Röö guitars #004 - applying finish (neck and body)
And finally, the stage I was dreading the most. I have used spray paints, but mostly with very poor result. This is the stage that I believe makes the most difference in the first impression of the instrument, and I know absolutely nothing about it...
I chose a hand rubbed finish, because I'm nowhere near having a spray setup. I also did not want an oil finish, but something more substantial. There is no particularly beautiful grain on this guitar, so finish only needs to protect the wood. A poly finish seemed like the obvious choice.
I had to correct some poor staining job I did by sanding it partially off and reapplying the stain, using a better technique this time. I used a rug and kept it pretty dry. This helped to keep the layer very thin and to blend it in.
I applied six coats on the neck in total, with a level-sanding after the third one using 800grit sandpaper. This gave a very smooth finish. I did three coats on the body without sanding. It gave an open-pore look, but a very even and smooth finish. I'm really happy with the result.
I learnt a couple of lessons...
1. A cotton bud is not the proper tool to use on a surface that is not really sanded... It was just disintegrating. Well, a paintbrush will be used next time.
2. Do not sand the logo! Even with the 800grit I managed to sand through the finish and the silver colour. I cut off the damaged bit, and it doesn't really make a difference.
3. Use a low-tack masking tape on the fretboard... It is a horrible mess now...
All in all, I'm really happy with the process and the final effect.
Thanks for watching, we're nearly there!

Röö guitars #004 - neck part 4 (finish prep and hardware)

Another video about... SANDING!!! You're welcome, again 👍 The neck is finally ready for finish. There is no stain on the neck, only clear finish. There still will be a few things to do, like finalising the nut slot and cutting the nut. Also, the fretboard and frets will need some attention. I had to modify the gotoh tuners slightly, as my headstock doesn't have enough thickness to hold them cor...

It's finally here! The video about... SANDING!!! You're welcome 👍 Like it or not, it's a huge part of the build and it needs as much attention as any other stage. I actually enjoy sanding (being a dull man, I enjoy dull tasks, I guess), the details really start to show here. I started with hand sanding, and decided it's time for a power sander. It took care of the bulk of work and details were ...

Carving the neck using faceting method. Also shaping the heel and the headstock transitions. A fair bit of sanding done as well and rounding off fretboard edges. The faceting method: - thicknessing the neck between the 1st and 15th fret to desired thickness. Typically, for a nice C shape, this would be 21mm on the 1st and 23mm on the 15th fret. I like my necks more chunky, so I went with 22,5mm...
Röö guitars #004 - body part 2 (cavities)
มุมมอง 1.7Kหลายเดือนก่อน
I precisely measured the bridge and pickups' placement, taking into consideration screws in the pickguard. Since I will be installing two p90 pickups, the screws' layout doesn't fit in the top portion of the pickguard. The control cavity was routed fairly deep, as the blade switch I plan on using is 35mm tall. I wanted to keep the cavity consistent. Also, some weight was reduced as a bonus. Bri...

that is a nice finish. Is it satin?
Thank you. It is gloss, but because it is applied so thin, there is no way to buff it to high gloss. As it is applied, it's more of a semi-gloss now. I'm happy with it, I was dreading this step as I have no experience with finishing :/

Great video, we would like to invite you try out our featured products!
Hey, thanks. What products?
I believe the holes for the tuners should be pretty tight.
I would prefer them to be tight. I measured the tuner and it was 10mm. I used a 10mm drill bit. Next time I'll use a 9.5mm 🤷♂
what I also like to do is only do 10mm as deep as it needs to be, and the rest 8mm for the nut to go through. Next build :)

Thank you! 🤘
Yey! Another video about sanding! 👀
@@gutarnerd I know, right? Unfortunately I had to cut out 95% of the actual sanding I did. I know nothing about video production, but I know that it would be torture to watch 🤣 thanks for watching! 👍

@@rincewindtheblack6461 thanks! 🤘
Looks great man! Thanks for posting.
Thanks! How is your build coming along?
@ I cut the walnut body into the Meteora shape yesterday. I’m trying to figure out if I want to sandwich some canarywood in between the walnut body and the claro walnut topper I have. I did some resawing of canarywood top pieces to get veneers if I decide to do that. Probably will. Both the claro top and walnut body have very cool yellow streaking through them. It would match well. Just taking a break until I figure out how I want to proceed. Everything was very expensive lol. This is for my son. It has to go perfectly. Still trying to route a properly clean truss rod channel. I’ll be using a router table from now on for that. I’ll keep you posted!
@adamcone6856 sounds good 👍 I wouldn't trust myself with the router table for truss rod channel. I find the router with the defence perfect for that. Well, as long as the neck blank is actually square and straight :) are you routing out cavities in the body to reduce the weight a bit? Or do you not think it will be necessary?
@ I’ve tried using a palm router twice with a side fence and it was just too unstable. I’m going to try a piece of mahogany on the router table and mark lines out where I need to stop. It is for a heel ended truss rod, which I prefer, even though I’ve never used one. The walnut isn’t very heavy, but I may route out some extra if I do a pickguard for it. Still not sure. I’d resaw the topper if I do that, so it will still have the awesome figuring. The neck and fretboard are master grade roasted flame maple. I have to get the right truss rod technique before I touch it lol. This all seemed much easier in my head when I was watching all these different videos on TH-cam. I’ll get it eventually. Just need practice.
I must say it's very brave of you to start with this grade of wood. I would be scared sh**less to touch it at all... My first three builds were done in the presence of absolute professionals, so I had someone to ask billion questions before each step. And still I managed to mess up a few things 🤷♂️ With body weight, you need to consider all hardware you will put on it to be able to judge the weight. It will be heavier than you think. Since you are gluing the top on, I would suggest routing cavities (chambers) in the body outside of the obvious areas like pickups, bridge, anywhere near the neck pocket and control cavity. Like in a thinline tele, or similar, only with no f-holes. This will give you considerable weight reduction and will be invisible. Have a look how gibson is chambering their les paul guitars. I prefer spokewheel truss rods at the heel. With a notch cut out of the fretboard. I think that's what I'm going to do from now on.

why not using double sided tape?
@@gutarnerd thanks for asking. I learned this method in the UK, where it was very difficult to get a good quality double sided tape that would do the job correctly. Some left sticky residue, some were not strong enough, some were too thick... Since this method works fine, I just use it instead of buying and testing many different products 🤷 I'm happy with it. It may take a bit more time to set up, but it's not a race :)

@@mickd3390 we're great man, thanks. Hope you are doing well too 👍
Bro, I just finally achieved my first hand planed jointed wood face for a neck. I feel so accomplished today! Thanks for the inspiration, because you were definitely helpful. I was able to read the angle and took my #8 jointer plane to the high left point, and just rode it down to flush with each stroke. I can finally route out a truss rod channel using a side guide attachment without it walking all over the place. Life changing day lol! Your Crimson Guitars classes videos really helped to make me think differently. I’d love to share with you when I get a bit further along and have something to show.
@@adamcone6856 wow, that is great! Nice plane btw ;) please share your progress, I'd love to see how you're doing 👍
Fascinating watching the inlay work. How long did it take to hand carve those out of the fretboard? I figured they would have used routers to save time. I can appreciate doing it by hand though. I’m sure you felt incredibly accomplished once done!
Oh man, it is soooooo satisfying. It was a few hours straight, but it was the first time I've done anything like this. I like tedious tasks like this for some reason. I should have used a Dremel router for that, just like I used for the goldtop build (#002). Would have been so much quicker. But again, this wasn't about being quick, was it? :) and yes, CNC would be how it's done. You can request inlays being cut for you when you book the course
Awesome work man! I assume this is how Ben teaches his students to build? I’ve been having issues starting my first build. I appreciate you uploading your videos. I’ve subscribed and will be watching them. I have a plank of mahogany and will cut some carbon fiber and truss rod channels tomorrow. I’ve been going about everything in the wrong order, and am not getting anywhere with it. You made my day! Thanks again.
Hey! Thank you so much 🤘 At Crimson they teach to cut your neck shape before cutting the truss rod (if I remember correctly). They use templates and small cutters with bushings. I don't have either, so I cut my channels first, when the neck blanks was still square. Just easier this way I think. Hey, the most difficult step is to start. Then it should go smooth 👍 And don't get discouraged with things that may go wrong. There is always a way to recover! I'm no expert by any means, but if I can, I'm happy to help 🤘 Good luck!
Excellent job! Do you notice a significant difference between those Japanese half-round rasps and conventional half-round rasps? They're quite expensive here due to taxes!
Hey, thanks! Do you mean the iwasaki file? I find that they give much more control over the cut and can leave an excellent surface. Especially the flat one. I bought them at Crimson Guitars in England. I thought they were bigger, but they do the job 🤣

That's looking really rather special already! I love the carve on the cutaway. I spy with my little eye in the opening seconds... an Ibanez RB924 Roadstar II bass!! My first "proper" bass guitar that I borrowed off a guy that was a friend of the guitarist, on the understanding I would give it back when asked. Two weeks before my 21st birthday, the guy asked for it back and so back it went. What I didn't know was that all the guys in the band chipped in to buy it off the original owner and they presented it to me on my 21st birthday. My son has it now.
Thank you! The carve is sort of a happy accident. Not planned for, but made sense to do it that way. I'm very happy with it 👍 Yes! That's the roadstar bass there :) There's also a matching guitar kicking around somewhere there :) Fantastic instruments.
