Predicting the domino effect of key block failure for rock slopes
Conference paper: www.researchgate.net/publication/382328890_Predicting_the_domino_effect_of_key_block_failure_for_rock_slopes
Abstract: This paper presents a methodology to identify key blocks in highly structured rock masses. Calculating the stability of these key blocks is critical to forecasting geotechnical risk in terms of potential failure volume and runout distance. Key blocks are determined using structural mapping data from photogrammetry data acquired by drone flyovers. The Factor of Safety of key blocks is then calculated using limit equilibrium methods. Any key block with a Factor of Safety less than one is then systematically removed from the slope to determine the maximum potential volume of slope unravelling once the key block is removed. This information is then used to determine potential runout distances. Sections of slope predicted susceptible to failure (i.e. Factor of Safety less than one) can be the focus of proactive monitoring or hazard control (e.g. through the forward installment of barriers, exclusion zones, etc.).

Open Pit Slope Design Optionality - 3D Slope Stability Analysis to Assess Economic Risk vs Reward
มุมมอง 1.6Kปีที่แล้ว
3D slope stability analysis can routinely be used to assess risk for various open pit slope designs. This information can be used to assess economic risk vs reward by considering Factor of Safety, Slope Angles (and related material movement costs) and Modelled Failure Volumes. Safety aspects of slope failures are now being managed well in the mining industry with a range of monitoring instrumen...
Mine planning and risk evaluation with geotechnical engineering entering the 3D era.
มุมมอง 1.3K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Do you want better mine planning inputs and risk evaluations from your geotechnical engineers? Curious about when your geotechnical engineers on site can enter the 3D world and join your geologists, surveyors and mining engineers? (i.e. and not be reliant on consultants who take months, even years to provide an update) Well here's how, and the time is now (well 5 years ago, but now is not too l...
Interoperability between 3D Slope Stability Models and Interferometric Radar Data

Utilization of ground-based synthetic aperture radar, total station and prisms to identify and manage a slope failure hazard, and later, in conjunction with borehole inclinometer information, to understand the failure mechanism and perform back-analysis
Practical application of the Q-slope method for rock slope engineering
มุมมอง 2.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
The Q-slope method for rock slope engineering provides an empirical means of assessing the stability of excavated rock slopes in the field. Q-slope allows geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists to make potential adjustments to slope angles as rock mass conditions become apparent during the construction of reinforcement-free road or railway cuttings and in open pit mines. Through case...

Classification of natural & engineered rock slopes using UAV photogrammetry for assessing stability
มุมมอง 7953 ปีที่แล้ว
Ground failure on natural and engineered rock slopes is a geological hazard with potentially fatal consequences to the public or personnel in the mining industry. Aerial reconnaissance with the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) is rapidly becoming standard practice for geotechnical and engineering geological site investigations, enabling faster and safer data collection on slopes, which are...
Q-slope application to coal mine stability
มุมมอง 1.5K3 ปีที่แล้ว
The Q-slope classification system is used to assess the stability of excavated rock slopes and provide an indication of long-term stable, reinforcement-free slope angles. Q-slope is based on over 500 rock slope case studies from mines, road and rail cuts hosted in igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks around the world. Q-slope has successfully been applied to slopes ranging from less than ...

มุมมอง 7233 ปีที่แล้ว
This presentation summarizes the results of a parametric study that demonstrates the variability in Fac-tor of Safety that is calculated for a highly bedded open pit mine when 2D and 3D limit equilib-rium stability methods are applied. Factors of Safety are calculated for linear (Mohr-Coulomb) and non-linear (Generalized Hoek-Brown, Shear-Normal, Barton-Bandis) material models as well as differ...
Integration of Photogrammetry, 3D Slope Stability Models and Synthetic Aperture Radar
มุมมอง 1.6K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This presentation demonstrates the integration of photogrammetry (UAV and terrestrial), 3D slope stability modelling (3D FEM - finite element method) and synthetic aperture radar (ground-based). The process involves: 1. Developing a ground model (slope geometry, lithological contacts and geological structure) using ShapeMetriX UAV by 3GSM GmbH (3gsm.at) 2. Building and analysing a slope stabili...
ShapeMetriX UAV Video Guide Episode 2: Mapping & Extrapolating Structures and Exporting Wireframes
มุมมอง 2K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This video provides basic guidance on the use of 3GSM's ShapeMetrix UAV software for mapping geological structures using individual points, an area, or a line trace. Structures are extrapolated to create a disc or ellispoid and can be exported as a wireframe to other packages (e.g. Slide3/RS3) for geotechnical analysis. It considers the JMX module of the software. For more information refer to ...

Papua New Guinea (PNG) is host to several topographically, geologically and climatically different environments. The central and western provinces of the mainland (’the highlands’) are topographically elevated between 1,000 m and 4,000 m above sea level. The terrain is very rugged and the climate is cool all year round. This region is hosted by uplifted sea floor sedimentary rocks, some of whic...
3D slope stability modeling & its interoperability with interferometric radar data to improve design
มุมมอง 8024 ปีที่แล้ว
Commercial 3D limit equilibrium and 3D finite element analysis software has been available to geotechnical engineers for nearly a decade. Current 3D modelling software allows the direct importation of as-built designs to back-analyse slope stability. The same 3D modelling software allows the direct importation of deformation data recorded by slope stability radars. This interoperability between...

Hi, What file formats does the software accept. It would be a good idea to have a video that clearly shows a QUICK START, additionally, what software is incooperated in the rugged tablet. Can the geological mapping be done using the tablet independently?

Hi. İ will ask a question. How can we this type of trace.? Do we draw one line throughout the fault or do you draw triangle on fault??

    • @geckogeotechnics
      @geckogeotechnics 4 ปีที่แล้ว

You draw a line tracing the fault, and that creates your orientation (line-trace) that looks a little like a triangle in the video. The trace is 3D and can be exported into various CAD files (DXF, etc), or CSV with X, Y ,Z, Dip, DipDir.
