I'm an artist and photographer living in downtown Toronto. On this channel I'll be reviewing art supplies, talking about watercolour and other painting techniques. I have demonstrations of me painting, discussing art books, doing sketchbook tours and talking about my love for urban sketching. I'm in one of my happy places when I'm in the studio or sketching and photographing while on the go.

NYE sketching by the lake
Just a quiet little video for a quiet day. I am sick yet again. It started just before Christmas so I've been holed up and it has been grey and rainy. So when I saw the sun today I took my sketching bag and walked down to the lake to sit and sketch. It was a lovely way to end 2024.
I just got a Ulanzi phone tripod. I love how it can just clip on my bag but I've yet to find a way to angle it properly especially when I'm sketching a double page spread so forgive me. The magnet on it is also not as strong as I would like. Sometimes the phone starts to slide or just falls off.

As always, be sure to check out my website. There are a load of things for fellow artists like colour charts that I swatch on this channel available for download as a pdf. There are art book reviews and instructions on how to make your own sketchbook (with video here on TH-cam). I also have a list of art stores in different cities including my hometown of Toronto. There are lists of artists who inspire me that you can find on Instagram or TH-cam as well as others you’ll find in art history books. I also provide a list of art related podcasts and online courses. You can also see what I take when I'm urban sketching. And you can purchase handmade watercolour through my website! So much for you for all things art.

Preparing for a Holiday Artisan Market
มุมมอง 59วันที่ผ่านมา
I haven't done a market for a little bit but I noticed Reid's Distillery here in Toronto's East End was having one and the table price was very attractive (some can be hugely expensive). What with getting sick and going away in the autumn, I hadn't applied to any others. Reid's was good at getting a good mix of vendors so we weren't all selling the same thing. I made sure that I had some "stock...
Argentina and Uruguay Sketchbook Tour
มุมมอง 25721 วันที่ผ่านมา
This is the final video from my trip this fall to Buenos Aires for the Urban Sketchers Symposium. I completed a sketchbook for each week of the two weeks I was away. I was able to do a side trip to Uruguay, staying in Colonia and Montevideo for a few days before returning to BA. I've used the Hahnemuhle 100% cotton sketchbook before for another trip and I really like it. The paper is a nice tex...
Another Handmade Sketchbook tour - July Aug2024
มุมมอง 15728 วันที่ผ่านมา
Grab a cup of tea or coffee or what have you and have a sit and watch my sketchbook tour. This is another sketchbook that I've made. I did a lot of pages with gel plate prints before I even started sketching in it. I think most of the pages were Stillman and Birn Beta paper that I had large sheets of to use up. I have tended to include different papers but instead I used the gel prints as my so...
Buenos Aires and Montevideo Art Haul
มุมมอง 123หลายเดือนก่อน
This is companion video to my previous video on my tour of art stores in Buenos Aires and Montevideo while I was in South America for the Urban Sketchers Symposium. The Symposium had an art market and I made a few purchases there mostly because Rosemary and Co. brushes are difficult to get in stores in Toronto and because I was running out of pages in my sketchbook (a nice complaint to have). Art Supply Shopping in Buenos Aires and Montevideo

Make yourself a cup of tea or coffee and sit back while I show you around some art shops in Buenos Aires and Montevideo. I will be adding these shops to my web page of art shops. I was in Buenos Aires for the Urban Sketchers International Symposium in October 2024. I didn't need any supplies (except I only brought one sketchbook!) but I love mooching around art shops and especially ones in othe...

Buenos Aires Sketchbook Tour 1

This is the first of the two sketchbooks I completed on my recent trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina (Uruguay will be in the second sketchbook). Just back from an incredible trip. It was my first time in South America and I had the perfect excuse to visit - the Urban Sketchers symposium in Buenos Aires! Stonepaper Sketchbook Tour

I'm still loving these Above Ground art supply stonepaper sketchbooks. They're cheap and easy to put in a bag and coloured pencil works so well on them. Cheap and Cheerful Art Haul from Amazon and Temu etc.

Such a relaxing video...great job ...love the blue paper in your sketchbook...is it hand made...
@@lindafranklin3516 thank you! I made the sketchbook but the blue paper is Canson Mi-teintes
We love your stall! 😍 Hope you have a Merry Christmas and Feliz Navidad! 🎄❤️⛄️🎁🎉 Karina and Michael xxx
Aww thank you! Merry Christmas and Feliz Navidad to you and Michael too 😘🎄🎄🎄
Rewatch this again, lol, was wondering if youve continued to use lyra do you still like them?✍🖍📒💙🇺🇲🇨🇦
I do still use them. I have them at my studio. Oddly the Prussian blue one has gone all soft. It's the only one so I don't know why. I should use them more here but I find that I have to make myself remember to use them and then sometimes I hesitate because it is a bit difficult to layer on top so I feel like it has to be one of the last editions. Same for Neocolor, though.
Loving the mix of gel plates and drawings!
Aww thanks. Yes, I like having the challenge of working with it when I'm out sketching. I love the texture it brings
I really enjoyed this, thanks, some wonderful places there ! It's Saturday morn here in Sydney and glad that it's only up to 27° today! Looking forward to seeing your London adventure❤
Ha, yes same in Toronto in the summer. It's usually the humidity that kills you. Whenever the temp is under 30 we're happy.
Just got mine from them as well. Saved over $50.00
Oh excellent! I like to hear that.
FYI, the Windsor in Newton is designer squash, but the holbien is artit’s gouache. The difference is lightfastness.
Enjoyed video found it interesting 💙🎨🖌✍🇨🇦🇺🇲
aww thanks. I love different types of shops in other countries, like I even like hardware shops
I like finding old discontinued materials. I sometimes find treasure among discontinued items.
I love it too but then if I really like them I mourn their loss
@ 😂😂😂. I know what you mean. I heard what I can and enjoy them while they last.
Boy, I’m late to the comments 😅. Thanks for sharing your haul with us.
I got the standard one is for my bible stuff and triple one for my art stuff can’t wait to get get I carry alot of stuff with me when im doing art at my grandmas house it so peaceful there
I still love mine. It goes around the city with me and on my travels
It says it comes with a stand. Probaly in the bottom of the box.
this model didn't but that is okay since I use my wooden desk easel.
The alba marker is design to be reused. You can buy the ink, and the tips, that's why you almost loose it.
Yes it came with an extra tip so I didn't panic when I thought it fell out. It was just hiding 😂
Thanks so much for this tour. I love seeing art stores and local brands. Did you buy any of the locally-made art supplies?
Oh yes. That will be in the next video!
@ Looking forward to seeing that!
I was kind of surprised to see fluorescent art supplies so clearly visible -- do you think it's a current art trend or has it always been popular and I just didn't notice? Thanks for sharing your world (art) travels!
I think it has been on and off trend for a long time. I like to have a little bit in my arsenal because I do so much urban sketching and there are some bright colours out there that are fun to add. It really makes it look more urban.
Enjoyed video found it interesting and informative thank you for showing us your art haul.💙🎨🇺🇲🇨🇦
Nice content, thank you for sharing how you use these markers.
Thank you for sharing your supplies especially the unison pastels. Ironically, I ordered the mini green pastel set and the blue set which were scheduled to be delivered today but Canada Post went on strike today. At least now I know what the green set looks like on paper and how they swatch. I’m hoping this postal strike doesn’t last too long. Can you make a comment about how Aboveground’s acrylic paint compares to the liquids basic acrylic paint? I occasionally do some acrylic painting with a friend of mine but prefer to invest my money into watercolour painting & drawing supplies, thanks again
I know the CP strike is an issue. I was just about to order something the other day and that made me give up. Hopefully it is over soon especially with Christmas coming up. I think the Aboveground version works really well. Now I haven't done light tests on them but I feel they feel the same and are opaque enough. I really don't see a difference but then I'm not using acrylic a lot. Like you I'm more a watercolour person.
I ve got them!I ve got them!😊
Your sketchbook looks lovely and you are so prolific, it’s amazing! ❤ Hope you get better soon, take care xxx
Thank you! Can you believe I still feel sick? Gah 🤧
This is Gouache that doesn't get enough exposure and credit. This is one of my favourites next to Holbein and WN Designers Gouache.
They are my favourites for travel or being out and about. They haven't cracked and it's nearly been a year. So glad you like them too. I just wish they were available in Canada or even through Jackson's.
@@eileenreillyarts1229 I first saw them when I visited Korea. I got them for an unbelievable price. On sale for 24000 korean won which is about 17 CAD I think. I noticed that Holbein has a really good price in japan too but not that cheap about 25-30 for the 18 colour pack instead of 125 CAD
Some nice lil gifts. What is the green Roman Szmal colour again please?
It's Aquarius Green. I have colour charts for all of my Roman Szmal's on my website www.eileenreillyarts.com/artsupplycolourcharts
Hi! I'm argentinian, from Rosario, and I couldn't go because it was my daughter's 18th birthday that weekend. Because of inflation and high taxes to the imported products, we mostly can't access to the best brands, like aquarius for example, and that weekend was an unique opportunity to try art supplies that nobody sells here. Filgo is relatively new, affordable, nothing special. Plantec is really big, mostly for technical drawings, but lately they incorporated more arty products, like acrylics and mixed media paper, etc. But is a shame that one of the biggest companies, that produces their stuff nationally, were absent. Alba makes paints for student to profesional quality, even house paint. I don't know. And one last thing: neither tea nor mate have caffeine, only coffee does. Tea has teine, and mate, mateine. All three stimulants are very different in the effects. That's why I love my mate. Anyways, I hope this socialist policies are erradicated soon. I want to try aquarius watercolor at affordable prices for once
I'm so sorry you didn't make it! But congratulations to you and your daughter! In Canada we just started getting Roman Szmal products in the last couple of years. I love them and they are a lot cheaper than other European brands. You confirmed what I thought about Filgo and Plantec. I have to say I love the Filgo pencils and others have said the same. I didn't get any of the Alba paints mostly because I didn't want to carry liquids. I think I saw the brand when I was in Mexico at the beginning of the year. As to tea and mate I'm afraid I have to tell you that they do indeed have caffeine. I do drink a decaf orange pekoe black tea. And of course herbal teas do not have caffeine. Black tea and green tea do. And mate does have more caffeine than tea. I have a heart arrhythmia problem so I can also tell if that "decaf" coffee is really a regular coffee. "yerba mate contains about 80 milligrams of caffeine per cup -- almost twice the amount in black tea but less than half that of coffee, which usually contains 100 to more than 200 milligrams per cup." www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2009-mar-16-he-nutrition16-story.html#:~:text=If%20that%20is%20true%2C%20it,than%20200%20milligrams%20per%20cup. Because you are sipping it, you probably don't get the same hit of caffeine.
@eileenreillyarts1229 wow! I'm kind of ashamed that I don't know my national beverage! Apparently, mateinne doesn't exist, eventhough that is what we learn since we were kids!! Recently studies confirm what you said, that the stimulant present in mate is caffeine!
@@vaninafernandez3043 Ha! I think of all the things we were told as kids that are not true like we were told you couldn't swim for 2 hours after eating. 😅
@@eileenreillyarts1229 oh! That one is universal!!😅we are all traumatized by it!

I’m sorry to hear that you are considering leaving TH-cam, but I can understand. I myself am considering setting up my own channel, but I specifically don’t want to get noticed by the algorithm, otherwise I’ll get a lot of comments. I won’t be able to reply to them all, and I’m the sort of person who wants to engage with others online.
I've got a manageable following and I'm fine with that. That way I can reply to comments and I like having that discussion. I think you have to worry more about not being seen at all so then why do it?
@@eileenreillyarts1229 If I’m going to start a channel it’s because I want to do it. The urge compels me 😂.

Nice haul! We love your channel. ❤ I look forward to your videos
I was on the hunt for all the gelatos last year and got them all, mostly from scrapbook retailers in the US, Faber Castell USA and on eBay (reasonably priced) as well as the double scoop.
