The surah title in English doesn’t really have a meaning, it’s just the letters Ya and Sin. This is based on the hadith, Narrated Anas, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Indeed for everything there is a heart, and the Qur’an’s heart is Ya Sin. Whoever recites Ya Sin, then for its recitation, Allah writes for him that he recited the Qur’an ten times.” from Jami at-Tirmidhi 2887. But this hadith is da’if (weak). The virtues of reading the Qur’an are well known and understood, but there is no authentic (sahih) hadith which mentions any added virtue to reciting this Surah.There are traditions of reciting Surah ya-Sin over the dead, or dying. This is based off the hadith, “Recite Ya-sin over your dead” (Ahmad) However, this tradition remains a topic of discussion. The hadith chain of narration remains da’if and there is no mention in the Qur’an as to what to do.
