The Undraped Artist Podcast
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 2 พ.ค. 2022
My name is Jeff Hein. I've been a full-time artist since 2002. Twenty years ago, when painting was new to me and I was trying to start an art career, I would have given anything to have had the opportunity to speak with some of the greatest artists alive. Well, it's never too late to learn and be inspired. Now I have that opportunity and I'd like to share my conversations with you. I hope you get as much out of them as I do.

ART Business Undraped with Scott Jones

ART Business Undraped with Scott Jones
I’m watching Ellie for the second time and I see I made a comment about her 4months ago. She’s incredible… studied with one of my favorite painters. Scott Christiansen. Pleinair competitions have been around since I started 20 years ago PleinAir magazine with Eric Roads has a wonderful issue.. I think in December?.. that lists hundreds of competitions around the country.. I did two competitions locally out of Reno Nevada many years ago, but at my age 75 I do mostly commissions and gallery work .. good luck, jeff and congratulations and good luck to you Elle.
I have listened to a few interviews and the podcast is stellar, but this episode is what prompted me to be a subscriber. I hope you are moved to do the same.
I think Japanese would like Leah’s painting because they also like beautiful fabrics especially in kimonos. 👘
Leeah's stuff is sooooo wonderfully detailed but alive....not flattened...not industrial...the fabric sways and dances in the light!
Jeff amazing interview as always, hopefully one of these artists are on your radar to interview, Ivan Loginov, Dada Novikova, Olga Guzhbina
It's interesting that you mention the book “So Good They Can't Ignore You” because the book advocates not choosing an artistic path. He states that if you choose a path like software engineering and become good at it, you will not only feel satisfied by practicing a craft similar to a painter, but you will also reap financial rewards, freedom, choice, etc.
Great interview.
I don't know how she doesn't get lost and cross-eyed while painting these. She's amazing!
Thank you for this, for me, introduction to a fascinating artist. Once, again a great conversation! Greetings from the uk.
What a great interview. Thanks. I'm catching up on some of your past podcasts and so glad I picked this one out.
Everytime I find myself unmotivated or uninspired or feeling like I don’t know where my art is going, I come back to this interview and I get a bunch of new ideas to develop, I learn something new each time I watch this, I remember why I decided to dedicate my life to art. Amazing, love this
I think whenever you have doubts about the beauty in humanity, you should come to this podcast and listen to people like them.
18:28 - This is not just her imagination. Anyone that has access to horses can get these views via routine care of the animals. You have to lift and check under each hoof to scrape out dirt before or after riding. There are also farriers that are trimming and shoeing horses on a daily basis as a profession. She also studied to be a veterinarian, which would require her to manipulate, inspect, and have at least some understanding of horse’s legs/hooves. So yes, she was likely looking at, touching, and physically manipulating the horse legs and hooves to study them. If she frequented slaughterhouses, she probably also had access to horse carcasses for study as well. So to say she was improvising and making this up… I feel is disrespectful to her commitment and knowledge.
2:16:54 A painter who may not find joy in painting itself but is deeply invested in executing it with maximum skill. It’s an amusing perspective, especially in art, where passion for creating is widely considered the artist's most essential attribute. This raises the question of how recent this cultural view is: would an apprentice in a Renaissance painter’s workshop, for example, find this notion of 'passion' strange or unnecessary? Such an apprentice would likely focus on mastering the craft and technical skill of painting, viewing it as a disciplined learning process rather than an expression of personal fervor. Four factors that drive success in any skill: Desire (passion) - genuine enthusiasm for the craft. Effort (grit) - the resilience to persevere. Intent (focus) - fully engaging with the task at hand. Ingenuity - the creativity to approach challenges with originality.
1:40:22 This aligns closely with Schmid’s approach. By capturing the most obvious visual elements first-the dominant shapes, the darkest darks, lightest lights, clear value relationships, and areas of highest chroma-you establish a foundation for making more informed decisions about subtler relationships. This prevents the need to constantly chase down minor adjustments or “back-stragglers” as they emerge, allowing for a more cohesive and controlled progression in the work.
1:12:10 That’s interesting about your Christian-themed work and managing two websites to avoid "putting off" certain collectors. I’ve been considering Buddhist-themed paintings myself but have held back for years-partly because I feel my figurative skills aren’t quite there, but also due to concerns about how my followers might respond. A lot of my collectors are in the US, and I suspect many are Christian; I worry that seeing me explore Buddhist themes could be off-putting for some of them. I sometimes wish I could go back to when I first started painting, creating freely without worrying about audience reactions. It’s that challenge of being pigeonholed into a particular style or subject, I suppose.
1:09:22 Exactly. Working directly from life, in front of the motif, is far more engaging for me. I liken it to the difference between hearing a musician live and listening to a recording-there's simply no comparison. A photograph captures only a narrow, often visually distorted impression, leaving much of the experience absent. While a skilled artist can compensate for these limitations and even transcend the merely photographic, painting from life doesn't necessarily result in a "better" painting. After all, many collectors aren't particularly concerned with the method by which a piece is created.
41:44 Despite our collective gripes with Instagram, discovering and viewing work (albeit in limited digital form) from artists like Denys and Jeffrey is one of the main reasons I keep returning.
Interesting to hear cousins talk about their art work.
Amazing conversation! One of the more interesting amd insightful ones so far
Love, love, love your work Mark!
I am obsessed with art magazines! I love them and have 2 subscriptions. I would have more if i could afford it. Access to art through social media brings so much opportunity for us to see more but it doesn't beat a magazine in hand for me. Of course nothing compares to experiencing the pieces in real life. Great podcast!
What a great conversation. Passion vs Talent vs Grit.. loved hearing the different viewpoints on this. I left a software job I was good at, but not passionate about, to pursue painting. I saw the passion in my co-workers and I felt like I lacked the motivation to push myself and get great at software. With painting, I find it much easier to push myself, to have grit and to put in the hard work and keep learning. You've talked about your lack of passion multiple times in your podcast, Jeff. I'm so curious, when you first started painting, what motivated you to keep doing it and to put in the hard work? What motivates you right now to pursue these huge painting projects? Isn't the desire to create a part of passion? If you didn't have at least an inkling of that, why do you create then? Would you feel the same way if the scale of your projects were smaller? I can see why someone without passion would pursue a software job or finance job for the money but why would someone without passion pursue painting? I'm sorry but I find this very hard to comprehend. Every job has aspects of it that one is not going to like. Having a passion just makes those annoying parts worthwhile to endure IMO. Sorry, I don't mean to attack you with all these questions but I'm just so curious. Btw, love the podcast and appreciate all the interviews.
Thanks for your questions. It’s funny you should ask. I’ve been thinking a lot about that. I googled the definition of passion to make sure it’s not an issue of my misunderstanding. Its not. Passion is defined as an “intense desire or enthusiasm for something”. You actually hit it on the head in your question when you asked “why do you create then?” I have an unbelievably intense desire to “create”. Painting is just one medium of creation. I don’t always find it particularly fun but my soul burns to create so I must do it. It’s kind of like having the burning desire to travel but not liking flying. I will fly because I have to satisfy my desire to see the world. I need to address this on the podcast sometime. Thanks again for the question.
A very enjoyable and interesting podcast. I would like to suggest Andrew Tischler as a guest of yours. He lives in New Zealand.
I’ve already interviewed him.
@@theundrapedartist Oh I will have to try and find it. Just recently found your channel. Loving it.
What an interesting conversation! And artist!... So beautiful to see her evolution.... Many thanks to the both of you!
Excellent interview. Wendy Artin would be a great guest!
completely fascinating conversations two weeks in a row. We appreciate sick buy sexy voice Jeff!
Very interesting interview. Outstanding viewpoints and thoughts from a great artist and educator!
John Coleman would be a fantasic guest.I've listened to him on Tischler's podcast.Very inspiring story and incredibly articulate.
What an insightful piece of advice at the end! Rings true for me; I came to the decision at the end of undergrad art school that although I had talent, I didn’t have drive. Chose to work in other fields, but they were always “jobs” . After staying home to raise kids, I’m now 53 and finally committing to my art practice with a renewed sense of urgency. Wish I had this drive when I was 21! Love your podcasts, Jeff. Learning so much from every single one.
Fantastic! One of my favourite interviews! I liked Michael Klein's work before but listening to the person, I like it more!
Rembrandt was getting tired? He was old, sure, but the late self portraits are among the greatest things ever done. Yeah I will give you some heat for that comment! He was being more efficient and inventing modern art. What exactly is it that you have done? I mean I know you’re a big somebody and I’m just some blissfully obscure painter living in the arsehole of the earth but late Rembrandt is when he stopped worrying about the market wanted and just fucking painted! His early work is great, of course, but the late work is why he is, and will always be, one of the most important of us talking monkeys to ever pick up a brush. Shaking my head.
❤Amazing interview. Very inspiring. Thank you.😊
There was a syndicated cartoon called BC, by the cartoonist Johnny Hart, which features a group of cavemen and anthropomorphic animals from various geologic eras. That description of prehistoric kids drawing on the walls of caves made me think of his cartoons. Some of them were pretty funny. Wonderful interview by the way.

Love to hear the process of making art.
Love Michael, he was one of the first good artists I discovered. Also i would love to see a video compilation of all the artists advice. That would be interesting
Hey Jeff, brilliant episode! Can i ask, how did you manage to contact Jamie? i would like to get in contact with him to ask him a bit more about his studies at the Florence academy. Thanks in advance. Jilmen T
Aesthetics of our space and what we bring in and what we surround ourselves with and where these things came from and how they were made. So important.
Fantastic episode!! Thank you!
Dude is amazing! Still life is just great. Thank you Jeff!

Pete's work is stunning. He's fearless.
I taught for years at a university and would show the APV videos to my classes. They were excellent & very inspirational. I think I even wrote Michael to make sure I had permission.
