    Best demonstration of hand piecing I’ve seen yet! Never mind the cars, I’m fully focused on watching you. So glad I found you, I’ve just started the Dear Jane quilt and I want to hand piece it. I just did a star the same as yours and I’m not happy with the centre ( and I will be unpicking it!) so your video is timely and much appreciated. Have subscribed 🥰

    Beautiful! This is how my paternal grandmother taught us to piece stars! I have an antique top that wasn't finished and I believe the sewer didn't know how toease the star points! I have been wondering if I dampen the centers, if I could work some magic 🤔 So many times I've seen circles appliqued to star centers .Probably why mariners compass etc all have circles in the centers. 🎉

    Where can we get those acrylic templates?

    • @wendysquiltsandmore
      @wendysquiltsandmore ปีที่แล้ว

      Lots of quilt shops stock acrylic templates. You probably need to ask for them. Paper Pieces in USA make acrylic templates for hand piecing. Also Amitie Textiles in Australia.

    After hand piecing, do we need to do something to the raw edges to keep it from fraying?

    • @wendysquiltsandmore
      @wendysquiltsandmore ปีที่แล้ว

      No need to do anything to keep it from fraying. When the quilt is layered with batting and backing the raw edges will all be safely enclosed.

    Thank you for such a thorough introduction to hand piecing. It is really helpful, especially explaining the equipments (sandpaper...of course...that will stop the pesky little bits moving) and the techniques (love the tailor's knot...I will use that from now on in my handsewing). I'm starting the Nearly Insane Quilt, which may be a tad adverturous...but I feel better equipped now having found your videos. Thank you Wendy.

    Can anyone get their tailors knot to work? When I twist my threads on either side of the needle, they just sit on the fabric and don’t form a knot.

    • @wendysquiltsandmore
      @wendysquiltsandmore 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi. do you take one whole up and down stitch first, and then put your needle through the same holes again but leave it in the fabric while you put the threads around the tip poking out?

    • @duskbloom
      @duskbloom 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wendysquiltsandmore thank you for responding. I worked out that I was putting the wrong “tail thread” around the needle. I think this is why the knot wasn’t forming. It seems to be holding now. Thank you so much for these instructions.

    Beautiful. Took me multiple views to understand "top thread" and "bottom thread". Top thread - the thread that is coming up from the fabric that has just been stitched and bottom thread is the thread as it is coming from the needle. Got it. Thanks. I've been sewing FOREVER and now have a new knot.
