I understand this man’s presence and methods. He dealt with poor farm boys most of his career. So he knew the buttons to push. But he isn’t universal. Today he would be dealing with players that want their pay. And don’t want to be ridden like a mule. It takes more mental skill for coaches to win now. Even Saban got out because his methods wouldn’t work as effectively as 10 years ago.

Emphasizing stay within the rules of the game kinda ruins it

Why didn't he just use 100% as his example? He made it unneccesarily confusing. I know this is not what he meant, but his explanation makes it sound like if you play 75% there's a shot you'll get lucky and beat a guy who's playing 85% and maybe you'll also beat another guy who could play 85% but only plays 75%

But wait...now what if he played at 50 that day, say he had a bad hangover. Well then you could slack and play at 55 and still beat him. So see, you dont always have to give extra, some times you can give less. Thanks coach.
