@@Jaimeel2027 apparently there is a little retractable leg in the bottom that pops out and hooks into the floor. My husband (or daughter?) had to help me with it

That's cool you got a manual transmission Element, but why are you beating it up resting your hand on the leaver?
The Element is front wheel drive, therefore the shifter is connected to the transmission with cables. Resting your hand on the shifter in a front wheel drive car will not damage it. Even the AWD Elements have the shifter connected with cables.
Try removing a rear seat through the side door, and REMOUNTING it.. The new seat sdesign makes what was simple in the older model an absolute PITA.
