1966 Pontiac GTO Post-Apox, scale model car, Kit bash - final.
This is the final video for the kit bashed 1966 Pontiac GTO by Revell-Monogram, in 1/25th scale and released in 1998. I wanted to do a post-apox / after the collapse type of kit bashed build based on the GTO. The GTO is one of my all time fav cars and I had this kit from a few years ago and finally had the time and all the pieces to start the build. All in all, it took around 40 hours or so to do everything, and of course that was over a couple of months.
I also go over some paint prep when using cheap acrylics on your models to further enhance your model car paint job. I also introduce the Rubber Eraser Method for buffing and working with mat paints in order to blend and burnish them to a satin type sheen. It really enhances your model paint job when you're wanting it be weathered and worn.
Correction on the paint color: It was an attempt to get to close to a Barrier Blue, not Marina Blue.
The focus of the video is not on the build, but more on the detailing and weathering. The main technique was the Hairspray Chipping method using brushes. I love this technique! Michael Rinaldi of @rs.p has really been spreading the word on the technique by using small brushes and trying to get very realistic paint chipping. I watched a bunch of his videos here on YT to learn some techniques and learned a ton from them. He also shows Oil Paint Rendering aka weathering using oil paints and I'm sold on the method! It rocks. So a lot of this video is about those techniques and how they really set this build up for success.
The premise behind the car build is it's around the mid '80s when a gradual collapse of general civilization happens. You can see the first video which highlights a lot more of what I used for the build. The gear in the top rack is by Value Gear, valuegeardetails.com/24ScaleGear.html which specializes in making different scale stowage and such for scale models. He's been producing a newer line that is for the 1/25th scale crowd and I love this stuff!
I also used Gaahleri @gaahleristudio specifically the GHAD39 airbrush and their new line of Metallic Markers for painting and finishing parts of the model. Their stuff rocks!
About the song at the end of the video that is done by me (Kevin Smith) using SUNO and I hope you enjoy the song. It's not perfect, but it comes close and I like it a lot. I wanted a song about driving through the apocalypse down a lonely deserted road that is going nowhere, trying to run from the nightmares, aka "Running from the Nightmares" is the name of the song.
Sorry it took so long to get this model done, but in my opinion, it was well worth the wait and I hope you enjoy the video.
Thanks!

1966 Pontiac GTO Post Apox, scale model, kit bash part 1.
มุมมอง 702หลายเดือนก่อน
I love kit bashing, especially when it is based in a fictional post-apocalyptic scenario. The main platform for the car is the 1966 Pontiac GTO by Revell. It's the 1998 release version that I bought several years ago and never had the time, until now to do something with it. I deliberately bought this model for a post apox build and now that's happening. This is part 1 which mainly encompasses ...

Dechroming Tech Tip! Dechroming scale model car parts.

I'm starting the prep work for my next build and need to dechrome some of the parts for it. I don't like most of the pre-chromed parts that come in the model kits, it just doesn't look right to me. I figured I would take the opportunity to do a tech tip video on how to dechrome parts. Please note that the two cleaner/degreaser products I used(show) in the video are just two that I use. Yep, I've looked at the window screen and have found a bunch of correct scale size metal mesh sheets and when the storm took down part of our pool screening, I saved some of it to also use for modeling. It's in scale for this as well.

    • @KevinsHobbyTime
      @KevinsHobbyTime 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you. I watched a ton of TH-cam videos on the subject and practiced with water first. Then mixed up my paint, and did some test painting on another old car body I had and decided to use as a paint mule. Airbrushing is a lot about having the paint thin enough to flow smoothly through the nozzle size that you are using. Then it's about how much psi you need to do what you want it to do. I used Tamiya acrylic paints for the regular paint job and it was thinned about 1 to 1 or 50% to 50% paint to Mr color leveling thinner. My nozzle is a .38 and the airbrush is the GHAD-68 by Gaaheleri and I bought it off Amazon. Psi was right around 16-18 psi. Hope this helps.

    Most builders don't post on any regular time schedule - some people are retired and have lots of time - some people like me - I still work so I post when I have time to make a video LOL I'm already subscribed to your channel so whenever you post something new subscribers are notified and its easy to check out your new vid right away. I notice you run the exhaust from the spray booth to a 5G bucket? I have never seen that before. That would be good for a mention in a video. 👍

      @KevinsHobbyTime 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, I'd like to get on to a schedule at some point, maybe for some aspects of scale modeling or other hobby info, and post builds when I can. I just do better with some kind of schedule. I learned the bucket trick from another YTuber, and at some point will talk about the booth and bench set up, I figure. Good idea, no matter what. Thanks for subscribing! I appreciate it.

    I love how you kept the tools used to what a beginner would be able to afford. Most all model builders started somewhere. And there’s no need to invest in tools that may hardly get used. Great video 👍

    • @KevinsHobbyTime
      @KevinsHobbyTime 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you. Yep, you got to start somewhere and I didn't want to overload someone new right out of the gate. A good selection of tools will help, but you can still build a model with the basics. It's about starting something new and hopefully enjoying it without getting caught up in all the tools and gear. Trust me, I'm a gear hog, but it needs to be something that solves a problem that I may encounter and some tools are good to have and will help your skills advance in what you can do.

    Thank you for sharing. Do we need a PRIMER with enamel paints? cheers.

    • @KevinsHobbyTime
      @KevinsHobbyTime 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It depends on what you are wanting to do with the model. If you have a model that is molded in a color that you don't want, then you'll want to put a base coat (primer) over the color so that you can apply the color you want the model to look. Generally, primers are used to help give the color coats a good layer for the paint to adhere to first. The primer is also good for covering/filling in small imperfections in the model body. Most of the terms that are used are from the real world auto industry and get carried over. If your model body has some scratches or surface imperfections, you can lightly sand it or add a good primer base over it to build your final color coat up from. The other reason I didn't use primer was due to the fact that the paint I was using was going on at a normal thicker coat, and not thinning it out. In essence, I knew the paint would go on thicker and level out some and thus would hide any minor imperfections on the body. The body was already really smooth and didn't have anything that I needed to correct for when using a brushed on, enamel color coat. This reminds me that it would be a good idea to make a video covering painting a model car body. There is also a lot of vids on YT from other modelers that highlight how they paint a model car body, but I will throw my 2 cents in the ring soon. Thank you for the comment and the question. I hope this answered your question.
