Leica M5: It's Pretty Good, Actually

Hi! This is a review/discussion about the Leica M5? Is it good? Is it bad? Spoiler alert... it's good, duh! (Please watch the video though, it's worth it). Instagram: @grainybrews @mattttberry #leica #leicam5 #kodak #filmphotography #fujifilm #photography #camera #review #camerareview
Maybe you got a bad copy. Sharpness is excellent. Color rendition is stunning. The “art” mode is lots of fun.
@@jackthompson8377 that’s true, it was given to me by a family friend. Who knows what kind of life it lived before it came to me. Still a very fun camera.

You are very very wrong about all the negative things you said about digicams my friend. Sure, they are horrible for professional work (depending on the job) but outside of that they are great and they always have been. I guarantee that a professional will take better pictures with a digicam than anyone with a professional camera. The problem is that people are starting to realize this and prices are skyrocketing because of it lol.
Did you watch the whole video? If it wasn't clear, I do like Digicams. I also use them in my professional work, they're a lot of fun!
@ I did and yes you did make it clear that you like them but you talked smack about them the whole time almost as if your doing those type of cameras a favor for using them lol, that’s all I’m saying. Cheers 🍻
@@whatsgood001 Noted! Thanks for the feedback.
Fire. Gonna need a part ii, where I give you a digicam that uses less vaseline on the sensor and lens to review

Love this! Had very similar feelings around gear myself. Especially recently, after picking up a micro 4/3 camera, I can appreciate how important it can be to work with kit that serves me as a photographer. Having something compact that is totally reasonable to carry around in a pocket or a bag most days has meant I've been shooting more than ever and that's what is making my photos better - not bigger sensors or faster lenses.
So true mate. I'll see you out in Melb soon for a shoot!

Love this post. I'm going through a similar journey. I have put a LOT of shots through my 35mm f1.4 and was really sticking to my guns on that. And then a week or so ago, I got the 55-200mm f3.5, and I had the most fun I've had in months. The part I liked most in your post was the fact that other people don't really know which lens you're using anyway.
@@ChrisBrogan glad you liked the video mate! It’s so true, it takes a lot of pressure of you when you realise not many people even know about cameras.
The whole point of the zoom lens is convenience - as you say it replaces the need for carrying several lenses and/or bodies. As far as special needs go (like ultra thin depth of field) well, then it is a case of choosing the specialist lens that best suits. We all suffer from GAS to a greater or lesser degree but hey, that's just half the fun as long as it doesn't get in the way of making images! As for your photos shown in the video - I'd like to see more of your work, it is good (very good). Last comment (I promise), don't ever apologise for your work either in the video commentary or the accompanying notes. You do good stuff and we are all here to see it, so ditch that nagging little insecurity and put your best foot forward - after a while your confidence will grow and be well deserved too. Nicely done, cheers!
🥲🥲🥲 thank you! Will do!
Love this video! I love my zoom lens so much - super convenient and versatile

Send it for a CLA 😮 I dropped my M6 for the M5 which is a far better camera. I find the flashing lights in the M6 display too distracting. The Leica M5 is the best Leica of all my Leica’s even better than the M2/ M A.
I worked professionally in photo labs for 15 years. And I think you got excellent with all the cameras you used. Including the cellphone. Keep it up.
Many thanks! Will do.
This may have convinced me to get the M5. Was choosing between this and the M4-2!

The M5 is the best M. I use it more than my M3 or Barnacks. Very intuitive and the viewfinder rocks. I have the 2 lug version and the way it sits on the strap it's always ready to rock. Simply the best camera ever IMO.
Great photos and documentry
Thanks!!
Really enjoyed your video thanks for sharing it. I'm going alone on the Overland in January and like you will have my Fujifilm X-Pro 2 plus plus. Your itinerary is my intended itinerary so it was great to see a video which shows many of things I've stressed over and answers many questions. Loved your approach to the photography. Regards Colin
Glad you liked it Colin! Something I don't mention in the video is to just except you'll get wet at some stage, but as long as you have dry camp clothes to wear at the end of the day, you'll be sweet. I want to do it again one day so i can tick off Mt Ossa.
Some say it's the ugly duckling. I see M3s, M4s, M6s on my town pretty often. M5? Kinda rare sight.
I love your humor :D keep posting more
Thank you! I’ve been very lazy, but I will post more soon xx
Gove it a cla and some new trim. The M5 deserves some tlc
Believe me, I’d absolutely love to. The cost of doing all that, however, is what’s holding me back. In Australia, there’s currently no official Leica technicians in operation, so it will need to be sent back to Germany. And what then? I have no camera for potentially half a year. Maybe one day…
Amazing build quality
ok, stopped totally randomly just for a comment from my actual situation of being poor, if you wanna really spend low money on a leica you get a screw mount leica LEL, ok jk aside back to the video
Fair point, they are the cheapest entry points to the Leica system… but I’d argue that they compromise on a few too many quality of life features that make the experience of shooting film accessible for the types of photography I enjoy. Totally get it though if the funds are tight though, we’ve all been there…
i have the m2 but the m5 its my dream camera
Excellent photographs come from the mind/vision of the photographer, the lens and the film. Camera bodies mean very little. An expensive Leica lens mounted on a cheap and cheerful Zorki will produce exactly the same results as if mounted on an M6. Even the inexpensive Russian lenses (e.g. Industar and Jupiter) will produce lovely photographs. Don't get bogged down with G.A.S. (gear acquisition syndrome).....
You might say that you leica dis camera? I'm so sorry.
😤
I really like your argument on how the price of film is a great determinant on how you should invest in your gear. I've read somewhere that "date the camera bodies, but marry the lens system", which is just another way of saying to better spend in glass over bodies, and the Leica M5 allows you to follow this principle. I own one, bought at a lower-than-market price from a friend who's saving to buy a car, and I've been using it with my LTM glass (specifically the 45mm f2.8 and 50mm f2 Super Rokkors, and the "Japanese Summilux" Canon 50mm f1.4, alongside the Industar-61 L/D 55mm f2.8) fitted with an LTM-M mount adapter. And honestly, this setup has served me well and has taught me the beauty of the M system - without giving in to the fad of the M system. Additionally, the M5 is not a camera that you choose to use, the M5 is a camera that chooses you to use it, and to those it chooses, it blesses them with a unique M shooting experience that's never replicated anymore: easy shutter wheel access, a center-the-needle exposure indicator, well-balanced size (allows for use of heavier lenses without upsetting the camera's center of gravity), and lower-then-usual price due to low demand. Howver should you buy or use one, know that it is the hardest M camera to be maintained: its parts are rare candies and only a few repair facilities accept to repair the body. Nonetheless, being the last camera built using the adjust-and-fit method of construction, the M5 is a sturdy body that demands to be used and loved for years to come.

:3 hello. m5 is the cheepest leica with lightmeter actually right? :3 So it is good for me. I own m4 but i consider to switch.
Hey! I would say buying an M5 just for the light meter isn't a great idea. Since making this video I've learned it's quite challenging finding people who will repair an M5 if it breaks. For example, the light meter in my M5 is kinda busted, and the rangefinder patch is also degrading. Because the M5 is such a specific design, you can only use other M5s for spare parts. For that reason, I would say it's best to either keep your M4 and just use an external light meter, or make the switch to a more recent M camera. M5s are cheap now, but I think when the parts and expertise dry up on these cameras, they will just be ticking time bombs... kinda sucks, but that's just my thoughts. It might be a different situation where you live, but in Australia it is simply too expensive and time consuming to repair this camera.
@@grainybrews oh I see... to bad ;/ It will make my decision harder now.
@@CzejenAndCodaj Always the way... good luck with your decision!
The Leica M5 is absolutely the best camera ever made. I must ask of one favor. Stop promoting this camera. As a loyal fan, I've always felt assured that there would be a hefty supply of M5s at a more reasonable price due to it's unpopularity. We have nothing but to lose with this sort of hype. I guess I'll jump on ebay and panic-shop for my fourth M5. Thanks.
Bruh your 4th M5? Share the love mate! I'm glad you like the camera though, it's brilliant.
Honestly, the M5 is the best M mount camera I’ve ever used, I love the weird vertical strap lugs and the utterly glorious light meter, and it’s just so much more ergonomically pleasing to me than an M4, or any others. Yeah sure, it’s a little heftier and a little bit awkward looking at times, but it’s worth every tradeoff honestly
The M5 has a great light meter. You know instantly if you're going in the right direction. That shutter speed dial is more practical that the regular one.
It's also the most handsome camera ever made.
👍🙂@@youngum78
yes. u convinced me. I’m going for the M5🎉
Best of luck! It's a beauty of a camera
I love the M6, it is a fantastic camera. But the M5 has always been more pleasing for me. I cant really explain it. An underdog in whatever category for me has always been more interesting.
The M5 certainly has its charms 😀
