I always loved this TPATH song, such a good tune! And, it's a great story that Tom told about how this song came to be! He thought it up while the band was learning another song that he had just written. Tom liked Swinging' better so they stoped learning that other song & started learning this song! The history of Swingin' was made that easily! There will never be another Tom Petty. He just cannot be replaced. I miss you & love you, Tom💖💘🎸🎩🌟

I heard, I think on one of the documentaries of the Heartbreakers, that Tom wrote this after the passing of his friend Carl Wilson (the angelic voice of the Beach Boys). It's hard to imagine a better tribute to a life lost here on earth. Written from the perspective of the departed soul itself, I think it was meant to be Carl singing this from beyond the veil. But nowadays it's Tom's spirit taking the lead vocal, with maybe Carl filling in the heavenly harmony that it took both Howie and Scott to achieve here.

I have never seen this performance before tonight, and I am blown away with Tom's writing, the band, the way everyone plays together . . . it's just so f'ing good. Tom's passing was a profound loss for me personally, but I also ached when contemplating that THIS band--this amazing band--would cease to exist. I feel only after his death did I begin to understand and appreciate the depth of the musical gift Tom--and The Heartbreakers--bequeathed to the world. This isn't hyperbole . . . this clip serves as ample evidence.
