Amparo's Story (English)

Despite all her efforts to foster her three-year-old daughter’s early development, Amparo found herself at a loss as her child continued to struggle to learn and be independent. When she found a parent-child education program through United Way, she witnessed a transformation in her daughter’s cognitive, social and emotional development. Today, her daughter is succeeding in her career, is a college graduate and most of all, Amparo has the peace of mind that she provided quality early learning for her children.

When he was very young, his mother was doing everything she could to support her family but just could never seem to make ends meet. Once she found support from United Way, Av Ron and his family received the assistance they needed to succeed then and thrive in their personal lives today.

Bryana's Story

Pregnant at 14 years old and struggling with her disability, Bryana was not going to school. She struggled to find a high school that could provide a daycare for her daughter and assistance with her disability until she found support through United Way. With this assistance, Bryana graduated a year early and her family has a brighter future ahead of them.

Six years ago, Thomas retired only to discover that his mother had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Fraught with anxiety and fear for what was to come, Thomas found United Way programs that help caregivers and their loved ones. Now, Thomas’s mother and his family have a better quality of life, allowing them to make the most of the time they have left with her.

In 2022, United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County partnered with Learning Tree Academy to raise the wages of all staff to $15-18 an hour. For a year, United Way studied the impact of the wage increase on staff well-being and child care quality. United Way continues studying the relationship between wages and child care quality.
