Vernon, remember St.Marys Leith primary school….? Happy days. I was telling my grandson about you recently…..he was very impressed.
That’s my great uncle
This is a find. As a kid, a friend, and myself, would spend hours in his shop when he sold toys. I remember, one time, there was a small chemistry set in his window. I set my mind on having that, because I loved the idea of chemistry. Inide, it was like an Aladdin's cave for kids; toys where packed into every nook and cranny, just like all the boxes you can see behind him. There were toys everywhere. I seem to remember things like a scooter, or a trike hanging from the ceiling, near the entrance door. I remember there was an old strong, but well used, haggard old counter which he stood behind. Behind him were stacked all sorts of toys, and to the left, on the counter, was the shilling box. A box which contained all small little knick knack's for under a shilling. When my mate and I were bored, we'd go round Arbers and spend time checking out the toys and talking with Mr Arber and taking our time to decide whether to buy something. Perhaps we'd come away after buying a spud gun, a Mr Potato Head, a cap gun, or a plastic man with a parachute, etc. He was a very patient, kind old boy. We loved it. If we weren't round Arber's, we'd be playing over the debri (where they'd knocked the houses down to rebuild), or playing in the street. How long this went on for, I can't say. It seemed like years, but it may have been only one or two. But, around the time I guess we started going to secondary school, probably around the time we were 11 or twelve, I guess we stopped going. I don't know why. Perhaps after one, last winter, we lost the habit and forgot about it. We started doing different things. I know, at the end of the sixties, they'd built three tower blocks at the bottom of my street. I remember we all still used to play in the street around that time and made more friends with kids that had moved into the flats. But then, around the beginning of the seventies, they built new maisonettes on the debri opposite our houses, where we always used to play. I have very vague memories of that time. After that, everything changed. I don't remember playing in the street, anymore. No more debri to play on and I guess puberty kicked in. Happy days. I miss the old boy.
All the best Vernon
Crap now. Used to be a great place

Brilliant this, cheers
Metal Mickey, I remember George and Charlie Leach. I lived across the road from their yard in Armagh Road and used to work for them on Saturdays when I was at school and on Tuesday and Thursday in school holidays. I also carried on with them on Saturdays after I left school. Charlie's son Roy also worked with them. I remember Baker's too, it was "Ginger" Baker then probably Brian's father. Jack Mansfield was another who lived in Armagh Road South and had a stall business but on a smaller scale than Baker or the Leach Brothers. I see a posting here from Paul Dashwood. I guess he is a son of Bill or Eddie or Gerald - we belonged to the same Angling club. And of course I remember their father Bill "Poker" Dashwood. I have a photo of Gerald taken on an angling trip.
@backup6box Just found your reply. Did you know Lawrence, I think it was George's son?
@@metalmick Sorry Mick I didn't know a Lawrence Leach. I never met any of George's family
P.S My time with George & Charlie was the 1950's until 1959. You say you were with them in the 1970's. My mother lived across from their yard until 1972 when she had to move out as the whole street was demolished. Were George and Charlie still in Armagh Road when you were with them?
I wish they would come back again

Hi Vernon, how ya doing? Remember your career well, you were one of my first boxing heroes along with John Stracey. Especially remember the Contena fight being on Sports night live, was gutted at the way it finished. Hope you're keeping safe and well.

I was one off the young people from that era i remember the house it was in perth road at the back off Stoke Newington
I was one off those people that use to go to the courts as well i am formerly Sheryl Simmons
Was at Sammys funeral last month. Ronny gave such an emotional speech, was very moving. RIP SAMMY
A gentle reminder, that the community once had the fighting spirit for competitive sport!! These days, there's too much middle class decadence, too much red wine, and a rather drastic mistake with the Mogen Clamp downstairs!!
A ture gent is Micky
Herman Edwards is my Great Grandfather
Anyone out there remember George and Charlie Leach? Their barrows were green, Brian's were blue. I used to pull the stalls out with me mates back in the 70's for the Leach's.
I lived on the Eton Manor for four years. Was associated with it for over 30. My grandad lived and worked there from the 1940s to 1972. There was a manor club in Hackney Wick too. Sir Alf Ramsey was a boys club member. Shame it's all gone now. Mind you I'm glad it's now the Olympic Park rather than a dodgy council estate.
brilliant,
Oh God ! used to live there. It hasnt changed that much. I realy missed Roman street market.
Me to I’m from malmsbury. Who are u lol ?
U have Greggs Poundland idea post office
Omg I live there
rip Brian.x
Gob bless Bryan baker
Metal Mickey, Yes I remember George & Charlie Leach their yard was opposite my house in Armagh Road. I worked for them on Saturdays while I was still at school and Tuesdays and Thursdays on school holidays. I continued on Saturdays even when I left school. At that time Bakers was owned by "Ginger" Baker who I guess was Brian's father. Another man in the business was Jack Mansfield who lived in the southern section of Armagh road. He was an ex boxer, his son John and I were at school together.
I think this is the same Pat Thomson who worked on the same building site as me in Tottenham Hale London back in 1975. He was a great boxer in the ring and one of life's gentlemen outside of the ring. Good memories of this man and I hope he is still very much to the good.
Sadly Brian passed away this morning surrounded by his family. Shine bright as a star dear Brian - you will be so missed! God bless you.
