Calling All Pencil Geeks: Three Long-Point Desktop Pencil Sharpeners
In this video I look at three long-point desktop pencil sharpeners from Uni-Mitsubishi, Carl, and Caran d'Ache. While handheld long-point sharpeners (like the M+R Castor & Pollux and KUM Masterpiece, etc.) get much of the attention, most of my own daily sharpening is done with one of these three desktop sharpeners.
Read more about these particular sharpeners on the blog here: www.gentlemanstationer.com/blog/2024/7/6/chasing-the-perfect-point-considerations-in-choosing-a-desktop-pencil-sharpener
We carry the Uni Mitsubishi Sharpener in our own shop, as well as the Caran d'Ache Sharpeners and many more: www.gentlemanstationer.com/curated-pencils?category=Pencil+Sharpeners

When I don't have the space to spread out and keep track of multiple tools, I reach for a multi pen, and it's typically one of the two discussed in this video: the Lamy 2000 Multi Pen (officially known as t...

    Thanks for reviewing a Santini pen! Could you do a long term comparison vs Stipula? Both are italian brands, and they do similar designs (faceted, piston fillers with a fixed knob). A lot of people are on the fence concerning those two brands! It would be very helpful, especially since both use a strange piston mechanism.

    With respect. that red band has actually damaged the shape your A5 notebook. Apparently, they cannot take simple measurements, keeping the contents of your notebook secure without damage to the outline of the notebook itself...my A5 notebook covers are hand made for me to my specification and the man who makes them for me is a true professional and a gentleman. This new Kaweco fountain pen with piston mechanism is a charming and coherent continuation of the Sport series. The design is an absolute success, but it has one flaw that surprises me. The dimensions of the new Kaweco are identical to those of the regular Sport model, with one exception: the section goes deeper into the cap. On the regular Sport model, it measures 3.7 cm, while on the Sport Piston, it measures 4.3 cm. For this reason, the fountain pen is 6 mm shorter. This inexplicable fact reduces writing comfort, giving the strange impression that something is wrong. That's very unfortunate...

    • @TheGentlemanStationer
      @TheGentlemanStationer 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching! I would probably expect the price to come down at some point, presumably once they can translate the piston mechanism to a resin body. That said, I don't see a scenario in which this pen could cost less than $130. (The standard AL Sport is at $90 already in the US, last I checked.) I'll note that the Art Sport started at around $160 when first released and is now at $120 or so.

    I’ve been pining for a piston-filling modern Sport for years. But now that it has belatedly arrived, I’m not overly impressed. The matte finish doesn’t look great to me. I’d have preferred a traditional piston turning knob instead of the blind cap design concealing a captive converter style filler. I don’t like Kaweco’s clips. My favorite Kaweco nibs are the B and BB. The M is the most reliable and safest to buy. And most importantly, Kaweco’s new pricing strategy seems quite out of whack to me. This new pen seems unfairly overpriced for what it offers. I felt even worse about the ridiculously overpriced ebonite Sport that I badly wanted. Need I even say the outrageous sticker price for the Sterling Sport that I still yearn to own someday? Good review! I’d take that vintage piston Sport over the new one, every day of the year. I do own a vintage Dia2. And the modern one. The Dia is the best pen Kaweco ever made.

    • @TheGentlemanStationer
      @TheGentlemanStationer 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes and No. If by "Felt Tip", you mean a fiber-tip pen as opposed to any sort of ballpoint or rollerball attachment, then yes it only has those points. That said, there are eleven possible different tips you can use with this pen. You can use Micron-style tips ranging from .1mm to 1.0mm in size, a classic felt tip (like an old Flair pen), a brush pen tip, or a chisel tip. There are also harder "writing" tips that feel more like a fineliner pen.

    Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I like hearing what people think after the fact, when we've been using them for a bit. This year had fantastic variation, I thought. There are definitely some candidates for full bottle purchases. It never winds up being the ones I think though. From 2021 my main favorites are Seize the Night and Storm, which I certainly didn't predict. I mean, Garland is RIGHT THERE. Last year, I love a few of them but haven't run out of the small bottles yet, so there we go. This year? Bah Humbug sings to my Parker Ruby soaked heart but to my astonishment I keep reaching for Walnut. It just looks very nice on the page. Solid.

    You don't consider Roter Faden a system, because they don't sell proprietary inserts? Have you even looked at their shop? If the Taschenbegleiter isn't a system, I don't know what is. There's a wide varity of calendar, notebook, planner and sketchbook booklets, in three formats, designed as inserts for the Taschenbegleiter. Strange that you would make a whole video on a product you didn't even look into.

    • @TheGentlemanStationer
      @TheGentlemanStationer 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Actually, we carry the full line of Taschenbegleiter inserts and notebooks in our shop. You certainly can use Roterfaden as a "system," but for purposes of my discussion, what I meant was that if you buy a Taschenbegleiter, you're not locked into their "system" and can use what you like as long as it's generally A4/A5/A6 sized. Apologies for any confusion.
