I was strolling down memory lane tonight and watched Arlo playing this (first enjoyed it over 50 years ago), looked up the music style, heard a musician say, "it wasn't the devil's music; that was just a way to attack black people", and also happened on your video and your statement about it being Travis picking (which is true, of course). So, honouring the synchronicity of it all, I thought I'd mention what Wikipedia had to say. The music style is listed (FWIW) as Piedmont blues style, a style "differentiated from other styles, particularly the Mississippi Delta blues, by its ragtime-based rhythms." "Piedmont blues (also known as East Coast, or Southeastern blues) refers primarily to a guitar style, which is characterized by a fingerpicking approach in which a regular, alternating thumb bass string rhythmic pattern supports a syncopated melody using the treble strings generally picked with the forefinger, occasionally others. The result is comparable in sound to ragtime or stride piano styles." And credit where credit is due: "What was particular to the Piedmont was that a generation of players adapted these older, ragtime-based techniques to blues in a singular and popular fashion, influenced by guitarists such as Blind Blake and Gary Davis." Of course there's nothing new under the sun and Travis was standing on the shoulders of others as we all are, but I thought this was interesting, especially the connection to black blues guitar players from 100 years ago.

That was really pretty. I still can't rap my head around singing and playing at the same time (can't sing at all really) so I find this very impressive. I do recommend one thing, though: when playing fingerstyle, try curling away your pinky and keep all fingers off the body of the guitar. This can give you a little bit of a richer sound as the top can resonate more. It is also good to build those right arm and hand muscles by training them to hover over the strings freely. Anyways this is just one person's advice. You're doing amazing, keep it up!!
