    So about this crankcase problem, wouldn't the fuel just drain from the float bowl drains instead of dumping into the cylinder? I have this bike and would like to know what to look out for, thanks.

    • @JVWinalberta
      @JVWinalberta หลายเดือนก่อน

      Some bikes will drain back into the airbox, some go the other way into the intake ports on the head. Its the way the YX600 intake ports are angled, the way the bike sits on the stand, etc. When the petcock lets go, and starts dripping fuel through, it leches into the bowl by overpowering the little float needes and seats. I've seen a good chunk of the fuel tank sitting in engine various Suzuki and Yamaha engines. And then the modern fuel will attack the crank seals, gaskets, etc. I bought mine here: www.ebay.com/itm/322556274914 and installed it this spring (2024), and it seems to be holding fuel just fine now, no issues to report.

    2005 was the year Suzuki changed over to FI on their cruisers (VL800, M800, VL1500, etc. also known as the C50, M50, C90). Early VL800 had a single downdraft carb, similar to the carbed VL1500, but just the one sitting between the top of cylinder heads attached to a 'Y' shaped intake manifold. Easy to work on, easy to ride and control even at low speeds. Two tips: to extend their engine life change the oil more frequently than it is suggested in the manual (3000 mi / 5000 km max), they often have lubrication issues at high revs. If ridden a lot at high speeds - short gearing so it will rev fairly high - eventually it will start consuming oil and there is no way back but a top end rebuild. Second tip is related to the first - if you intend to get one, try finding a low mileage example and use a good synthetic oil.

    • @JVWinalberta
      @JVWinalberta หลายเดือนก่อน

      Seems like there were a number of Suzuki's burning oil around that time. The GSF1200 Bandit and AN400 Burgman come to mind, where owners were being treated to free top ends from Suzuki. Not sure if that was the same here...

    you make some great points, I picked one of these up as my first bike a couple of years ago. It had been off the road for 25 years and took a bit to get going, but its been a great bike and never left me stranded. As a small guy at 5'5 its hard to find anything similar in performance that is as small and light as the radian, and that makes it super enjoyable. It is definitely best as an around town bike, even with some gearing changes its not very fun on the highway. Its a bit of an 80s yamaha parts bin, but that does mean that a fair bit of the parts are shared with the fazer and other bikes. Its got a pretty helpful community behind it and a lot of people are making parts and putting in work to keep these things on the road!

    The Radian gearing was super short compared to the FZ gearing. A top speed of 166kph vs 182kph (give or take). The Radian also carried over the FZ600 calipers front and back along with a list of parts from the bin. They also ran lean on the top end (like 130kph +) and didnt like more weight while doing so. The engine paint fell off the cylinders as per typical Yamahas back in the day. Sweet power wheelies in first though!

    I’m finishing up a complete restore of an ‘82 Sabre v45 with 17k miles. Everything needed attention. It does have air assist rear suspension. There’s about 8 linkage points, each had about 1mm play (rattles everywhere). I corrected it while I had the engine off for maintenance and fresh paint. These bikes definitely require mechanically inclination. But, when all the work is done, you get rewarded! One dig into the throttle makes you forget all the work involved!

    I try to always remember to keep my eyes on my mirrors when i stop, and keep my bike in gear in case i need to move out of the way quick! These cagers do not see us and they DO NOT CARE! I have seen too many brother riders die in front of me. And i have seen what happens after, the driver always will say in court that the rider was at fault and in the wrong. If this guy didnt have his gopro recording that woman and her insurance company would have blamed the rider! And that is one reason i ride offensively, not defensively, meaning my goal when riding is always to get to my destination as smoothly and safely (for me) as possible. @@JVWinalberta Agreed. The 1948 Chiefs were mostly black-out and also had two visibly mounted 'plunger style' rear shocks (albeit slightly different location than the 1500 Drifter) while the Harleys of the era were still using a rigid frame with their 48 Hydra-Glide.

    You forgot to mention radiator, short stroke, under square Bore 103mm Stroke 90mm. No torque, constantly changing gears. Typical Japanese bike, but with Indian fenders, with no pleasure in riding.

      True, a little less refined from some other offerings like the Yamaha XVS1900, but kind of makes up for it with that look, eh?. And that engine, man, goes back to 87 or 88, kind of long in the tooth, except at the time it was quite the V twin.

      @@JVWinalbertaI've got a 2006 VN 800 Drifter I really love the bike I want to put fish tales on it but will that mess up the tuning in the exhaust? Right now it's got Vance and Hines on it ? I always love to the old Harleys and Indians of course I had a wife and kids back in those days .so I can afford this bike for $3,000 with with 5,000 original miles. and it's got the old time look that I love. you know I was a barn painter in Wisconsin and in 1994 there was an original full dress 47 Indian chief in the barn and it had everything on it. I probably could have bought it .he said right out his family was not interested in it ! the bike he drove it there and parked it after the war!! I just never had a bank loan in my live 😮so I didn't even throw him an offer! That's before prices went crazy on old Harley and Indian .I was painting his barn and I was a barn painter .how can I forget my one opportunity at a full dress 47 Chief right

    I had the same identical bike. I got it up to 90 and blew the rear head gasket. I ride Harleys now.

    I love the 1500 Drifter. I think the 800 Drifter looks more retro with the hidden rear shocks but obviously the 1500 is a better road bike. I remember seeing them on the dealer showroom floor in 1998 or 99 and feeling Wow! Good price too. But that wasn't my priority then, wife and children were. Now I want one.

    Sure, but will it wake up the entire neighborhood, leak oil, and require ruinously expensive maintenance like an American cruiser? hahaha

    Really like these Drifters, but I hate it when I see people putting Indian stickers on them.

    I have always loved these bikes. I was at a national antique motorcycle meet (AMCA) in Davenport, Iowa when these were new and someone had wheeled one of these at the end of a line of beautifully restored '30s-'50s Indians as a joke, like it was to be judged in the show. I'm sure someone heard about it when the judges discovered it, but at the time I was there, people were just walking past it, not giving it a second glance or saying anything about it, like it belonged there. That's a good copy!
