Barbell Hip Thruster
Welcome to our definitive guide on the Barbell Hip Thrust - widely regarded as the cornerstone of posterior chain development! This tutorial builds upon our previous Weighted Isometric Hip Thrust guide, advancing into what research and practical application have shown to be one of the most effective exercises for maximal glute development and hip extension strength.
The Hip Thrust represents the pinnacle of hip extension training, offering unparalleled glute activation and loading potential. While appearing less complex than traditional compound movements like squats or deadlifts, the hip thrust demands precise technical execution to maximise its benefits and ensure safety under heavy loads. The exercise's unique advantage lies in its ability to maintain peak tension through the full range of motion while controlling spinal loading - a combination that makes it particularly valuable for both performing, athletic and rehabilitation scenarios.
This movement isn't just about aesthetic development; it's a fundamental force producer for athletic performance. Lifting strength, sprint speed, jumping power, and athletic acceleration all benefit from the enhanced hip extension strength developed through heavy hip thrusts. For most, the improved glute strength directly transfers to lockout power in deadlifts and enhanced stability in squats. Meanwhile, for rehabilitation settings, the hip thrust offers a scalable tool for developing posterior chain strength while managing spinal load.
In this demonstration, we'll guide you through the execution of the movement. We'll provide specific cues for maintaining optimal hip position throughout the movement and getting the force through the right areas - essential knowledge for both performance enhancement and injury prevention.
Whether you're transitioning from our isometric variations or looking to refine your existing hip thrust technique, this guide provides the technical foundation necessary for safe and effective loading. Understanding the subtle nuances of this movement will unlock its full potential for strength development, athletic performance, and muscular hypertrophy.
Join us as we break down every aspect of this fundamental movement pattern. Hit play to master what many consider the king of glute exercises! Remember to subscribe for more detailed tutorials on strength development and exercise progression. Given the potential for heavy loading in this exercise, we strongly recommend working with a qualified strength coach when first incorporating this movement, particularly when advancing to challenging loads.

Air Squat

The quintessential home exercise for the quads and hip extensors (gluteus maximus & adductor magnus vertical fibres). The Air Squat is a simple pattern great for balanced distribution of work, providing you are going deep enough. Depth-wise if you can in the deeper realms of the squat then the hip extensors are dramatically biased, especially adductor magnus which is so frequently overlooked wh...

Life of Pi puppeteer on Hyper-mobility and eating disorders - Full interview
Our school had us do Chinese dragon dances and that was exhausting, this must be another level entirely
That’s a perfect description of what I was trying to imitate.
Wow! I looked him up watching Mare of Easttown as his character is so infuriating, disgusting how he treats women, and I was like what is this person like in reality? Wow! He's a great person!
Sorry wtf is this? Respectfully of course! Hahahaha sensational
Haha thanks for the message.. We're breaking down a component if the lift and highlighting ways to condition the area to create the lift effectively and more safely :)
Jack is amazing!! He comes across so lovely, a very insightful interview into the journey of making of the film
I love hearing how dedicated everyone was to the success if the project. It is so nice to work with people like that. Whether i am doing theater or just going to my boring job every day the people that are around you can make such a difference! Getting an amazing job doesn't matter if you have to do it around a bunch of people that suck/bring down morale/treat others badly etc. This recently happened to me at my job. (Got an awesome new boss!) So my mental health has improved and now i'm getting more physically active too. Having the right people around you can make all the difference, whether it's a movie or community theater production or just another boring day at the office.❤❤❤
I just saw the movie about a week ago, and I was delighted by the story of the UW rowers (I'm from Seattle!) and how much love and dedication had clearly been put into the movie by the whole group. Jack was the real standout for me, especially in that tense last quarter of the film, but they were all great!
The love is palpable when any of the bast talk about the project, so refreshing
How common is that uneven muscles causing knee pain/joint pain issue?
I am also T1 diabetic so I'm impressed by that self control that people are able to take on when they are trying to lose a significant amount of weight for a role by cutting calories. My husband doesn't get it how when my blood sugar is low & my brain is telling me to eat half the contents of the snack cupboard. It's not really something that most people can turn off.
Love your fancy chair Sam!😍 I've never heard anyone talking about nerves & remembering lines like that before. That happened to me when I had a big part in a college play. I couldn't remember my lines right before going out on stage & was like, "Well, here goes nothing, I guess." But I went out on stage and they all came out exactly when they were supposed to & didn't even really need to think about them. It's an unusual phenomenon. 😊
I wondered how actors do weight gain/loss for a movie in a healthy way. Some do it frequently. Doesn't always seem safe. Impressive commitment to your roll in TBITB Jack!
He did an unbelievable job. The dedication and commitment to the craft was truly incredible. I think he's proud of how it turned out
I'm so happy for jack mulhern content thank youuu! Super interesting and funny video!
You're so welcome. We're so glad you enjoyed it
The good old Jane Fonda's an classic but when cued well, is a game changer for the region
A jump forward from the single leg lowers that in the playlist, but a great pattern to know. Needs respect though
Nice, the back position cue is very helpful to keeping the stress in the abs and not the back
Good way to progress the air squat
Classic, good cues
Such an effective exercise for wanting to strengthen their adductors and reduce injury risk
Feels like a good place to start when I’m getting back into training my hips
Really can be, we'll pop some more variations on here that can be used as regressions or progression soon :)
Tried these cues and it really adds to the burn
Hey... Glad you found them useful. It's those little tweaks that make all the difference right? :)
Where can I get those bands?
You can get them from the shop on our website productionphysiotherapy.com
what department do you work in?
As someone that works in theatre this was so unexpected but I’m so glad it appeared on my feed
Hey, hope it was useful
