    Very interesting that high school teachers are the most important role models. I'm saddened that we are probably losing a lot of potential economics majors in the US because many economics teachers here have a background stronger in history or another field.

    These modules are great, but I'm a little confused about how they relate to the Fed Challenge. Is the idea that students start with these three modules and then tackle the Fed Challenge?

    • @christinestorrie347
      @christinestorrie347 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We adapted the assignments from our respective Fed Challenge courses. They are pared down assignments that can be applied in other macroeconomics courses.

    Do you show pictures of the policy makers to students? That would emphasize the diversity of the policy makers you've chosen.

    Great presentation! So many departments ask students to do some sort of senior project without any formal support or scaffolding. This is a wonderful model. How many students and how many faculty are involved? I'm curious how it scales. I'm also curious which of the projects students work on are done with an outside firm and which are done independently.

    Very insightful, thanks for sharing. I particularly like the larger group assignment set up as a structured role play culminating in a synthesis of two conflicting viewpoints. Did you assign individual marks for the essay and a group mark for the final synthesis of the two viewpoints, or was the final grade based solely on the final group work?

    The data on consumption of online content was interesting as well. This type of data isn't used enough IMO - there's lots of data we can extract from the VLE/LMS which can help us to better understand our students and our courses.

    • @janasadeh1562
      @janasadeh1562 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. There is a small cost to compiling this data, because it is not always presented in a manner that is useful to academics. However, you learn a lot from observing students' patterns of consumption, so I believe it is time well spent.

    Really interesting work, thanks for sharing. In terms of feelings ahead of the 22/23 academic year, I really want to take the good things that came out of the responses to the COVID-9 pandemic (e.g. benefits of flipped learning) and take these forward to the 'new normal', I hate the thought of going back to the way things were pre-covid. Currently working on a new module (essentially economics for non-economics students), and would like to use a flipped learning approach to this.

    Thanks for the presentation, very insightful. What has your experience been regarding the transition from school to Uni for UK v's international students? From personal experience, I find that the prior experience of learning/prior learning environment of some international students can be very different to that of students who have received secondary education in the UK, and so their expectations are also very different

    • @damianphelan1231
      @damianphelan1231 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Apologies for the delayed response! I would definitely agree that international students quite often have different expectations of tutorials in particular. I think that sometimes I have shocked them by directly asking them for their thoughts on a question. This can of course be tough when English is not their first language and so I find it is very important to be supportive but also not let them withdraw from discussion.

    A must watch for anyone wanting to engage students through simple kind methods, recognising that engagement is not about being engaging/entertaining.

    I am glad you are interested in this topic! Let me clarify that the impact of the treatment is 9 out of 250! We are talking about 3.6% of the exam grade.
