the divine comedy - a lady of a certain age & lyrics
มุมมอง 140K15 ปีที่แล้ว
Issu de Victory for the Comic Muse, a Lady of a Certain Age est un titre où le sens de l'écriture et de la composition de Neil Hannon se mêlent merveilleusement... sur un sujet rarement abordé. Les paroles sont incluses pour ceux dont l'anglais peut parfois être, comme le mien, hésitant ^^

Le titre repris en 2007 par Françoise Hardy et Alain Delon, présenté ici dans sa version originale de 1997 par son auteur, Jean Bart.
Terry Callier - Love Theme from Spartacus (version album)

Toujours dans Timepeace la version du Love Theme de Spartacus à partir de laquelle Zero 7 a fait un excellent remix. La version d'origine présentée ici est simplement superbe.

    Back in the day you had been part of the smart set You'd holidayed with kings, dined out with starlets From London to New York, Cap Ferrat to Capri In perfume by Chanel and clothes by Givenchy You sipped camparis with David and Peter At Noel's parties by Lake Geneva Scaling the dizzy heights of high society Armed only with a cheque-book and a family tree You chased the sun around the Cote d'Azur Until the light of youth became obscured And left you on your own and in the shade An English lady of a certain age And if a nice young man would buy you a drink You'd say with a conspiratorial wink "You wouldn't think that I was seventy" And he'd say, "no, you couldn't be!" You had to marry someone very very rich So that you might be kept in the style to which You had all of your life been accustomed to But that the socialists had taxed away from you You gave him children, a girl and a boy To keep your sanity a nanny was employed And when the time came they were sent away Well that was simply what you did in those days You chased the sun around the Cote d'Azur Until the light of youth became obscured And left you on your own and in the shade An English lady of a certain age And if a nice young man would buy you a drink You'd say with a conspiratorial wink "You wouldn't think that I was sixty three" And he'd say, "no, you couldn't be!" Your son's in stocks and bonds and lives back in Surrey Flies down once in a while and leaves in a hurry Your daughter never finished her finishing school Married a strange young man of whom you don't approve Your husband's hollow heart gave out one Christmas day He left the villa to his mistress in Marseilles And so you come here to escape your little flat Hoping someone will fill your glass and let you chat about how You chased the sun around the Cote d'Azur Until the light of youth became obscured And left you all alone and in the shade An English lady of a certain age And if a nice young man would buy you a drink You'd say with a conspiratorial wink "You wouldn't think that I was fifty three" And he'd say, "no, you couldn't be!" 2:09 - It is 'social lists' not 'socialists' meaning the financial burden of the partying, jet-setting, designer dresses, jewellery and so forth

    • @Phagocytosis
      @Phagocytosis 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you sure? In that case "taxed" makes less sense, doesn't it? I suppose it could still work either way. But I do think it's "socialists".

    • @unohoncho7727
      @unohoncho7727 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Phagocytosis - I would say less sense with 'socialist' - Britain had a Conservative government in power from 1951 to 1964 so if this is a British socialite being described here and that she is 70 by the lyrics wrote maybe 2005? She would be born be born around 1935 so she would have done her partying as described from the mid-1950s onwards so any taxes would be paid to a Conservative government not a Labour government. To overthink it some more on my part the lyrics state "You had to marry someone very very rich, so that you might be kept in the style to which, you had all of your life been accustomed to, but that the social lists had taxed away from you " so even if she got married at 30 circa 1965 this infers that her estate/wealth had been hit hard by her socialising and partying so to maintain that lifestyle she would have to marry someone rich Sorry for the long winded explanation... I enjoyed writing it though as I enjoyed your question :)

    • @Phagocytosis
      @Phagocytosis 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@unohoncho7727 Thank you, I did not expect that much of an explanation. You might well be right, although of course it's possible the song is not set at the time the lyrics were written, or she might have gotten married later, although if she has two children with the man, then probably not much later. I guess I rather like the cynicism in "the socialists had taxed away from you". It suggests that the English lady seeks the blame elsewhere. It might not even be accurate that the socialists were in power; that's just her excuse for how she lost her wealth over time. In the end, it would of course still come down to all those things that you interpret "social lists" to mean. However, per your explanation, "social lists" certainly makes sense as well. I suppose I'll remain undecided.

    • @billhicks8
      @billhicks8 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Phagocytosis It is absolutely "socialists". It's part of the humour of the song. It doesn't need to make timeline sense, nor does it matter who was in power rather than who needed (by the character) to be blamed for influencing it. That's the beauty of the song, in that it fits the flawed but tragic mindset of the character.

    • @Phagocytosis
      @Phagocytosis 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@billhicks8 I agree. In the end I realized I still didn't quite buy the "social lists" interpretation. And also, people will call just about anyone socialist or communist, and blame them for things even if socialists or communists are not in power in the slightest.

      Maintenant que vous le dites, je crois que si on écoute attentivement on entend la phrase "la vie est faite de morceaux qui ne se joignent pas", qui est extraite du film. Enfin à part ce petit détail et la mélodie qui reprend la musique du film, et le nom de mademoiselle Brown, et aussi une bonne partie des paroles, il n'y a pas tellement d'allusions au film.
