talking to the international space station

see what it's like to make a contact through the cross band repeater on board the international space station via ameature radio!! radio is a yaesu ftm300d, and the antenna is a homebrew 1/4 wave ground plane maid out of coat hangers. signal starts at 5:00 min mark for the impatient people lol.

the handheld wasn't enough to reach repeater from this setup. but a mobil unit was a success.
homebrew 2m wire antenna

built a 2m antenna to try and reach a linked repeater system without the antenna being outside during thunderstorm season. the handheld was not enough power but about 30w worked great from a mobil in testing video.

That was cool. I'm 35 miles from there and never new about that.

Hello, thank you very much for the great video. You are doing a very good job. Best wishes from Switzerland. Greetings Ferry, HB9FEV 🙂.
@ferrysengun1692 well hello back to you. And thank you for that. Hopefully one day I can work you over the airwaves as well. Kenny KE8VQF
I worked all of the NASA stations from #POTA 6FER in Virginia and Washington DC.
I know Greg WJ8Y, he’s a heck of a CW operator. He’s aggressive in making contacts and is really knowledgable on HF propagation. Great to see Tom learning CW, keep up the good work Tom, you’re definitely learning from one of the BEST!
Nice interview Kenny! Good job Mike!
You would have more chance to hear their signal if you leave the squelch open.
Didn't even think of that. It was my first time ever listening for the iss. Thanks for the tip!
😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮 Out of this world! (pun intended)
Nice job Kenny, that was an excellent contact great signals! Nice video.
Thanks 👍
After watching the video and speaking with Kenny about the Hex-tenna, I purchased one. What a fantastic portable antenna. Easy to deploy. The tripod is very well built and a breeze to set up. The antenna itself works very well. Dropped my noise floor quite a bit compared to the random wire that I use as a base antenna. Been receiving great signal reports also. Kenny made a cheat sheet for measuring the length which really comes in handy. I've looked at these antennas before and they were a bit high cost wise. But with the sale price for Hamvention and the added discount for putting Hex-tenna in your cart and thinking about it, Alpha Antenna sent an additional discount code that made the price quite reasonable. Would I buy another one? You betcha, they are that good. Thanks Kenny and Steve for hooking me up with a great antenna system.
Scott I'm glad you like the hextenna. I know I love mine. We will have to do a pota together one day with our 2 deployed at same time and see what we can do. Kenny KE8VQF
NVIS into Florida! Nice! De KM8YOR
Very cool man! Super impressive build sir!
Thank you. I followed some diagrams I found for the coils. Then I did my own option for the center hook up that was different from other designs I was seeing.
Great job Kenny, nice interview to keep us informed, just like we were there. 73
Thanks, I thought it came out well. I'm hoping next time to do more interviews.
Great detailed description of this home based wire antenna
Nice video Kenny, the demonstration was great and the idea is something practical. Good job! Jeff
Glad you liked it!
Great video! Any plans to do one on your field day ops?
Well I'll be honest. Between having guests and just having a blast I didn't think to film any of the actual field day ops until after the fact. But I would love to film and record more pota operation and in the field operation as well.
Have you already used this camping or is this before its maiden voyage? Been wanting to get a couple of those diesel heaters for this next winter as emergency backups, it got frigid this winter and our heat was sketchy. Wanted to get a smaller one for overlanding as well.
I've used it multiple times. Works amazing. I might redo it all one day though and put in a packout box to lock it in place for travel. This was a 5kw kit that I changed out some parts on. But this 5kw you could even set the temp like a thermostat not just control fuel flow like some of the 2kw units.make sure both sides of fresh air are piped into heated air though like your tent. If not you ride sucking exhaust into tent. Seen it happen. Very dangerous.
I need to get me one of those awnings for my jeep... bounced on your channel from the Tech Preppers video about his winter field day. Thanks for sharing...
Hey thanks for coming over. This is the large arb deluxe model. About 8'x8'. It c9mes with light built into awning. The light 8s amber or white or both. You can adjust brightness also. I looked at a few and decided the arb was best. You can then purchase the awning room separately which is also amazing. Highly recommend these 2 products.

Im on youtube!
Was that you on air saying you were running about 400 watts?
From the little bit I've had the chance to use it so far it works really well on 20m and have not got to play with 10m yet but I imagine it works just as well. Have not worked any dx with it yet but my first contacts with it were crystal clear west to the opposite side of united states and south to the gulf of Mexico. So im very happy with performance. Noise floor will depend on band conditions but refers to the static you hear. Most Radios now have a s bar from 1-9 then scale really jumps. So s3 noise floor you could hear any signals coming in stronger like s5 but not anything lower like an s2 for example. All antennas will work best at a very specific height. For most of what I will have available to use myself it's basically getting as high as possible. Hope this response helps you out though. And with my end fed random wire I have reached Brazil many times on 10m. So maybe you will catch me on the air one day 73s for now KE8VQF
Hi , thanks for video. Can you tell me something about this antenna? How it works on 10 and 20 meters? Is it good for DX ? Noisefloor ? They told that its works beter atleast 3 meters from the ground. I think this is a good antenna for sota. Unfortunately I can not buying this antenna in Brasil. Christiaan
