Test welding with 2 solar panels at over 10 amps
My first attempt at welding with solar panels. I used 2 panels, Sharp NU-185 (E1), rated at 24V and 7.7A, 8.54A short-circuit current, connected in parallel. The panels are on the roof at over 30° tilt, direction south-east (not optimal). I was measuring between 10 and 11 amps while "welding". The circuit was comprised of simply 2 panels connected in parallel and through a DMM capable of measuring up to 20A. I held the electrode in my bare hand and pressed the DMM probe on its bare (contact) end without feeling much heat.
This test was done during winter on December 12, just before noon, on a fairly clear, sunny day. The Sun is almost at the lowest point in the sky (9 days from Winter Solstice), so this is a good test of winter time capabilities of solar panels.
Since the panels' peak short-circuit current is 8.54A per panel and 17.08A for both, getting 10-11A while they're not pointed straight at the Sun, and all this around Winter Solstice, I would say I'm impressed and satisfied with their performance during sunny winter days.
