Dry Fly Fishing for Three Species of Trout! | Fall Fly Fishing
In this video we drove out for a day trip to beautiful Yosemite National Park. It was a bit colder than I like to fish there, but we still managed to catch a couple trout. Hopefully next year we can come back earlier in the year for some much better fishing.

Sadly, I found out that my GoPro did not save the footage after I changed the battery and started recording again. There are some surprisingly large specimens in Dry Creek, near Antelope.
I have, in fact, seen huge pikeminnow in that exact creek in downtown Roseville
Congrats on the monster pikeminnow! Did you get it on a fly?
Yessir fly all day
Genuinely curious but aren’t you supposed to kill those things ? I’ve heard they are invasive in some ecosystems
I've been told my whole life that you were supposed to kill them but I just looked it up and apparently they're not as invasive as we were all told.
They are a native species. They are invasive in the eel river but not in the American river.
@thecalfisher good to know. Thanks for the reply.
@@thecalfisher right on brother, tight lines my friend I wish you luck on your next adventure
I thought they were invasive 🤔
Only in the Eel River. They are native in the American river.
Pikeminnow deserve more love than they get.
🔥
Yessir Joey
it looks even bigger than the photo
A lil fish
Don’t know why people Think watching POV fly fishing is entertaining. A well executed fly cast Is a thing of beauty, and entertaining to watch.
@@edphillips8071 So…did you like my video or not?
Is that village green park?
Yessir
Awesome man, going up to the North Yuba soon, lol.
@@robloxlivepd4351 Tell me how it goes! Where are you thinking of going?
@@thecalfisher Probably near Downieville. I used to do the Truckee River but im pretty sure its snowing up there at the moment. Although on the North Yuba I dont know whats really hatching probably gonna do a hopper dropper with some Blue Winged Olive action. So hopefully it goes good!
@ Downieville is great if they stocked it recently, but if you want wild fish I would fish the campgrounds downstream of Downieville. Also the pools are pretty deep so I would use an indicator 5 feet down or tightline, but a BWO would work
Yeah, so I should probably have my Nymph 5 feet below my Indicator? Yeah I was also thinking fishing near the campgrounds down stream near Ramshorn. Thanks for the info about the deep pools too! I was also thinking about Steamer fishing or hopper dropper, it really depends what I see when I get down to the river... I was watching some videos and they said you probably want to steamer fish when theres no active hatch or bugs on top of the water. So we will see what I go with.
@ The best way to get lots of fish is to nymph, but streamer will get you just big fish, though not as many. I went over my rig in my north Yuba video a couple months ago
Very common in the foothills east of Sacramento as well. Didn’t know we had scorpions in Nor Cal till I found a dead one under the rug of my front porch
@@jdg9359 For sure! I found a bunch some years ago on a middle school field trip to Calavaras Caverns. I have found that they seem to like higher elevations better. While in the Napa area, we only found scorpions once we climbed into the hills where there was a significant temperature drop.
Those are sick but when were you in the sierras
I was in the Sierra foothills today. It’s like an hour from my house
Lots of nice spots to hit in that section 🎣
Yeah for sure. It’s kind of an overlooked section too.
I love Yosemite. Awesome video!
Thanks, I’m glad you liked it!
Good catches👍
Glad you enjoyed!
Hello bro🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
So colorful. Good fishing!
Thanks! How was fishing the American?
@thecalfisher maaaaan, I still haven't gone 😂 I will tho eventually
Ah, ok. Got to go before the upper part of the river closes!
@thecalfisher will do. It like slips my mind haha. Funny how I will drive 2 or 3 hours to fish but overlook fishing right here in town. How often are you out there?
@FreeFormFlyFisher I was out almost every week during the summer but I lost my phone so I can’t really go out by myself until I get a new one and the last time I went out with my dad there was a dude fishing my favorite riffle so I didn’t catch anything but he was getting a bunch of 16-20 inch steelies
Where is this location
In California
@@thecalfisher got it lol not giving the secret spot up, smart, I was just hoping it was In my part of California, I fish the Stanislaus river my self , lots of great areas off the 108hwy
@@sonnybedez7040 Sadly it is not in that area, but the Stan is a great fishery and there are some pretty unexplored spots that get no pressure and give up more and bigger fish.
What fly do you have on
I am using a size 8 rubberleg stonefly with a size 14 birds nest.
Set hook with a sweep downstream instead of a jerk straight up will help a bunch with the long line releases.
Thanks but what the camera doesn’t show is that I am setting the hook downstream, but above my head so I can get tight to the fish as fast as possible.
Nice area looks like easy access and no homeless to worry about?
No homeless on the CA side of the Truckee, though I’ve met many on the Lower American 😬
Nice video. Best fishing and camp vehicle, 3rd gen 4runner!
No truer words have ever been spoken.
radical video
I was wondering how you care for them? I know they’re skin is slightly poisonous so I leave them be whenever I find one, but it’s cool how you keep them as pets ❤
These guys are not poisonous, at least not to us. Some are, like the California newt, but we mostly cause more damage to them than they to us. They breath through their skin, so any chemicals we have on our hands can harm them. When I pick them up, I wash my hand or at least wet them so as not to hurt them. Sadly, these guys have since died. They need a TON of moisture and I couldn’t do that while on vacation away from home. Maybe if installed an automatic mister, but after keeping them for a bit I realized they don’t come out to forage ever so you wont get to see them unless you disturb them.
Nice casting! Don’t think that was a hare’s ear though, looked more like a pheasant tail.
Thanks! I think it was a hare’s ear, because I tied it :)
@@thecalfisher okie dokie
Always nice to find water near home base. Roughly what area is that….I’m in Napa area and it looks familiar?
This is not the Napa area; however, there is a very good water in that region...
Really enjoyed the video. Love that youre in Cali. I recently got into fly fishing and see you fish in cali has been makin me want to go out to a river n try my luck! Great vid! Subscribed!
Thanks a lot! Go find a river or small creek that is close to you and try and fish it as much as you can.
I'm only halfway through but nice video so far! I need to get back to that river again. You state they don't allow you to keep and eat stocked trout... i wouldn't want to anyway. Freshly stocked trout that were raised on pellets? Ewww. A fish that has had a regular diet of natural bugs tastes so much better anyway! Mmmmmm! ha ha. Personally, i only catch and cook in the high country on backpacking trips in waters that can afford the loss of a few fish here and there. When it comes to catching "stocked trout," don't box them in so much with that label. A stocked trout goes wild after time (although yeah, these may have been freshly stocked).
@@epzamora Thank you! I was saying they don’t allow you to keep the rainbows here (there are wild rainbows on this river) but other places in Cali you can keep the stockers. I just don’t tend to keep fish in general because its too much of a hassle to clean them and i want to fish instead lol
Killer video man
Thank you sir!
I enjoyed watching this one. Well done.

Awesome! I have a question for the herping-- how do you find the snakes/lizards/salamanders, like are there certain things you can do to help find more (go searching in the mornings/night?) or certain areas where you can find more or is it just a lot of hours of hiking and a lot of luck?
It’s mostly location. While here’s can be found out in the open sometimes, they are mostly going to be found under cover such as rocks, logs, boards, or trash. Some types of rocks or logs are shaped better than others for holding herbs, and once you do it enough you will recognize which ones will have more of a chance of hiding a critter. And then some days I’ll search for hours and find absolutely nothing, so there is luck involved too.
@@thecalfisher Thanks! Also how do you catch really fast things like western fence lizards?
I use a noose made out of grass or fishing line. It’s used by herpetologists all the time.
@@thecalfisher ohh ive heard about that method before for other species but not fence lizards. thats smart, ty 🙏
they used to be so easy to catch as a kid, now they just run so fast
