1st Session On The Refurbished Kalahari Flowrider. 11/27/24
1st session on the newly refurbished Kalahari Flowrider in the Poconos, PA. Everything is brand new, super shiney, and super slippery. They really did a fantastic job rebuilding this wave! Decided to just play around and try some tricks that I've seen some of my favorite riders do. Riding up onto the top corners like TK Barreto, frontside bigspins like Mike Caffrey, and front 3-shuvs like Nate Newman. All these tricks are in the early stages and look choppy and ugly, but off to a great start. Needs a lot more practice!

I have been struggling on shuvit for years now. and you perfectly explain why I have been struggling for so long. im going to be on a royal Caribbean cruise with a flow rider next week and im hoping to be able to do them after this trip. if I do, it will be mainly thanks to this video.

      Thanks for the feed back. Good luck with them on the cruise. If you land any, then post some video on the Royal Caribbean Flowrider Society page on Facebook, and celebrate hard that night. Even if you don't make any, post some video on there, and lots of riders will give you suggestions on how to improve them. Hard trick to learn, but keep at them and you'll get it!

    how do you do 360 frontside?

    • @flowcoach3714
      @flowcoach3714 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Could do a whole video on it, but here's the primary tip. When you go do a frontside carve, your weight shifts from heavy on your tail foot (70%), to heavy on your front foot to make the turn, then the weight shifts back to your tail foot to stop the turn and send you off in the opposite direction. When doing a frontside 360 , as you frontside carve into it, you now want to keep your weigh on your front foot. Don't shift your weight back to your tail foot. That will keep you spinning to get the 360. Keep more of your weight on your front foot as you spin, then shift it to the tail when you're ready to stop the spin. Keep your edges up, and practice the balance. You'll get it!

    Another great video Coach. Probably should have stayed away from the bigger carving techniques for the purposes of this beginner video to pass the RCCL "advanced rider" test though. The test is extremely subjective from guard, guard which causes frustration for many cruisers but RCCL is doing all they can to minimize risk and additional litigation from travelers who want to try standup but probably should stick to body boarding for their own good. Best tip I can give is don't get an attitude with the guards. Their subjective opinions will likely be more lenient if you build a good report with them. One of the biggest loading mistakes I see is people just try to push off and stand up way too fast. Slow and steady is the key when starting out. Another big mistake I see is people push themselves in starting with the board at an angle and and this rarely ends up good. I try to tell people to make sure the board is parallel to the side line of the wave when pushing themselves in. Your description of Weight shift 70% back is excellent and slight movements from heels then toes to slowly control side to side motion usually results in passing the test. Keep up the great work. I only ride when on ships and your videos have helped me tremendously. Hoping for an empty wave for our New England cruise in Octoburrrrr😁🏄👍

      Thanks for the input. Since part of this test is demonstrating controlled movement across the wave, I had to show people how you actually steer a flowboard. It's the same technique whether you are beginner slowly moving across the wave or a pro spraying massive amounts of water. I hope that I was able to explain the technique well and then demonstrate that minimal steering (carving) movement is best for this test. Also, I love the comment about the guards. Whatever Flowrider you're at, always get to know the guards and staff in general. Not only are they usually some of the coolest people to hang with, but they are also great to ride with!

    On the symphony Feb 2023, one new rider I thought would qualify for a blue band was denied. He lasted a good 20-30 seconds, but was more reactionary, and just stood in the center of the wave. Afterwards talking to the staff, they told me they are looking for balance and control. so staying on the board for 20+seconds, but also a basic ability to toeside-heelside turn,, just a basic drift in each direction to demonstrate control

  • @jaculpiii

    Great video Andy! Something that really messed me up in the beginning and still catches me occasionally that most flowguards and instructors don't seem to pick up on. If your back foot heel is sticking off the board the wave will catch it and keep kicking the board to the side. I've seen several new riders (including myself) that struggle and struggle until they get that heel all of the way on the board, if your toes are hanging off a little it's not as significant. When pushing in it's often helpful to move further up the wave where the current has come closer to the wall stronger, you can't go too high or the guards get nervous but a little higher helps you get into good water faster, especially helpful for bigger riders like me. The advice to focus straight on the side wall is great, when I was trying the guards kept saying "look at me" and when I turned my head my shoulders followed and I immediately fell.

In other news I tried to buy a board from a brick and mortar store this weekend so I could ride at Moreys in Wildwood. You have to bring your own. No one sells them but after speaking to Chris at the Kona board house he is gonna look into making them. Lol! I thought you were pro flowboarder Chuck Wright. He's one of the legends in the sport. If you are going to get a board, then use an actual flowboard company. While I'm sure Kona could make a board, I wouldn't want their initial attempts at it. My best advice is buy a Aquaflow board made by Winfield Austin, or a MAK board made by Jeremie Miller. Both of these guys ride extremely well, and both are master flowboard makers. They are the owners, sole board makers, have made hundreds/thousands of boards, and can get you set up properly. They have their methods down, and will build you a board that will perform and last. Trust me on this.

    Oh man did not know this existed so close to me. So $37 is just to get into the park and you have to purchase wave time separately? Thanks for the video!

    • @flowcoach3714
      @flowcoach3714 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, $37 to get in. That covers a lot of free activities once you are in. They charge extra for the wave time and golf simulator. Their website would tell you what's included.

      @@flowcoach3714 what time/day of the week did you go where you ended up getting the wave all to yourself?

    • @flowcoach3714
      @flowcoach3714 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I rode the wave on a Saturday from 12-1 in the afternoon. There were some kids riding the wave both before my sessions and afterward, but none of them wanted any part of that full wave. The kids were doing the "beginner" sessions where just the standard right side of the wave was in use.

    An extremely detailed and methodical description perfect for beginners needing expert advice on how to get the next level. The videos on and off the wave are excellent. There is no one on the web putting out flowboarding training videos of this quality! Andy, thank you so much for taking the time and sharing your techniques!
