Urinals flushing. Welcome to TH-cam's dullest channel. 😉
Public conveniences in the form we recognise today only became widespread in the late 19th century with the advent of running water and sewers. Space-saving communal urinals were increasingly provided in workplaces, schools, parks, pubs, railway stations and other public places, using the same technology as the flush toilet to dispose of waste. The periodic and automatic flushing of troughs or groups of fixtures by means of an automatic syphon remains common to this day in Britain and Ireland.
There are lots of toilet channels featuring every kind of WC just about anywhere in the world, but urinals often get overlooked. With traditional cistern flush urinals now threatened by the move to 'water free' or even being ripped out altogether in favour of 'unisex' facilities, I aim to document as many as I can. WCs may also feature on some videos.

Johnson Fireclay Slab | PH | Slad
This is a popular and historic Cotswold pub with much to admire, so naturally we headed straight to the (outside) toilets. Firstly, top marks here for atmosphere! Both male and female toilets are in an outbuilding, and being on a hillside the Ladies adjoins the Mens but about half a level higher. In the mens we have roughcast walls, a single WC cubicle and this delightful old Johnson Fireclay slab standing ready for your contribution. The dim lighting and resident flies complete the picture.
The washbasin (out of shot left) drains into the urinal, and judging by the plumbing layout so does the waste from ladies' washbasin next door providing a kind of pre-flush rinse. But it's the sticker-covered plastic cistern that ultimately washes everything away, perched atop a large bracket inscribed "boobies" and "no bum sex" but hinting at something more substantial and long ago replaced.
As you'll see the flush was slow to get going. There was a PIR water saver installed but the cistern fill valve seemed to be permanently open. I didn't manage to capture the WC this time but it was a high-level.

This installation was at a hotel on Bournemouth seafront. Given the age and grandeur of the building I'd hoped to find something a bit more interesting, but instead there was a trio of Twyford Cliftons flushed by what looked like a Lecico auto-cistern. Never mind, we haven't featured these for ages on the channel and they had a decent flush. Not personally a huge fan of this type of spreader/pa...

Bournemouth is a pretty cool place for toilet fans, there are just so many. This unbranded steel slab is typical of many along the seafront, and can be found in the public toilets at West Cliff Green a short walk west of the pier (which has the most epic toilets of all) beyond the cliff lift. There's not a lot else to say really. Only the slab itself was accessible. The cistern was concealed, p...

I decided to do a quick reshoot of the lovely old block by the A696 in Otterburn, Northumberland that I filmed last year. Two reasons for this. Earlier this year the local Council's Facebook page suggested that these toilets had been refurbished, and I thought if nothing else it might make good footage for a future video about urinals lost to toilet refurbishments. And secondly, I made a total ...

Small village convenience, similar layout to others in the area. The flush for this slab appeared to be controlled by a ceiling-mounted PIR with a fifteen minute cycle (that's how long I had to wait after triggering it). There was one WC which was in a disgusting state, so I didn't document that. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ /// flies.spires.objective

This has got to be my new candidate for the world's most leisurely urinal flush - all three minutes of it! It took so long to get going that I struggled to work out where to put our little animated toilet watermark that usually goes at the start of each flush. It's so feeble that you'll probably get bored before the end of the video, even if you actually like watching this stuff. The location i...

As featured on 'Up The Shires' channel about six years ago, and thankfully still here in all its glory, this classic pub urinal slab flushed periodically by a big and sexy cistern that bore no identifying marks but had a nice stuttery refill and a decent, regular flush. There seem to be more survivors in northern pubs than there are down south, where it's rare to find a boozer that hasn't had a...
A brief history of urinals in Britain 🇬🇧
มุมมอง 1.8K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
And now for something completely different. How did we get from the beautifully crafted toilet cathedrals of the late Victorian age to lacking even the basics in the 21st century? I've been meaning to do a more general video on the evolution (or perhaps devolution?) of urinals since I started the channel, so being between jobs and with there not being much worth filming lately I've had a bit to...

Once again it's that time of year where we look back at all the toilets that didn't make it onto the channel this year. Among them a mixture of the rare, spectacular, and just plain ordinary. So sit back, relax and feast your eyes on literally dozens of p-taking plumbing fixtures from around Britain. As per tradition on Jesseshanks98, we'll also be revealing a new "Urinal of the Year" based on ...

Last toilet for this year that I found on my phone. This one was next to a kids playground and recreation field, with exactly the same layout as the convenience in nearby Bourne End that I featured in another video. You can't beat a trip to the British seaside for a good old bit of toilet heritage, not even in winter! We took a quick tour of Clacton's seafront latrines, and were overjoyed to find few signs of modernisation. 0:00 AMBLESIDE Not Cumbria, but a five minute walk east of Clacton Pier. These Franke Sissons steel urinal pans are a common sight in modern public toilet designs, but rarely feature an exposed cistern as here. The left hand pan was original but the one on the right had a modified sparge adapted to a replacement spreader that had been fitted at some point. Unfortunately the video ends before the flush finishes due to being interrupted, but trust me when I say it's n...

Another SDS slab/trough, this time in a fairly modern convenience serving a popular market town. I was very lucky to catch this one in action as it's a busy location in constant use, and the cistern is flushed by a 'Dudley Kinetic' PIR which even in its least economic mode is programmed to wait at least 40 minutes after being triggered before flushing. In other words, it doesn't happen that oft...
These urinals are Grade II listed 😲
มุมมอง 885ปีที่แล้ว
I have to admit that toilets are a bit of a niche interest. Heritage facilities are being lost all the time and there's little appetite among the public for preservation. One exception is the underground public toilets on Seaburn seafront in Sunderland, which gained Grade II listed status in 2020. These Edwardian toilets dating from around 1901 were closed in the 1960s, but survived intact and ...

The first exhibit to open in 2019 was a community hall, based on Coundon Community Centre in nearby Bishop Auckland exactly as it would have been when originally built. i was really wondering why mens urinals were open as apposed to the water closets of women’s bathrooms and this actually explains a bit of it. good work!
No Australia urinals are better
Master raptor
These are very close to me. A lot of people from the streets around though. This was my video earlier in the year that includes the disabled th-cam.com/video/3d5xlBS8oEw/w-d-xo.html
What was inside the cubicle?
Yes, nice sound. I do prefer individual urinals.
I do like to hear a urinal flush, to me that is a satisfying sound as you know everything is working as it should & the urinal is being kept clean & the waste trap clear of standing stale urine which will cause eventual unpleasant blockages if not flushed through. The sound of the start & finish of a urinal flush is very unique indeed.
I liked the two toilets at the end and them being flushed.
Great video for something AI voiced. Pretty good vpicing other than she says Urinal wrong which is ironic since its the topic of the video 😅
I'd agree with you but it depends which side of the Atlantic you're from, I guess 😀
Love the old pan and high levels
I have seen these lazy flushers before. Bournemouth and Poole also have some urinals that run as and when. They might not go for a few days and then for some reason they will start working again
It is a shame that sometimes refurbishments are more than 'a lick of paint' and usually result in low quality fixtures and on going problems that will then last for years
Woohoo! I gotta come back up here to get more HLs
lovely stuff, love the old Standard pan
Really good video! Thanks for posting it. I would have liked to hear a less robotic voice but the info was great.
Glad you liked it. The voice was the least bad I could find without paying, but as others have commented I'll try to do better next time!
Good sound. The rest has already been noted.
The sight and sound of older urinals is more interesting. Good film, but a longer one would be of interest too.
That was unexpectedly loud.
Nice to see these. When I went there almost ten years ago they where closed
Nice old slab urinal in very good condition & good to see it being flushed as well. I do like the unique noise it makes when flushing, it used to scare me once upon a time! I think the urinal cistern should have some kind of valve on water inlet to regulate the flush times & to reduce water wastage too. A shame about the 'bog standard' toilet in the cubicle!
What was the toilet?
1:22
@Leeswinburn I love the sound of the urinal and it was filled up with water when it comes down the urinal.
Love the filling sound! How often does it flush??
Sounded like it was filling a bit fast, but that's a big cistern. I'd say roughly every 10-12 minutes. I waited 7 minutes so it's longer than that.
I do like the older urinals - especially the late 19th/early 20th Century ornate examples. They should be preserved for future generations. As for the waterless urinal I personally don't like them as they are rather smelly in high use locations - the individual flush urinals are a much better solution for new installations!
Every Guy loves to use a urinal !
How can anyone read aloud so badly?
Pretty sure it's an AI generated voice.
Just looking at that thumbnail was enough to get me to smell stale piss, or it could be that I'm watching this in the pub lavatory, I guess that's just another one of life's little mysteries that we'll never have the real answer to.
That's incredible. Thanks for sharing
These urinals seem noisy… am I right? Most of the urinals in Canada make around 65 dB (according to my phone). Some can be as quiet as 50 dB, and some can be as loud as 90 dB! The ones in my videos were pretty much 65 dB.
Yes it is quite loud. The sound is caused by air mixed in with the water, and I think this type of spreader with the wide slot helps too. Sometimes it takes a while for the syphon to get established properly but this one was instant and very forceful. I've never tried measuring dBs.
Nice video! Do you have any social medias so we could contact each other to share our interests about urinals?
Thank you! Not big on socials tbh, but see the "About" tab on the channel if you want to inbox me. 👍
@@jesseshanks98 where do I find it?
Someone at TH-cam helpfully decided to move the easy to find "About" tab and make it a popup window. In a browser go to the channel homepage (click on Jesseshanks98 above) then right at the top of the page by the logo click on the channel description where it says "Urinals flushing" etc. Might not show up on the YT app.
Blimey I know which pub this is - I pop in for the all-you-can eat breakfast on several of my cycle rides lol
Really lovely around there.
I have to go pee now…
I have been wanting to do Clacton for some time now but hopefully I will oneday and the pier is one place I would like to do
It is a really nice, original setting.
Yeahhh I keep on forgetting this place exists, I need to go there lol, amazing stuff
I think you’ll like the WCs. Defo worthy of an appearance on your channel.
Someone has got a nice pleasant job to unblock that urinal drain! By the way it is not an overflow, it is a drain so please get facts right before we comment on here please! Thank you.
It is indeed a drain - one that has overflowed.
Pretty quiet!
So what do you do if that happens midstream?
OMG an Armitage shanks Perth pan!!!
Very pleased to see these. I can even with severely reduced vision, see the water. They sound great too.
Reminds me of the ones just of Princes Street Edinburgh Proper toilets.
They look stunning
Looks old style
I'm not a huge fan of metal slab urinals, but you filmed this one well and I was wondering if it was off the ground, and wall hung. Good flush in the single toilet however.
Definitely wall hung. It's a bit of a close-up because there wasn't much space to work with and I obviously didn't want to stand near the open door.
@@jesseshanks98 Yes, I kinda guessed 'wall hung, but I wasn't sure.
Good lord! That's a bakelite / leadlined cistern in that roof space too 😲😲😲😲
I don't know how you work that out, but you sure do know your stuff Mr Hawk!
@@jesseshanks98 the light weight drop of the chain and then the trickle going down, deffo a dudley japtic syphon in a very old cistern

Nice
Good filming.
