulletin board for the allotment? Given you are now also aware of your wood chip deliveries... you could list when that sort of thing is expected on a bulletin board... or if any plot holders are aware of any local people giving away useful bits and pieces for plots etc... if that makes sense? You were trying to put that netting up in a decent wind... so it's reasonable to say you were working in adverse conditions... so you did very well considering what you had to work with. Is it a sign that I've been reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to my son a lot recently given when you were saying/asking what was digging in your gardens and pooping and my mind went with "an Oompa Loompa?" ;)

I make a same day sourdough loaf, for days when I’m running low on bread. 500g bread flour 350g warm water 7g Himalayan salt 100g starter Pull and fold every 30 mins for 3 times, proof for 3 hours in the warmth and then just tip it in to a bread loaf tin. Leave to proof again (do not fridge) until rising over the edge of the tin (2-3 hours - in winter I proof everything on my seedling heat pad) In the oven 220°c for 35 mins VOILA! Makes a loaf easy to fit in a toaster too 😂 Definitely not enough surface tension in the little flat loaf. Your garden looks lovely and a nice glass greenhouse would look right at home. Good luck with making that happen. I laughed when you said the round courgette was like a pumpkin. I said exactly the same thing to myself too this week. I’m inundated with them too. Hope you get the gallbladder sorted soon 🙏🏻🙏🏻 Had no idea who the band was. I’m old 😅😂

Danny at Grow Up has I think a "first tunnels" or something like that... I noticed on Mr Dowdings last video he seems to have at least one of his from the same company.

They do organic sprays forests Emma and for mildew. Mildew is more often than not humid condition and lack of airflow. You can also use washing up liquid in water for aphids BTW. You can buy solar panel fans for your greenhouse to help with airflow and cooling it down in the heat

Loved your last few videos. I've been poorly. Growing Sremski and picked one big as a cucumber and wasn't as nice as other normal ones. We picked 3 that weighed 100g and just did a fridge pickle with them, with some garlic, onions and dill. Our last food goal with our kid is pickled stuff. They do like chilli's now. Might try them again with a cheese and branston pickle sandwich in hopes to engage them. They like salt and vinegar crisps and pickled onion monster munch, so we must be near! Homemade pickled onions as a kid was the best! I used to made them as well as spicy pickled onions but we never got through them all! Like you said, we still have pickled beetroot from last year, so we need another pickle eater in the house! You can eat baby sprouts but it is worth leaving them to get bigger for Christmas. You can harvest the lower leaves to eat like cabbage. We have kinda neglected ours as we put bird netting over them but it's on the list. Not doing so well in the garden this year. Lots of cloud, not enough rain! Most of it is from slugs and snails. Hoping to finally get the mesh on the main bed so i can cut off the bit for the sprouts! Glad your Grandad liked the blackberry jam! Was a sweet basket you made for them! If you have a roll of string you can mark if off in 1 metres with a pen and run the strings along the plot as an estimate. Not sure if @firsttunnels have a YT channel but definitely a candidate for the new plot! :o) Take care and have a great weekend!

Pin a polytunnle down with curved top rebars, get them on places like Amazon fairly cheaply.

Hi Emma, I love your dedication and enthusiasm. Just a thought, perhaps if you mulched your beds over winter and put down thick layer of compost in spring your plants might be a little happier. Looking forward to your flower beds next year.

I had an aphid problem last year, but this year I think I nailed it. I got one of those mint plants from Morrisons, repotted it, and pruned it, putting all the prunings in water to root. Pretty much all of them did, and I planted a little mint plant in the same pot as all my tomatoes and peppers.... haven't seen a single aphid.

I'd love a polytunnel, but as I grow at home, there is no chance. I'd grow tomatoes and strawberries in it and, of course, your wedding flowers and more melons and cucumbers. I love watching your vlogs as they are always upbeat. Keep on being you, Emma 😊

Organic soapy water sprayed on the plants is great for greenfly. It worked on my a honeysuckle 🤞

I wonder how many of these things you still use (if any). I bought the soil tester from Aliexpress (basically the same as Temu)... it generally sits on the shelf in the greenhouse and doesn't get used... but it's nice to know it's there. Those gloves are what a remake of Nightmare on Elm Street would be if it had a gardening theme.
