Day Trip to Niš, Serbia 🇷🇸 Travel Vlog: Mediana Ruins, Skull Tower, and Red Cross Concentration Camp
Join me on a day trip to Niš, Serbia from Sofia, Bulgaria. The day started with crossing the Bulgarian and Serbian border and almost instantly enduring a bit of culture shock. The first stop of the day was "Mediana" -- Roman ruins on the outskirts of Niš. The next stop was the Skull Tower (Ćele kula), a dark reminder of the oppressive rule of the Ottoman Empire. The last stop before spending some time in the city centre was the Red Cross Nazi Concentration Camp. The day trip ended with a brief exploration of modern-day Niš and even the perusal (and purchase) of some items from Serbia's Yugoslav past. Enjoy!
The final track used in the video is the national anthem of Yugoslavia.

มุมมอง 26521 วันที่ผ่านมา
In this video, I explore some of the sights of Derry that are connected to the beloved TV show Derry Girls (available on Netflix)! 📺🇮🇪🎬 My Derry Girls-filled adventure began with an "Original Sights" walking tour of the city. Along the way, I visited iconic landmarks like the Guildhall of Derry, the historic Derry Walls, and the Tower Museum to check out their fantastic "Derry Girls Experience"...
Week Five: Ten Weeks in Sofia, Bulgaria 🇧🇬 Travel Vlog: Riding a Bulgarian Train to Montana
มุมมอง 47128 วันที่ผ่านมา
Join me on my fifth week in Sofia, Bulgaria as I visit Sofia's Central Market and miraculously arrive in Montana after an exciting train journey. 💛 I marvel at a few sightings of what I suspect are communist-era kiosks and purchase a book on that very topic. I explain that while I am all too happy to criticize communism as an ideology, that doesn't mean I don't sincerely appreciate Bulgarian hi...
Day Trip to Lisburn 🇮🇪 Ireland Travel Vlog: Hilden Mill, Linen Museum, and H Blocks (Failed Visit)
มุมมอง 333หลายเดือนก่อน
Join me for a day trip from Belfast to Lisburn, Ireland, via train! I started the day exploring the remains of the sadly burned Hilden Mill a poignant reminder of Ireland's industrial past. My next stop was the Irish Linen and Lisburn Museum, where I encountered a subtle yet noticeable exclusionary practice that left me disappointed. Finally, I attempted to visit the historic H Blocks of Long K...

In 1911, after Harland and Wolff completed Titanic’s construction, it was handed over to the White Star Line, which assumed responsibility for its operations. Following the ship’s tragic sinking in 1912, no one was held legally liable, as investigations concluded that Titanic met the safety standards of the time ⚓️ This pivotal moment in history is powerfully captured at the Titanic Museum in Belfast 🇮🇪
I’m missing Bulgaria today 😍🇧🇬 I only spent a few hours in the city of Lovech, but the view from the Hisarya Medieval Fortress absolutely took my breath away ❤️✨
Gorgeous! 🤩🌊
Definitely! I’ve been fortunate enough to visit a number of castles over the years, but I’d say this one offered the most breathtaking view.
Geez, all that graffiti is just AWFUL. Where's law enforcement?
Sofia seemed like it was covered in graffiti. For whatever reason, it just seems like a tolerated practice 🤷🏼♀️🎨
Thank you for visiting the Bulgarian city of Nis!🙂
Wow! I still have so much history I need to learn! It didn’t know it when I made this video, but Niš was, in fact, part of Bulgaria during the medieval period 🇧🇬
There was no such thing as Bulgaria before 18 century lol But i dare you to prove me wrong. Who ruled that bulgaria? Show me his grave and body pls?
Bulgaria has a well-documented history that dates back much earlier than the 18th century. The First Bulgarian Empire was established in 681 AD and played a significant role in the history of Southeastern Europe. Notable rulers like Khan Asparuh (its founder) and Tsar Simeon the Great (during the Golden Age of Bulgaria) left a strong legacy. While graves of ancient rulers can be difficult to verify due to the passage of time, historical evidence - like treaties, coins, and accounts from Byzantine historians - attests to Bulgaria’s existence long before the 18th century. 🤷🏼♀️
@@WayfaringLibertarian Yeah yeah spare me the Vatican lies. How come everyone has their kings burial places, but they don't? I can show you all of ours kings graves and bodies! why do they keep our king Milutin in their church? And kiss his feet! Because they don't have their own. If you can't show me graves then...........I''m right. I also have more proof that they are nation created artificially
I’ll be completely honest - I have no skin in this game. Haha. I am a student of history and will happily keep an open mind as I continue to learn.
When I visited this castle I had a wonderful time there. This castle has a beautiful view of the sea which allowed it to be protected from any enemy that might wanted to have attacked them. This castle with all of its history and beauty was well worth visiting.💚☘️💚☘️
Even on a cold and windy December day, it was absolutely stunning! It’s definitely one of Ireland’s most underrated attractions ❤️🇮🇪
There’s a popular piece of folklore associated with the castle that claims its kitchen collapsed into the sea during a violent storm in the 17th century, 🌊 taking the cooks and servants with it. According to the tale, only a single kitchen boy survived, saved because he was sitting in the corner of the room that remained intact. However, paintings from the 19th century depict the kitchen still standing, suggesting this dramatic story is more myth than fact. Even so, it adds to the rich tapestry of legends surrounding Dunluce Castle. 🏰🇮🇪💛
A divided region in a divided country as a result of brutal invasion colonisation and ethnic cleansing

Thank you for sharing your travels for everyone to see and to enjoy. I always look forward to seeing another new video from you.
That’s so kind of you 💛 I have what feels like hours and hours of video footage on my phone just waiting for me to get to it. I’m looking forward to posting some videos of Ireland, Bulgaria, and Greece in the coming weeks ☺️🇮🇪🇧🇬🇬🇷
Надам се да ћете истражити цео град Србије. на твом каналу? Ниш, Србија је најлепши град.
Niš was wonderful, but I’m quite eager to see Belgrade in the future. ☺️🇷🇸
Great video! I’m a tour guide that does Derry Girls tours and I’m pretty sure by your description of private tour and “original sites” which is the name of our tour that you done this with the company I work for :)! Hope you enjoyed your time in Derry!
Thank you very much! Gleann was my guide for the tour. His commentary was fantastic, so I just didn’t have the heart to interrupt listening to him by doing any mid-tour filming. ☺️ My visit to Derry was wonderful and I can’t wait to return again soon. 🇮🇪
To be honest, I wasn’t expecting to cover so many chapters of history on a single day trip. Niš was a fascinating city to visit, and I hope I’ll get the chance to return sometime 💛
It’s remarkable how something meant to be temporary has lasted for decades, but West Belfast’s Peace Walls serve to highlight the ongoing complexities of reconciliation in a divided society.
United Kingdom.
You must not have watched the video 🤷🏼♀️
I had a great time at this market. I can understand why it is such a popular place to visit.☘️💚
Did you get to try a Belfast Bap? They’re delicious (but slightly overrated, in my opinion). 🍳🥓
@@WayfaringLibertarianYes I did and it was delicious.☘️💚
Fun fact: During World War II, St. George’s Market was temporarily used as a mortuary following the Belfast Blitz. Its sturdy structure made it one of the few buildings that could accommodate such a tragic need during those dark times.
🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
"Our day will come" in Irish is "Tiocfaidh ár lá" (pronounced like "chuck-ee are law"). This phrase has deep historical significance and is often associated with the Irish republican movement as a symbol of hope and resilience during the struggle for independence and civil rights.
As someone who is not a proponent of violence, I have quite an aversion to the lyric "Whether your hand is on the ballot box or your hand is on the gun..." That said, it highlights an interesting historical aspect of the Irish republican movement, which once declared they had "an Armalite in one hand and a ballot box in the other." Fortunately, the movement has since shifted toward exclusively political means to pursue their goals -- a change that has been vital for peace and progress in Ireland. ❤️🇮🇪
The display Kit Kats 🤣❤️
I was hoping someone would catch my lame reference to them. 😅
This video is slightly niche and is largely for my fellow Derry Girls fans! Derry is such a fun city to explore, and every visit deepens my appreciation for the vibrant culture and history that shaped the show. While exploring the city, I attempted to channel my inner Orla (my favorite Derry Girl!) and fearlessly dive into this wee solo travel adventure. 💚
Hilden Mill in Lisburn -- once the largest linen thread mill in the world -- is a remarkable piece of industrial history with a storied past. Founded in 1823 by the Barbour family, the mill played a key role in Northern Ireland's globally renowned linen industry. 🧵At its peak, it employed thousands of workers and exported its high-quality thread worldwide. Though the mill ceased operations in 2006, its historic significance remains. However, its legacy has faced challenges in recent years due to a series of fires 🔥 that have damaged parts of the structure. These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the need to preserve and protect historic landmarks like Hilden Mill. 🕰 It’s fascinating (and a bit tragic) to think about how this once-thriving hub of innovation and labor has faced such turmoil in its later years.
I recently watched "In the Name of the Father" (a film about the Guildford Four, who were wrongfully convicted of IRA bombings in the 1970s), and I was SO surprised to see Kilmainham Gaol in the film! 🤩
🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
Derry Girls is such a cute show. Thank you for the tour of Londonderry Ireland.
Thank you for watching! I’m glad you enjoyed it and love Derry Girls too! I’ll give you a pass on the use of “Londonderry” though. Haha. The name “Derry” comes from the Irish word “Doire,” meaning oak grove. The addition of “London” came about after the 17th-century Siege of Derry and the involvement of the London guilds in colonizing the area. Many people in the city and across Ireland find the use of “Londonderry” contentious, as it can be seen as a reminder of colonialism and the struggles associated with that period. Locally, it’s most commonly referred to as Derry, so I try to use that name in respect of the city’s identity and history. ❤️🇮🇪
Gay pride more like
Great video!!! That pizza looked great! God Bless!!!!
Thank you! ☺️🙏🏼
Hopefully in replicating the old jail cells paint was used.😂
It was! 😅🙈
During the Irish republican prisoners' "No Wash" protest, their cells were stripped to the bare essentials: foam mattresses on the ground, containers for excrement (which were later smeared onto the cell walls to reduce the foul odor), blankets (worn in lieu of prison uniforms), and Bibles. Sadly, some of the prisoners used the pages of their Bibles to roll and smoke tobacco that had been smuggled into the prison. As this replica shows, the prisoners used torn pieces of their foam mattresses for the smearing of excrement. The replica does not show, however, the presence of maggots in the cells. It's my understanding that they were a prevalent issue -- one of many.
Fun fact: The use of language is an interesting tool used in the north of Ireland that can be used to distinguish where an individual's sympathies lay with regard to the Northern Ireland Conflict and the broader issue of Irish unity. A few examples include Northern Ireland v. North of Ireland, Derry v. Londonderry, Freedom Fighters v. Terrorists, H Blocks of Long Kesh v. HM Prison Maze, and, most relevant to this short: the "No Wash" Protest v. the "Dirty" Protest.
Believe it or not, the Bulgarian "leaders" who used to sit in this building were such "proponents" of egalitarianism that during Sofia’s May Day parade in 1986 -- just after the Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine -- they allowed the parade participants to march on ignorantly, while Bulgaria’s Communist leaders were nowhere to be found.
Any idea what the huge buildings are now being used for?
All three of those buildings (left, right, and center) are what’s called the “Largo Ensemble.” Today, they’re still mostly used as government offices and they house Bulgaria’s Council of Ministers and Bulgaria’s Presidency Building. Gone are the days of a red communist star adorning the top of the center building though!
Visitors to Sofia can still see the red star up close though (I was able to, and it was definitely a neat sight)! It’s now housed in Sofia’s “Museum of Socialist Art.” 🌟
Good luck with your channel. You did a great job showing the real Bulgaria. When you speak to the camera you need to remember to look at the lens not next to it. Short of that though I think that you did a great job! I will to continue to follow you and have subscribed. Just for a note. I am a Dutch-American with Portuguese residency, lol. I live in Alcoy, Spain in the Costa Blanca. I have an apartment that I own here and love it. I have lived here for a little less then a year full time but I did come here for several long stays since I bought my apartment three years ago. Once more, GOOD LUCK!
Thank you very much for your kind comment ☺️ Truthfully, I’m quite camera shy, so it doesn’t surprise me that I have lots of room for improvement when it comes to filming/speaking on camera. Haha. I haven’t made it over to Portugal yet, but I certainly hope I can make it over that way in the future. Thank you again for watching and commenting! 😊
TH-cam videos are very nice
Thanks! ☺️
You have had an amazing trip with a lifetime of memories made.
Most definitely. Despite a few hiccups, my ten weeks in Bulgaria are a time that I will always treasure ❤️🇧🇬🧳
If only those old buildings could talk the stories that they could tell.
Most definitely. For both the old mill and the old prison, I would be a captivated audience member - that’s for sure! ❤️
☘️💚
If these walls could talk, imagine the stories they’d tell. Countless events during the Northern Ireland Conflict unfolded around the Divis housing estate, making it a significant witness to modern Irish history.
oh lord I see yall also have woke folk slappin palestinian stickers all over the place due to excess time combined with lack of information (and inability to listen to new information which conflicts with the ego's beliefs 😅)
It’s not that deep, bro. This was an innocent reference to a TV show. 🤡🤷🏼♀️
Only fellow Derry Girls fans will understand ☺️❤️🇮🇪
Nowadays woke Neo-Marxism in the West seems worse
Probably. But, the tide seems to be turning back towards sanity where I’m from 🙌🏼🇺🇸
@@WayfaringLibertarian I agree
The Cranberries great song with Dolores O’Riardon’s haunting vocal . Has to be one of the greatest tracks of all time !
Yes - her voice is hauntingly beautiful!! 🎵😍
✝️🎄❤🇮🇪
Looks like you had a fantastic trip. I can see the difference between the Tayto crisp bags.
I’m not sure if the museum had any bags of Tayto from the south of Ireland, but the video shows a modern-day bag (the yellow cheese and onion 💛) and a bag that I assume would have been from the 1990s - the period that Derry Girls is set in. I just love how it even shows the prince for the bag - 18 pence!
Much like the wee English fella, I AM a Derry girl! ❤️🇮🇪🥰 P.S. I absolutely love how the cork board says “A Tale of 2 Taytos” and “Two Tayto Nation.” 😂
In many foreign countries stray cats and dogs are fed and cared for by the locals, and they allow tourists to feed them also. Some countries even have fines or jail time for mistreating strays.
Indeed. In Bulgaria, I saw many more stray cats than dogs and they all appeared to be fat and happy ☺️🐈
Such a shame that it was vandalized. What a great piece of artwork. We all need to just vent sometimes.
It’s actually a functioning vent system for something underground. lol. You’d be hard pressed to find much of anything in Sofia without spray paint on it though. I actually like that the graffiti adds a splash of color. It might not be a piece of artwork in the traditional sense, but I certainly found it interesting and worth looking at for a few minutes ☺️
