Aleph Null is color music. No audio. It's an online, generative, interactive, open source visual work written in JavaScript using the HTML5 canvas tag. No plugin required. There's also a slideshow of screenshots to give you a sense of what it can look like in full flight. Turn the lights off. It's like hunting the Snark, beauty or butterflies. It takes a little practice. It's like an instrument...

      Thanks, Alan. You can see the relation between this piece and the earlier Checking In videopoems with Adeena, but I think this one is substantially different in the visual (and behavioral) treatment of the language--as well of course very different in Adeena's two poems. This one has a whole lot of little animations within it. Which I created in a video editor (Camtasia). The synch of voice and text spun this videopoem into an exploration of spoken word and music therefrom, of rhythm but also emphasis, cadence, feeling, emotion, passion--and comedy. One of the really wonderful things about Adeena's poem is the double sense of both real passion/intensity with humour. That's an important edge in Adeena's poem; the visuals of the videopoem eventually have to get on that ledge too. The images that fill the text are digital collages of a set of publicly-licensed images I collected called Alchemical Cosmography. The underlying images are mainly 9th to 18th century images concerned with alchemy and/or cosmography (in the sense of 'pics of the cosmos'). I've been working on this pretty hard for months, now. That is a good way to read a poem very closely. I have read this poem through and through, and by word and phrase, repeatedly, in compositing and editing the videopoem. Yet it still seems quite fresh to me, and there's still lots about it that I haven't looked into as deeply as I eventually will. I think Adeena has created a beautiful and significant poem in "Lorem Ipsum". I'm glad to be part of it.

      @@vispocom Your approach reminds me of the Talmud and Talmudic readings; on and off I've focused on the Pirke Avot and various translations - for someone religious (I'm not) it takes years to understand the text. I love what you do with the poem in terms of the animations - beautiful. I've followed your work for years now and the finesse is remarkable. And there is something Talmudic about it also in the care in the sense also of a gleaning, reading beneath the surfaces, bringing out the sound and grit of the writing itself.

    • @vispocom
      @vispocom ปีที่แล้ว

      @@asondheim , thanks very much. I am unfamiliar with the Talmud, but Adeena's poem has a strong classical dimension in that it's a homophonic translation of a piece by Cicero. The particular section of Cicero's text she uses is about hedonism. Her poem has a kind of Latin cadence--which you'd expect in a homophonic translation--and gravitas, even while it's a bit wild and naughty. She commented, at one point in the dev of the video, that it was important not to let the video visuals devolve simply into silliness, which I totally agreed with--though they are funny, sometimes, I hope, like the poem can be funny. It's been interesting to learn something, mostly just by trial and error, about tone in such matters of animation of letters/language. Yes, we've been following each other's work for about 25 years now, Alan. I admire not only your work but your passion for creating and participating in an online community of artists/writers. And I have a sense of gratitude, really, both for your work in writing/art/music and your remarks not only about my work but art, politics, and whatnot more generally.
