Inside Vernon Family Farm's Fight For Survival
Jeremiah and Nicole Vernon can't take it anymore.
The complaints from the neighbors. The town meetings. The regulation boards. The financial burdens. The stress. The tears. The drama.
They just want to focus on what they love to do: Responsibly growing nutritious and delicious food for the thousands of customers who attend their famous agritourism events, shop in the farm store, and value local farms.
Tired of fighting these battles behind closed doors, the Vernons are ready to talk about what's really happened in the 10 years they've owned and operated the farm.
And that's why they're on the podcast today.
In today's conversation from Vernon Family Farm in Newfields, N.H., Jeremiah and Nicole Vernon join me to discuss:

• Jeremiah's love for farming (00:00)

• Jeremiah and Nicole's smelly first date (04:50)

• The Vernon Family Farm backstory (08:10)

• The financial challenges of running a farm (15:20)

• Agritourism (18:22)

• The neighbors' complaints with VFF (20:20)

• The Vernon's mental health struggles (32:58)

• The uncertain future of Vernon Family Farm (44:25)

• What's your mission? (55:07)

• BONUS: The issue with "Big Ag" (56:38)

Jeremiah and Nicole Vernon are the owners and operators of Vernon Family Farm in Newfields, N.H. In business since 2014, their farm is one of the most beloved across the entire state. Known most for their agritourism events which bring live music, delicious food, tasty beer, and a loving environment to their community, the Vernons have built a robust following thanks to the quality of their food, dedication to the little details, and a mission centered on bringing people closer together through their farm.
To help Vernon Family Farm continue the fight against their neighbors, please consider donating to their GoFundMe (www.gofundme.com/f/save-vernon-family-farm-support-local-agriculture) here. There's two sides to every story, are you going to interview a neighbor to allow them to say their peace? The Vernons conduct a very one-sided, public soapbox campaign.

    • @TroyFarkas
      @TroyFarkas วันที่ผ่านมา

      it' a valid point, thank you for raising it. I considered it. But after doing a little research on the neighbor who is leading the charge against the Vernons, I decided he wasn't somebody I felt comfortable talking to for this podcast. During the interview, I tried to raise a counterpoint or two just to give some kind of representation to that side.

      @@TroyFarkasI feel like they never directly acknowledge the issue of loud music *every* Fri and Sat (and sun?) through the season and I listened hoping to hear their perspective on it. Farm or not, we all have neighbors we need to manage our relationships with. When they say neighbors are complaining, people think of tractors and chickens when really it is 150+ people attending a full-on concert every weekend in a residential/agricultural space. I am following the case as I really cringe at what legal precedents they may end up setting, restricting other farms in the future due to their pushing boundaries.

    I was going out with a girl for months, we got along great, and everything was working out. Then my brother died, and i got a bit emotional about it. That was the first time she had ever seen me depressed about something. She said that she wanted to just be friends after that. This is why men don't open up. When we do, we are treated like we are weak, and it's usually not other men who treat us that way. It's usually a woman who we thought we could trust. When you tell men that they can open up, respectfully, I think you have no idea what you are talking about.

      @Seth_McCollum 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @cori7829 of course not. Why would I open up again when the last time it happened, I got treated that way? Most men have had this happen. It's why we have to solve our own problems and keep it to ourselves when something is wrong. I did end up seeing a therapist so I could have someone to talk to. I also have good friends to talk to if something is bothering me, but I learned that most women will leave you if you aren't strong in tough times. I know it's not all off them, but it's too risky to chance it.

      @x.Lion.x when did I say that? If someone can't handle their partner crying, they aren't ready for a relationship PERIOD. Emotional intelligence goes both ways. Clearly, some people lack it, and that's OK as long as you work your way to become more emotionally intelligent. Women who can't handle seeing men cry aren't women. They're immature girls.

    • @x.Lion.x
      @x.Lion.x 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

    • @muichuri
      @muichuri 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @x.Lion.x that's unfortunate, but instead of wallowing in the pity of our failed society, why don't we become the people we want in our lives? Everyone wants an emotionally intelligent partner, so to have an emotionally independent partner, you have to be emotionally intelligent yourself. The more we encourage this, the more our emotions will be normalised.

    Thank you to this young professor taking the time to educate people about her and her grandmother’s heritage . Most Americans who have studied any history and cultures do know about Roma, especially if you have lived overseas where Roma are more well known etc . But at the same time in our country many other people are pretty unaware of this minority group. Historically there was a separateness and mutual distrust between travelling and settled cultures because they had different perceptions of land use and were essentially outside of each others laws. Settled Roma and other groups often had to hide their identity and culture, from the crusades to the Inquisition all the way up to the Holocaust. This reinforced a separateness culture. I liked Jezmina’s explanation about survival adaptations and professions. I have heard about Roma kids being told to just say they were Italian or Jewish or Romanian rather than broach the subject of being “Gypsy” or Roma because people think the first name is just a storybook term or could have prejudices against it, and the second name is unknown to them. People respond with “what? Roman? Romanian?” Etc. I remember some good books on the subject, one was called the Hidden Americans or something along those lines. There seems to be a bit more cultural awareness and communication now. And even TV shows about Roma of course. Sad that there are always elements that will promote xenophobia and paranoia about minority groups and groups perceived as separate or that they don’t know about. The only remedy is education and communication so we can appreciate all our diverse heritage and cultures 💛Thanks again.

    The Gender pay gap is a statistically created falsehood pushed on women and young girls. Men and woman are paid the same when they work the same hours, same training, same experience and same responsibilities. When you include things like Athletes is gets weird. For example US Women's Soccer makes 20% of the revenue pool generated by the sport but US Men's Soccer makes 7% of the revenue pool generated by the sport. Women on average earn more money on OnlyFans than Men.

    I call B.S. on most of her "personal experiences," but she came in with a bias and left with the same. Please someone, explain why she fails to acknowledge her patriarchal lineage and chooses to only identify with one half of a half of her heritage. I can't imagine her father feels all that great being left out of her story. There's something hinky about that important omission. Also, why are there so many mixed heritage millenials and gen Z's, choosing to identify with only one half of their family tree, these days. I see so many racially biased "activists" on social media who magically managed to gain higher learning and degrees despite claiming to be a member of a persecuted class. Could it be something other than affirmative action at work here...say, like Daddy's hard earned money. I noted how quickly she diverted, almost apologetically, from the fact that she was raised in New Hampshire. Can't identify herself with a white middle class state, ya know, in case it minimises her Roma narrative. She was quick to insert the fact that she lived for a time in this mysterious "elsewhere" no details given, just left up to our imaginations. Was it some roma based land like India? Marrakesh? Romania? Egypt? or...just her alma mater state? Only the shadow knows. It was when she laughed at the fact that she? or her family? used italian and mexican identities to hide their roma identity that made me truly appalled. Isn't that misappropriating their identity to serve your needs? Isn't that outright deception to authority? I feel like this woman may be up-playing one side of her heritage for reasons unstated. I'm starting to wonder if she's actually contributing to the dreaded "gypsy" stereotype that she claims to want to dispel. Physician, heal thyself, and in the words of all you "virtuous" DEI race activists "do better."

    It’s misleading for gypsies to call themselves Egyptians they are not from the continent… they only passed through in their way to Europe from India

      we don’t call ourselves Egyptians- but we do use the term gypsy for us gypsies who were raised in the culture and we don’t find it racial or a racial slur. Just asked the California gypsies.

We don’t need to capitalize a word in order to be the culture that we lived for 100s of years, mainly it’s the people who are not living the culture who want to appropriate the word and talk about the racism because here in America it’s seldom that we are discriminated against
