Even great minds like Adler and Aristotle are susceptible to false notions of well-being. not only is happiness overrated (however you define it) it's also fleeting. Being calm...that is the state of being worth pursuing more than any other. It doesn't require all the external pieces of the disparate puzzles of existence to fall into place (luck). it's not dependent on the vicissitudes of life and good fortune, as is happiness. Aristotle's whole-life definition of happiness does not change a single thing about this. Adler also mistakenly believed in the existence of god...a fantasy people have ruinously pursued time and time again. This false notion is the greatest threat to well-being that humanity has ever invented. Be calm my friends!

Taxation that enables government to provide goods and services that only it can provide (a military, treaties with foreign nations, public infrastructure (parks, interstate highways, interstate commerce)) is not what we have today. Does the average citizen even know what proportion of their taxes goes toward merely the sustainment of the government itself with no benefit accrued to general welfare unless the general welfare means the government only?

Adler is a stuffy elitist. He left out extending "the franchise"--a business term!) to the young inasmuch as their age permits understanding. Furthermore, loyalty to the constitution is, as Dr. Adler stated, is loyalty to a body without the head! I'd prefer to be loyal to the head because the times change institutions--but "the head" must remain resolved to its purpose. Does the american political system conform to this?---Hardly! Especially with a burgeoning population of 300+ million!!! It's not the original small colonies dotted with small towns where face to face discussions can take place and where representatives KNOW their constituencies! The ratio today, for example, between representatives and constituencies are something in the order of many tens of thousands to one! Why don't the viewer look at the audience !--Is there a wide scope of representation that reflects the general population? Adler is a lousy speaker; he rushes through words that make his many statements unintelligible. And american history is a history of violence! What the hell is Adler talking about?--not american society as it actually has played out!!

Just watching this as I’ve just begun reading this book. An interesting point, a student brought up Tyranny of the Minority and Adler said never, not in a constitutional republic with a majority vote. But today it seems there are many issues, stances, causes that are minority positions in terms of number and sometimes for groups that is forced upon the majority without vote but executive pen that is able to prevail now not because it’s just but instead it’s now the position of a majority of the media. Media is no longer interested in journalism but has chosen sides in activism. I’m not sure that was quite the case then when Adler says no, never. It seems to me today that potentially the most powerful institution is the media , when mostly all side together and choose a political lens with which to report and persuade, facts are no longer the driver persuasion is, leading to propaganda. When it’s aligned with one party it is no longer a check that it once was on power but an enabler to centralized power. Maybe I’m wrong, it’s my opinion but I wonder if that is something that ever or never entered into Adlers thinking because it was not an issue of that time or much smaller and isolated?

Adler is a phony. No knowledge of, or interest in pedagogy. His theories of education now debunked, I'm sure the conservatives will try to characterize his teaching as insightful. They were not. It is almost embarrassing to see Moyers fawn over Adler.

Dr. Donta, I was referred to you by two friends that you treated. We both worked at Otis AFB in the field, where we think we contracted Lyme. You saved my life with your treatment when 5 other doctors told me I did not have Lyme. For 10 years I was undiagnosed and sent to cardiologists, rheumatoid arthritis doctors, told I had MS. In other words, in order to understand human communication, one must first understand human nature as a whole - not simply in terms of our computer-like ability to process data and exchange information.
