I've flown 411s and 421s both for several years. Half of my 20,000 hours are in those planes, mostly flying charter. If I'm behind a pair of GTSIO-520s and some idiot reaches for a mixture control, the least I'm going to do is yell at him. The idea of shutting down a hot, perfectly good GITSO gives me nightmares. There is a range of RPM setting that duplicates an engine out condition, and doesn't supercool the engine. It should be in your POH. It is in mine.

Pulling mixture is such a dumb idea it's not even funny.

These engines are designed to be shut down and feathered…otherwise they could not get FAA certification. The difference between “zero thrust” and a feathered engine, in drag alone, is HUGE. The airplane flys much better with one shut down and feathered than it does at the mystical zero thrust. Properly done, shutting one down is just no big deal. If you don’t practice it now and then, and land with it shut down and feathered, you are just kidding yourself about your proficiency…thus entering the realm of an accident looking for a place to happen.

I'm not sure exactly what this last 12 minutes was all about. Let me make a couple of recommendations for you for a better TH-cam video. 1. Audio. The constant droning of the engines is mind numbing. I have no idea what the pilot or, I'm guessing, the instructor were saying to each other. Was this a training flight, a Biennial flight review, or something else? Check out in the aircraft? 2. What WAS the purpose of this flight? We have no clue. You shut down the engine and feathered the prop, but you didn't say why. 3. With those GTSIO-520s, and their lack of reliability, I'm not sure I would want to be shutting down and restarting engines in flight. 4. Mixture setting. After restarting the engine, how come the left mixture isn't set back to where it was before? 5. I'm assuming that this airplane doesn't have unfeathering accumulators? 6. If I was going to do this, I would prefer to be doing it in a Simcom simulator. Since your right seater wears the hat, I'm sure he could tell you about how much better it would be in the sim, and how much less damage to the aircraft. That's the way *I* would do it, anyway. While this was semi-interesting, I won't recommend it to anyone because there is really no content here. Maybe on your next video, you'll be able to do better.

I have owned several multi engines and logged over 1,000 hours in them. Every single one I have shut down and feathered an engine during my check out. Why? Because I want to see how the aircraft handles and is controlled with one engine shut down. It could happen on an instrument approach at minimums any time. If you are worried about the engine not restarting during a test shut-down in VFR conditions near the airport, you probably shouldn't be a multi pilot. I had to shut down an engine on my multi checkride, and it wouldn't restart due to a starter failure so I continued the checkride and landed single engine. Of course the video quality could be better, but I am not in the business of creating professional youtube videos. It was something I had on my computer and thought it was worth posting.

Brian Herron Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the input. Although I am no long flying, it's always been my understanding that the GTSIO-520s need to be totally babied if you want to have any hope of reaching TBO. In your case, a new purchase, I agree that shutting down an engine in flight is probably something you want to do. As to the videos, there are an awful lot of private pilots, I.e., airplane owners that record their flying and share it. We, for whatever reason, are not flying any more, finances, medical, or just starting out. This group of people just love TH-cam videos on just about anything where we get to 'ride along.' Obviously 'big names' like Flight Chops, Steveo1Knevo, Premier One Driver are a couple, I like Baron Pilot and Jerry W and Mr. Aviation 101 as well. Chops is the only "professional" video maker, but all have good, solid foundation of viewers. So, don't be adverse to sticking a couple of more cameras and wiring up some audio for them. I guarantee your viewership will climb, and you'll probably make a lot of people happy for another Aviation channel they can watch. Fly safe and an enjoy the Golden Eagle!

Gary - you seem to have the common stigma of GTSIO-520 unfamiliarity only by what you read from people who don't have any time in a 421. I can tell you this is a gentleman's plane, and it doesn't respond to jockey inputs. Nor does it warrant Keyboard pilots commenting on something they have no experience with. We moved to turbine now, but operated the 421B for years with 0 issues, including shutting it down and restarting mid air on flight reviews, in addition to SIMCOM courses in the sim.

Thanks for the helpful video! You did a goog job. Thats also my biggest problem. Living in a apartment, so no chance to play an aquistic drum. Also e drum made so much noise as like your calculeting method it is about 95 decibel. My problem can be solved if i block the ambience noise from the down stairs neighboor. I asked to a professional advisor than he advice me to use a fungi-sponge plate stuffs and a heavy barrier made of lead on it. With two layers on the floor they say it can block about 100decibels. What do you think? Have you finished the glass room all closed? I m thinking the same method, room in room, but i could not choose the best way to produce it. Your video change my ideas. Doing the best can not block all the noise? Is it right? Thanks.
